yeah it does, I used to like solo queing in this game, now i know if you do it, you will get trolls and losses so its sad.
QM solo queue is the fastest way to get a match. Most people don’t want to wait 10+ minutes for a draft or storm league game. So for the rest of us in QM solo it’s a toss of the coin what the comps will be and it’s pretty obvious from there whether you are getting a win or a loss.
I’ve switched to Overwatch until Blizzard decides to hire competent developers for HotS instead of paying a biology intern to do their algorithms… In Overwatch I can at least change my hero to balance the team instead of being locked into a match with 4 tanks, 1 dps, 1 support vs. a balanced team comp and proceed to bash my face on my keyboard for the next 20 minutes as I would in HotS.
Matchmaking is clearly broken in HotS and until they decide to seriously fix it – don’t waste your time with this game.
its comp related and player skill related. Ever notice when you queue up with illidan and win a lot, you are all of sudden the only melee for the next how many games?
Or if you win a lot with a certain hero, you are direct counters over and over.
Due to lack of players this is the only way tbh
If you have mmr higher for your rank, then you will play all plat/diamonds games against fullstacks, Nurocs/HotsFan challenge smurfs and smurf accounts ml/gmls 70-100lvl with wr 80-90%. Its very interesting balance for game mode with many diamond players “played 3 years ago and 10-15 games in season for 5 years”. Where is that all players???) Ranked system is scripted trash with hidden real mmr, ai-players, ml smurfs, inactive boosted players, and highmmr 20k games players from elo hell.
“Watch streamers challenge and dont cry”… Yep, watch ex pro players challenges, when you Falstad from this screen and have gold1 on main acc:

And Blizzard, how do you like idea, of blocked all that 50lvl 90%wr accounts for ranked ruining? Anyone like play 3/4 games vs masters in lowmidleagues?
I’m talking about Ranked as well. I just had a win streak and was at 60% now I’ve lost 5 6 7 8 in a row (And yes my team’s have been full of s) and back to
~55% 52% (Yay can I now win again?). As I said, I don’t think the game has a forced 50% win rate but it has been stated that a 45-55% win ratio is where everyone (and heroes) should be around.
I don’t think they force bad comps but more enforce matchmaking rules. Maybe the MMR won’t be in your favor but they can’t obviously pick AFK/Feeders. Also in QM if they purposely match you against unfvaourable comps it would increase time. I doubt they would do that but it’s entirely possible.
Edit: Once again I am starting to have doubts with my own argument. I am assuming it must still be matchmaking but gosh it feels like it’s stacked against me. Just had a ranked match where it was 3 bronzes and 2 golds vs 1 plat 2 golds 1 silver and a bronze and lost the full 200… 8 in a row now.
Calling HotS forums zealots would be way too soft.
The simple answer is, Yes. The game does force you to 50%.
Once you start climbing MMR, the game will have trouble finding you a “fair” match, so what it will do is instead match you according to the average MMR of your team.
For example, four bronze players have an average of 1800 mmr, but you have 3300 (master). The game can match you, in QM and unranked, against an entire team of diamond players, because all of them have mmr of 2400, which is the same range as your team. I had this happen to me back in 2016, and it is simultaneously the most memorable and awful match I have ever been forced to play.
Basically, the better you do, the more likely you are to get lead weights for teammates. By contrast, lead weights are more likely to be attached to rising players… In this regard, you will inevitably be forced to 50% IF you que solo.
No. Its not. That’s just how win/loss percentage should be. The more you win the better your enemies will be. The more you lose, the worse your enemies will be. On average!
I do wish Blizzard was a little more transparent on your MMR. Its not hard to show it right above your rank and have the game tell you when you lower and raise your MMR after matches like when you lose rank points. I also would love for it to show more in depth statistics in your player profile, like displaying hero MMR so you can see how well you do with a certain hero. I don’t like that people go by win rate because its a team game and if one person just decides not to try, it affects your win rate regardless of how well you performed.
50% winrate is not forced, but in time u will land automatically at a point where u stuck at 50%.
This is your skillcap. Besides you aren’t Grandmaster #1 there are enough options to improve your game play.
- You can improve hitting skillshots,
Position yourself better in tf, - Learn to rotate efficiently from lane to lane,
- Learn macroplay and strategy on every map (for example I still see a lot players on Plat, who don’t know that you can bait the punisher on infernal shrines, behind your wall and defend it easy, but they fight in front of the gate and die
).
- Learn camp timings etc.
Just to name some points.
But as long as u don’t invest time in improving, you want get better, just by playing. And without getting better you won’t be able to climb in ladder.
Which is totally normal despites you are at your skillcap.
Your impact is only 10% on the game (5 player in your team + 5 on enemies team).
The matchmaker doesn’t know if someone is willing to troll, to throw, drunk or anything else.
You probably should have taken a break. I’m not saying it’s all your fault, but you might be on a tilt. Yes it’s true you are the only consistent factor in your games, so we should always look at ourselves first. I do also think it’s just as false to assert that a losing streak is only determined by your own plays. This is a team based game after all.
It sounds like you’re dealing with rainbow matches which is a trash-shoot.
Did you know 50/50 isn’t real if you are in a five stack of people you know.
I think matchmaking is based on your overall stats. I have characters I’m garbage on with bad winrates, then I have characters who have decent winrates. Yet my main winrate is at 50%. So I will pick my garbage character to get the 500 gold, and matchmaking system is just going to ASSUME that I will play better than I actually will.
Edit: To the people who are telling me to get better. I don’t think there’s a reason for me to get better, the matchmaking system is just going to give me good teammates to carry me if i lose too many games. That’s my point, there’s no reason to really try it doesn’t make a difference. You might be able to win 1 game because you played good, but then the matchmaking gives you feeders the next game to take that win away.
In theory, the “50% winrate” algorithm tries to place you where are supposed to be in terms of skill on the rank ladder.
Therefore you can play against people your own skill level. God-tier players should be facing other God-tier players, etc.
When you are facing someone equally as skilled as you, it makes sense that you would win only 50% of your matches. Otherwise, if you win more than 50%, then it’s quite clear you are not equally skilled.
In execution, since the player pool is so small and Blizzard has done a poor job in general, what you end up getting is what you have described. The game is trying to encourage fair matches, but instead of putting equally skilled players on both teams, it only makes sure the average MMR of the teams is the same. This can lead to wonky combinations of players of varying skill levels being put together.
This is over a couple of days… 10 now… 1 games of 50% win ratio.
I started out “against” this theory but Blizzard Gods have decided to prove me wrong
I agree with OP, I perform above average in many matches (not all). I even group up with friends who say I just outright dominate at certain times. But then those same friends notice the most stupid and bizzare mistakes my teammates make. I was literally in this one match where a player who chose Varian had no synergy across his talents, picked the taunt ult and got soloed by a nova as he seem confused on what to do.
My teammates kept calling him out and asking him to stop trying to solo the enemy team but he refused to listen, at the end of the game which we lost he said “at least i dont have to play varian anymore and i can play my mains” like bruh with that kind of skill level i dont think its the character at fault here.
There are so many players I get who don’t know what they are doing and it makes the games a lot less fun and it destroys any good experiences i may have with the game.
Edit: Also that Nova that soloed varian just stood there for like 99% of the time in mid lane with varian and didnt even use an ult. The nova was pretty bad too now that i think about it.
I just had my first win in 11 matches and got 265 points and was only 1 game off 50% so I have turned the tide and done something right.
I’ve noticed it to, my guess that because you are higher skill and to “average” out the team they will put you with a lower skilled. But IMO that doesn’t always translate and I think solid teams without a carry are better then a rainbow team with a carry.
In LOL it would probably favor you but in HOTS where it is team based it wouldn’t. This is just my take on the situation but I know the feels
Very fun game we have here to stack one team and I am the only one on my team who has a kill. Thanks for punishing me for winning games.
Edit: I will argue that this system doesn’t encourage people to learn how to play the game. Because they are winning even if they aren’t even doing much thanks to this 50% winrate ratio. Someone can just sit in bottom all game and not help in any teamfights yet still maintain a 50% winrate.
I have always said that this game discourages people to learn / improve in their matches. Its self evident in the fact that all ranks up to masters still make the same common bronze mistakes. If the game promoted personal skill and required actual growth in order to climb the ranks / MMR pool than this wouldn’t happen.
Our Sonya at 243 experience 8 minutes into the match. Sonya is also around 50% winrate and gets queued with us. Sonya spent 80% of the match standing in a bush and walking around the map.

Because so few people play in a five stack, almost every single player can go to 60% and above win rate by playing as 5, in any MMR or rank.
Most times I do so we win like 90-100% of matches.

Just one of the reasons why playing in a 5 stack increases your winrate a lot: You can’t get people like that on your team ever! Only the enemy can.
