Making heroes of the storm open source

Hello guys, if no-one is working on the project to improve it with new heroes and everything seems to be frozen in maintenance mode, why don’t you make the breakthrough by making the game open source to the community, so anybody can contribute in the development of the game?

So it can end up like warcraft 3?

Same reason. Greed, laziness and envy.

This has been asked for years. I think this boat has sailed.

A greedy company like Blizzard will never open source a game or an game engine, even though its 15 years old.

They are there for the stakeholders, not for the players or the community.

Warcraft III is not open source…

The problem is that the StarCraft II engine uses some proprietary licenced software which cannot be made open source. Examples of these could be anything from sound processing libraries to codex used for sound and video. These components would need to be stripped to make the code open source which would either take a lot of development work to have them removed or result in open source code that is functionally useless (Civilization Call to Power is an example of this) until these components get replaced. In both cases there could be massive regressions as a result.

There is also the huge issue of managing such a project. Who would be the leader? Chances are it would still cost development money.

That’s a great idea, but unfortunately it cannot be done. The only way to do it is to basically create a different community backed open source game with Hots mechanics, but with different maps and heroes to avoid copyright problems.
