Game is patching, which is great. I like this game a lot. But trying to get anyone into it is impossible when, 5 games in a row, I pair my first time playing friend with lvl 3000 acount enemies. It’s not close and it just makes them never play again
Start against AI then.
yeah just use lower difficulty AI then increase it, let people have fun until they can handle getting crushed
Aram can also be a good way to ease new players in
Don’t play live matchmaking matches with newbie friends anymore in 2023.
There used to be a new player queue back when this game had more players, where they’d be matched with only other level 1-50 newbies on the Cursed Hollow map for a few dozen matches.
That no longer exists so they get thrown to the wolves and smurfs right away during their first match.
Direct them to ARAM or AI until they are at least level 100-300.
There still is a new player queue (speaking as someone who started leveling a new account this year), but it’s overridden by having a high-level account in your party.
OP, you need to make a new account to play with them, otherwise they won’t get new player protection.
You should be starting new players in vs A.I. not QM against people who know what they’re doing.
Vs A.I is a lot more friendly to, eh, everyone. It is a good place to get the feel of heroes. Having A.I teammates is also less chaotic than with other players as there is zero chance of being matched with someone who AFKs, throws the match, or getting stuck with one or more enemy A.I that is set to a higher difficulty.
vs AI teaches all the wrong habits and is the opposite of what everyone should expect playing against actual humans so the more time they waste with it the harder it will be to transition into QM later on
aram may be overwhelming at first because you aren’t limited to 15 or so heroes but is the best hook for the new players and as long as you don’t skip healer/tank roles no one will give you a particularly hard time for sucking, also by the time you collect enough gold you’ll have a good general idea of what you most want to spend it on
while the game was at the peak of popularity those that were buying new heroes with irl shekels would regularly queue vs AI to get the general feel for the character before trying it out against other people, but I also feel like waiting 20min for a match didn’t help either; what I wanted to say say is you should do the same when trying out something completely new and take your time to read through the talent tooltips at least so you don’t jump into the game like that one Whitemane that doesn’t understand how healing works
you should try pointing out to all the new guys is that all heroes are very similar in power and how the difference in the store price between the two usually means nothing, this isn’t hearthstone where something from four seasons ago goes out of fashion and becomes obsolete
All of what you said, and new players joining VS AI games are probably more likely to find players around their skill level and have more chance of making friends to group with, later in PVP games.
Thanks for the update.
Yeah, it’s pointless for a new player to queue with a level 1182 friend. That’s where things will go south matchmaking-wise.
Yes, queueing with someone with higher mmr will mess things up, but also there isn’t that many new players, so even if you solo queue as a new player you still get matched with and against higher level mmr players.
People should atleast have basis knowledge of the game before being allowed into QM.
Once played DW with a 4 stack that had a lvl 1 Jaina on thier team that had zero clue what he/she was doing and because of that we lost. Tried to explain that in /w to thier BW but was greeded with a hostile additude about I was once a newbie myself so I had no reason to blame her for anything.
Problem is this is 100% the reaction you gonna get from friends that defend thier newbie friends when they play bad instead of making sure he/she learns the game first vs AI.
But sadly this is not the case. When I was new to this game I learned the game first and did only play practise mode for quiet some times until I learned my hero. Then I ofc got more experince over time by playing the game.
But just jumping into the frey with 0 experince will 100% upset alot.
It allows more room for experimentation definitely as well as being a lot less punishing against those that just want to goof off and relax.
Yep this is true, but if they just want to sit back and relax and not venture into PvP then there is no harm done.
This also unfortunately happens in vs A.I to. I normally do not give advice unless someone asks a question in chat. If I ever get aggravated enough to point something out, it often just pours gas on the fire. I’ve been asked a few times to quit doing one thing or another but nine times out of ten they are polite about it.
That wasn’t my experience. Queue times were a little longer, but I never saw anyone outside of my level range until I started getting around level 100 or so. Smurfs of course are a factor to that (guilty as charged), but you aren’t thrown right in with the wolves.
Game’s not in as much dire straights as you think. There is an influx of new players, as there is with all free games. The problem comes from player retention rather than player earning.
Maybe its changed nowadays, but a couple years ago I made a new account in the US server and my first QM was already against people level 1k+. There was literally no one below level 100. The next 20 matches or so were like that.
It could be they play on EU. Which is the most likely region to get a steady supply of newbies.
US, ANZ, Singapore, China servers are as dead as they come on a weekday evening. A new player has slim chance of getting only other new players as enemies/teammates.
I suffer greatly from the ping on EU due to not living there while playing fast paced heroes, but it’s so evident it’s the largest region when games start much faster, and you don’t see the same 20 faces over and over in the name loadout every hour.
I don’t think rainbow SL games are a thing on EU either (and probably never have been). On smaller servers, the only way to get SL games going sometimes is with the system putting literal Masters and Bronze 3 rated people on the same team, and averages the ranks of both teams as good as it can (so the enemy can be full of platinums and golds in that example).
If you don’t mind to lose every game then yes. Otherwise the new player will need to learn a new hero pretty much every round.
But the new guy is with a friend, they shouldn’t have to hard of a time learning new heroes.
