A few days ago i got a pretty skin for auriel in one of those boxes. Just because of that skin i gave Auriel a try and bought her. After playing several Mobas for years i was able to tell she’s a charakter that heavily relys on the correct positioning due to no escape ability. Dont stay to close to your enemy, but dont stay to far, so you can hit your Q for 2 second blind. Also her Stun is pretty amazing. A well placed stun can punish an enemy, secure a mate or denie any assassination attempt. Her heal also is over the top if you pair with Heroes like Zul’Jin, its absolutely astonishing in Teamfights when you can pump out a massive heal every 3-4 seconds. And adding to that, even if a mate dies, you can easily ressurect him and win any teamfight.
Its my 6th Game and i still stay at 100% Winrate which is pretty nice. What i really like about her is the fact, that she is absolutely able to farm Creeps. Other supporters heavily lack the ability to kill waves but for her its like 2 Q and the job is done. Lets summarize:
+Great Heal when paired with Great Teammate
+Ultimate with heavy impact in Teamfights
+Great Saving ability / Stun ability
+2 Second Blind every 5 Seconds
+Shes able to hold a Lane and kill waves fast with her Q
I would call her a really strong pick. Opinions?
There are better choices, but she is viable.
Its difficult for me to say anything else quite frankly, besides “ok”.

In my eyes, Auriel is either a feast or famine support type.

I just pick her for QM Angelic Flight yolo plays. Im not a big healer player.
If you good with her and you have a good charging hero she can be viable.

She can be pretty cool with cho’gall.
fast charged energy, if you pick aegis cho has 2 stasis, if you pick res then you res 2 heroes for 1 - ??? profit!

One of my favorite supports but sadly she is one of if not the worst support in the game currently. Can’t heal out of combat and even in-combat she is nothing special. Malf can pump around same heals without requiring clustering for heals with more reliable CC and mass cleanse.
She used to be decent pair with Cho’Gall but with Ana and Alex around she lost that role(and CG getting nerfed to oblivion). She used to have unique role as hypercarry enabler but that also was taken from her.
Nowadays there really isn’t reason to pick her anymore, other healers are safer more reliable than her while still providing just as good support if not better. It’s a huge shame really since she was created as higher skill-cap support but she gets no comparable reward for it. Hopefully someday she’ll get back bursting light again and bring back the glory days of the angel.

I do think what she really suffers from is that she has neither hard AoE-CC nor CC-counters available, plus effectively one usable ult.
If two of those points would change she would be played more often.

As you said She’s really only as good as the person playing her and her teammates have to group to maker her effective. The good news is the grouping is less obvious than Alexstrasa.
FWIW I’m a terrible auriel I cant hit a lash for the life of me and that really moves her from good healer to meh healer.
I would say Auriel is good only with a few champions, Gul’dan, Zul’Jin, Kael coming to my mind.

Sometimes I avoid her because I don’t want to risk to get into arguments with people who can’t feed her energy, position themselves badly, die and ask why they weren’t healed.
Sometimes you do get a great comp with people who know what they’re doing and how Auriel works, and then it looks great.
But yeah, feast or famine, with more chances for famine, imo.
I feel like she’s a good high skill ceiling support. Honestly, I feel like Resurrect is kind of weak(except for Cho’gall)? If they could replace it, or change it so you can Resurrect them at a place of your choosing… then she could be great.
She depends far to much on her team comp to heal well.
She is ranked hero not QM

Auriel is a Carry-carrying hero. She relies on her damage dealer for her healing, and they rely on her.
If you have a good damage dealer on your team, such as KT, Zul’jin, Valla, etc. she is really strong.
If your damage dealer is bad and/or dies too fast, she’s almost useless.
Auriel in ARAM is super strong because of this. As long as you have at least one good damage dealer, she’ll be able to AoE burst heal your team extremely often. At the same time, she’s not too reliable in QM because you can’t be sure you’ll get a good battery.
On another note, Cho’Gall + Auriel is still absolutely busted. If you ever want a free 75%+ winrate, that’s how you get it.

Actually she’s super strong in ARAM, cuz she uses no mana, and in brawls, there is one constant TF, so she keeps on getting lots of energy. So she can keep her team healthy 
GM Support main here…well was, I would almost never pick Auriel.
That’s my advice, she heavily needs a rework. There are just too many better choices out there, that and she doesn’t’ even really fill her own niche anymore.

What is is that makes Whitemane good but Auriel bad? Is it just the application of heals? Whitemane has no cleanse and can’t really heal out of combat either. I find Auriel’s damage much higher and her CC far, far stronger.
I mostly say this since Auriel is my favourite healer ever since the Brightwing rework (I dislike the healing on Phase Shift, since it warps her old global mobility coolness into just a burst heal 90% of the time). I have great results playing as Auriel, and she’s actually really fun.
You playing on some weird pre-release version Whitemane on special test server? WM has cleanse at level 7(and additional AoE cleanse at 20) albeit she is one of few heroes who can often manage without due to her insane healing output. She has pretty good out of combat heals with Q + Q + W while still netting her mana(W build is dominant because it provides actual extra heals and gives her unlimited mana). Her ult is heal + armor to entire team. She has way more reliable and less conditional hard CC at 13 compared to Auriel whip. With current state of game there simply isn’t a single situation where I’d wish to have Auriel as a healer for my team.

Whitemane heals based on damage yes BUT that’s only 1 part of her kit… she can heal without needing dmg output where as Aurial can not. If talented and played correctly Whitemane can have infinite mana.
Whitemane also can talent into unstoppable.
The “feast or famine” so many people are going on about is determined by one single factor: Does the enemy have a strong frontline? If yes, then you win. If no, then you lose.
2-3 melee heroes on the enemy team = sacred sweep resets + more auto attack targets for energized cord.
To my knowledge, no support in this game can keep up with auriel’s healing if she can consistently fill her bar to 100% inbetween the 4 second cooldown of ray of heaven.
