Let's talk about Nova

This season Nova became my most played hero (from 2-nd most played), and I currently need 1 game to get her to level 39. But after playing her this much, I finally understood why people don’t pick her in competitive. While she’s not a “useless” hero, and can certainly work in some compositions, on some maps, she is extremely situational, and here is why:

First let’s cover her strengths:

  • She’s ranged, the only ranged stealth hero.
  • She got good burst damage.
  • She has stealth

Then let’s go trough her weaknesses:

  • She’s in top 5 heroes with lowest health pools.
  • She has no self-sustain, or defensive tools (apart from 1 underperforming talent).
  • She has no damage once she dishes out her burst.
  • She has no reliable escape (Ghost Protocol is not a reliable escape tool)
  • She has no mobility.
  • She’s extremely reliant on her positioning. Yet she has no tools that allow her to position herself better.
  • Her main damage source (outside heroics) is a skillshot, which can miss, or be blocked by anything.
  • She has absolutely no waveclear until level 16 (and she has waveclear then only if she picks Explosive Rounds), or she needs to use her heroic to clear waves.

Then let’s check things that nullify the value of her strengths:

  • Her being ranged is nullified by heroes with dive. Combine that with her low HP, lack of escape and lack of mobility, and she suddenly becomes a liability.
  • Her burst damage isn’t all that high. It can kill some squishies, but any healing/shielding/protection, that allows them to survive Nova’s burst saves them, as Nova has no damage to finish off enemies, once she uses up her combo. And attempting to stay there and finish them with basic attacks, or while waiting for her cooldowns is dangerous, due to her low HP, no mobility and no escape.
  • Her stealth isn’t really that big of an advantage. It helps you do rotations a bit easier, and gank, but stealth itself the way it is now isn’t really useful. Any skillshot/AoE can reveal you, and then you are in a situation where you need to run for your life.

Then let’s analyse why she is bad:

  • So, she is skillshot dependent. Her skillshot needs a clear path to the enemy, or it can be blocked by anything. Which means Nova needs to put herself in a position where she can hit that enemy. However, due to her lack of mobility, by the time she puts herself in such position, the enemy can (most of the times will) change their position, so Nova would be in a bad position again. And sometimes in order to get into a “good” position, you need to overextend, which is quite dangerous due to lack the lack of escape in case reinforcements come, or you simply can’t finish the enemy by yourself.
  • Her lack of waveclear makes her only playable when your team has at least 2 heroes, who can clear lanes. Otherwise her team will be losing the map, even if they are winning TFs/objectives.
  • Her only purpose, with her current design, is to burst down squishies, who are out of position. Yet if enemies don’t overextend, and stay grouped, she can’t really do much. She can poke with Snipe from time to time, which by itself isn’t something significant, and other heroes (Hanzo, Ming, Chromie) can do a lot better than Nova.
  • If she fails to kill a target, it’s a lot likely for her to die instead. Ghost Protocol is useless as an escape tool, as any incidental AoE/skillshot can reveal you right after using it. And in situations where it could actually save you, it’s usually on cooldown.

Nova can work when:

  • The map allows spliting up, and fighting away from minion waves (WHJ, DS, ToD, ST), but she’s terrible on maps where enemy team stays together, or all the fighting is on the lanes (IS, TOSQ, BOE). She’s kind a neutral on the other maps.
  • Her team has plenty of waveclear to cover for her.
  • Enemy team doesn’t have dive/insane cc.
  • Enemy team consists of at least 3 squishy heroes.
  • Enemy team has no reveals like Murky’s Fish Eye, Tassadar’s Oracle, Lunara’s upgraded Wisp, Kharazim’s Air Ally, Cho’Gall’s eye, Rexxar’s torch. These make your rotations/ganks a lot harder.

Or:

  • Her team can isolate a single enemy from their team (has a good Garrosh/Stitches/Junkrat/Diablo/Alarak).
  • Her team is composed of heroes who can delete heroes instantly (Butcher/Valeera/Genji/Greymane/Varian/Alarak… sometimes Illidan)

And some more thoughts:

  • It’s hard for her to focus down a specific enemy in a TF, as their teammates can be between you and your target, preventing you from using your main damage source. While Explosive Rounds helps with that, hitting a summon/minion/merc prevents snipe from getting the cooldown reduction (from the level 7 talent). Also, missing is always an option. And by missing, you also lose big part of your damage. I don’t know any player who never misses skillshots.
  • AAS makes her burst a bit better, but hinders her damage outside of combo even more.
  • OitC build was needlessly nerfed. It used to be a viable alternative for dealing reliable damage when you can’t reliably hit with Snipe (and hitting with Snipe isn’t so easy due to it being blocked by everything), but the nerfs to it made it insufficient to do its job.
  • Her decoy’s AI is bad… terrible even.

And some suggestions, that can make her viable in case a complete kit overhaul isn’t an option:

  • Give Snipe a talent that allows it to pierce, and put it in earlier tires. So her main damage source is a bit more reliable, and so she can have some waveclear earlier on.
  • Increase Ghost Protocol’s unrevealable duration, and reduce its cooldown. So she has a bit more reliable escape, that isn’t on cooldown when most needed.
  • Increase Nova’s basic attack damage, and maybe remove Snipe Master. Make it a talent again. So she has some damage outside her initial burst.

At least give her the same Unrevealable treatment (Sam/Valee) to GP. And a slight hp buff.

Agreed. There are times where it just simply stands still despite enemies in her range to attack.

Would like to see this, if them devs allow it. Or better yet, put Explosive Rounds in an earlier tier.

Bring back Railgun and put it on the same tier as Explosive Round, specifically at level 13 or earlier.

The highest ranked player in storm league mains nova.

Having bad wavelcear on Nova is intended. Buffing her wave-clear would definitely make her stronger but it would fail the niche-design. What we want is a lot of heroes that are unique and that means not all heroes can be strong in every scenario. The game is designed around a draft where players have to think which hero would fit in the team. Nova isn’t a hero that you can always pick and have a good chance of doing well and the same goes for many other heroes.
The more diverse the heroes are, the more difficult it is to balance them all correctly and the easiest way to balance all the heroes would be by making them all the same.

Do you want to redesign the hero or just buff her stats until she gets to a 50% winrate?^^

Personally I have 58% overall win rate with Nova. Although THIS season I have 12 wins : 14 losses so far.

What I really want for Nova is a complete re-design, where she has stealth mode and assault mode.

But if that’s too far fetched, then a small rework, that targets at least some of her weaknesses, will be in order.

Before the stealth rework, I could kill a lot more heroes before they can reach me, than I can kill now. Hell, even the oversized minion, Lucio, is killing Nova 1 v 1. He has enough sustain to live trough her initial burst, and after that he simply heals himself for more than Nova can dish out. And due to him being able to move 24/7, hitting him with a Snipe is quite tricky.
Her strengths simply do not compensate for all her weaknesses.
I mean… her only purpose is to kill enemies, she isn’t good at anything else, she doesn’t have that in her kit. Since that’s the case, she needs to be the best at her job, but she simply isn’t.

As for a buff to her numbers… I suppose they could revert the nerfs to OitC, Lethal Decoy, Crippling Shot, and to her HP. But I’ll see these only as temporary solutions.

I think the easiest solution would be to allow her to swap places with her decoy on a cd.

That alone would fix much of her survivability troubles.

The problem is Nova can be a really aggravating hero to play against if you’re some mage; there is really nothing you can do as a Jaina or KT or Valla to not get vaporized.

I agree with that. I even put it as a suggestion in 1 of my rework concepts for her, but in a slightly different way: Level 20 talent, that allows her to teleport a short distance, and leave a decoy at her old place.

Actually, I’m not sure if there are still heroes who can do nothing against Nova.
Jaina, only needs to place a water elemental down, and it alone will kill Nova. She can avoid Nova’s damage trough ice block. Her level 13 shield talent can also help her with surviving, and killing Nova.
Valla, can use her stun to interrupt Nova (if she went for TT), and can juke/escape with her Vault.
KT takes away 90% of Nova’s HP with just Q + W. He just needs to hit his E (which can pass trough the decoy, if he empowers it). And with the level 1 shield talent, Nova can’t really kill him that fast.

Valla has as much HP as Nova - 1300 on level 0. Nova’s Q (stacked) + W + basic attack deals 561,5 + 4% damage. So you need to devote a lot of resources to kill her, you don’t just go there, and get a free kill instantly. There is plenty of counterplay xP

There are lots of factors that are to be considered, but in isolated conditions, I can’t really think of a hero, who stands 0% chance against Nova.

OitC wasn’t needlessly nerfed, it was nerfed becuase it did comparable damage at the time to her Snipe build and was a hell of alot easier and more consistent, AND didn’t limit her pve potential.

It took quit a few buffs to snipe to bring it in line (and I still feel it’s not enough given its the centerpiece of her kit).

That said, I’m down and have been down for a redesign for a long, long time.

I don’t know… that talent has an overall 43,5% win rate for the last 15 weeks. It used to have closer to 50% win rate before the stealth nerf. You don’t simply nerf a 50% wr talent down to 43,5% and call it “needed”.
Before the stealth nerf, Snipe Master and OitC were providing different things. While OitC was indeed more reliable, Snipe Master was more rewarding.
With Snipe master, your Snipe could deal 542,5 + 4% dmg. With 40% Lethal Decoy, and rewind on level 20, Nova could deal 1519 + 4% dmg from Snipe alone, including the snipes from her Decoys.
While with OitC, you were dealing your damage more slowly… it was no risk, low reward, compared to the high risk, high reward Snipe Master.

you can’t say snipe alone and then include anything else. there might have been a nerf i dont recall didn’t know about since i took a few months off, but im thinking back to her rework on when they introduced snipemaster

One idea I had for her decoy was make it controlable to some degree, like telling it to “Attack this” or “Move here” as cast commands, so if your cursor is over an enemy hero. The decoy moves in to attack them.

Also give a talent that allows the decoy to use weaker versions of snipe and pinning shot.

Pretty much this. They really missed a golden opportunity with the stealth reworks. It would have been the perfect time to retool Nova to behave much as she does in StarCraft 2’s co-op mode: Have her trait let her switch between an assault and stealth mode on a cool down. Stealth mode would give her Snipe, Pinning Shot, and her standard stealth decoy. Assault mode would give her the cone shotgun blast, blink with a very minor shield, and her sword-wielding higher damage decoy (which would have also invalidated their need to constantly adjust current Decoy’s damage because apparently it was too strong. She can either have her stealth misdirection decoy or her non-stealthed damage decoy).

I included it as:
Nova’s Snipe x 2 + Decoy’s Snipe x 2… it’s still snipe damage, kind a. But if Nova went for Crippling shot instead, she could still deal (105 + 1356,25) + 4% dmg with Crippling shot + 2 x Snipes. And that was an instant burst damage. Enough to kill heroes like Valla, Chromie, Tracer, etc in an instant.

Anyways… before they made Snipe Master baseline, OitC used to give her 80% bonus damage.
After the stealth nerf, they also nerfed it to deal 70% bonus damage, but didn’t mention it in the patch notes (iirc).
And later they further nerfed it to 60% bonus damage.

its not though, unless i missed something else, decoys do not benefit in anyway from SM or snipe talents anymore. i might just be nitpicking which my bad if so, but in my head im thinking if i could do 1500 damage every 2 seconds with snipes i’d be golden

Yes. Before the stealth nerf, decoy used to benefit from Snipe Master, and after stealth nerf, decoy was no longer benefiting from it.

But do have in mind that she has 1 min cooldown on Rewind. She could only dish out that much burst every 1 min. Otherwise her snipe was dealing 542,5 + 4% dmg every 3/6 sec :stuck_out_tongue:
Now it deals 356,5 + 4% every 2 sec.

EDIT: Okay, it took some time and effort, but I made a table of Nova’s damage “before and after”:
Here’s the list of old Nova and new Nova’s combo damage for all of her builds:
Old Nova with OitC + Double Tap + Crippling Shot + Rewind:
W + b/a + Q + b/a + W + b/a + (E) b/a + (Rewind) W + b/a + Q + b/a + (E) b/a = 2796,25 + 4% dmg over 6 sec.
Old Nova with AAS + Double Tap + Crippling Shot + Rewind:
W + b/a + Q + W + (Rewind) Q + W = 1470,625 + 4% dmg in ~1 sec.
Old Nova with SM + Double Tap + Crippling Shot + Rewind:
W + b/a + Q + W + (Rewind) Q + W + b/a = 1986,25 + 4% dmg in 1 sec
Old Nova with OitC + Double Tap + Lethal Decoy + Rewind:
2674 + 4% dmg over 6 sec (could be higher, depending on the decoy’s mood. The AI used to be bad in a different way back then, the decoy could just run away instead of stay and attack, or it could attack a minion for example).
Old Nova with AAS + Double Tap + Lethal Decoy + Rewind:
2034,75 + 4% dmg over ~1 sec
Old Nova with SM + Double Tap + Lethal Decoy + Rewind:
2212 + 4% dmg over 1 sec
Old Nova with SM + Explosive Rounds + Perfect Shot:
752,5 + 4% instant dmg + 285,8 + 4% dps

New Nova OitC + Double Tap + Crippling Shot + Rewind:
2711,2 + 4% dmg over 6 sec. This is including decoy’s built-in damage. Otherwise it’s 2606,8 + 4%, which is 189,45 less, compared to before. But do have in mind, that higher % of that damage is from Snipe, so it’s a lot more punishing if you miss. Or it may be even lower, if you didn’t have full stacks on SM.
New Nova AAS + Double Tap + Crippling Shot + Rewind:
1510,6 + 4% dmg over ~1 sec, which is a bit higher than before, due to the built-in SM, but it can as well be lower, if you aren’t at full stacks.
New Nova OitC + Double Tap + Lethal Decoy + Rewind:
2786,6 + 4% dmg over 6 sec, which is 112 dmg higher than before due to you being able to summon 4 decoys instead of just 2.
New Nova AAS + Double Tap + Lethal Decoy + Rewind:
2073,125 + 4% over ~1 sec, which is currently her highest burst damage possible. It’s higher than Old Nova’s AAS burst, but lower than her SM burst.
New Nova Perfect Shot + Psionic Efficiency + Explosive Rounds:
561,5 + 4% instant burst damage + 283,25 + 4% dps, which is lower burst dmg, with a bit lower sustained dmg.

That’s the main issue for me.

I got Nova to level 70 but I haven’t played her in months because these nerfs killed it for me.

Decoy build was also really fun in the early days of stealth rework but they had to also nerf it several times. Lethal decoy just deals 30% of your damage, that’s just pathetic.

Snipe build was always good until the stealth rework when they made snipe master baseline, they nerfed the baseline snipe damage several times because of it. Now they made it pretty obvious that they’re trying to shove snipe build down nova players’ throat by nerfing her other viable (and more fun) builds and leaving them stuck with a build that’s dependant on a clunky ‘no-miss’ mechanic and laughably low AoE (which is ironic since the point of “sniping” is that it’s supposed to be good single target damage, yet they threw too much focus on to explosive rounds).

She’s in a weird spot right now. I find she is more of a “supporting” assassin. I.e someone else dives, she flanks and does the killing blow. Basically, nova is good for cleaning up wounded opponents. She rarely can carry a game as main damage dealer.

I find she works very well with the likes of Varian, graymane, tyrael, artanis.

My suggestion is to completely redesign her into a proper sniper/ghost unit. I e: manipulate the field, do some high precision skill shot damage, give some more CC when outside of stealth. Perhaps gaining a different set of abilities while in stealth could work

But sadly, i don’t think she will get anything. She is a relic from an old era. Her design is simply outdated.

Negative, after her rework snipe was utter garbage. It took a few months for them to buff it properly. There was roughly a month from the last SM buff until it was made baseline that everything was ok (well as ok as nova could get). After it was made baseline she went to hell again becuase she did slightly more damage with a snipe at 4 stacks than before but like half damage with 0 stacks.

I say OitC deserved the nerfs becuase it’s a crutch that bypasses the centerpiece of her kit. Get rid of it, and buff her accordingly, or give her the rework that she really needs.

That or they could give that functionality to Perfect Shot, both I would love to happen.

Was searching old talents when I came across this:

New Talent (Level 16): Remote Access

  • Nova can now control her Holo Decoy and increases the Decoy’s vision range from 6 to 12.
