I don’t know if it is the matchmaking or the lack of other noobs, but HOTS is a really frustrating experience for me and my girlfriend who just started.
In the first 10 quickmatch games we won and lost about 50/50, but since then we are pretty much just losing anymore (4 won vs 21 lost in the last games 25 games).
I mean I know we are bad right now, but why are we not matched with other bad players then?
Even if we would be the worst 2 players I can’t imagine that a winrate of 16% is justified, and in the very beginning (first 10 games) we felt like we were evenly matched.
Is there anything I can do? How many games do I have to lose so I am finally matched with other noobs? I like the game, but it is impossible to get better and have fun when you are just slaughtered every game.
This has been my experience when I first started also. The first few QMs I was doing perfectly fine, and then suddenly it felt like there was a huge drop of performance on my part, particularly in comparison to other players in the match.
This is attributed to the low population of hots playerbase. The game has no option but to throw you into a larger group of average players while it was too soon to do so.
My advice is to move into AI games. Especially with your partner (speaking with experience here), its still fun enough of an experience despite the fact youre fighting AI. And you’d be improving without the adverse losses and rude comments of other team mates.
Thanks for your answer, we played a lot against the AI already, but even on Elite it feels like we will never learn how to play against humans like that.
How come though that in the first few games they find good matches? Maybe we should just switch to League of Legends, if the size of the playerbase is in fact the problem.
We specifically chose HOTS because it seemed like the most casual friendly Moba, but maybe we were wrong there
It is indeed the most casual. And if it helps, my QM games improved after that first sudden drop. In that its actually quite fun to experience hots’ learning curve. At least in my opinion.
I’d say try the game a little bit longer and include more friends if you can. It really is more of a party game than its counterparts, as it can be described as more of a brawler than a moba.
Dabble a little bit with ARAM, QM, and Coop AI. All three have their own stuff to teach. Aram is especially useful when you want to try all the heroes faster. It isn’t long before you already have a handful of favorites you enjoy playing even in losing games.
And best of luck also!
Just skip the whole AI thing
It wont learn you anything except how to move
AI is badly designed and the whole mode learns you bad habits instead of good
Play a hero you enjoy, practice basic combos , you will git gud with practice. If you dont know combos look them up
Before the first obj play the map, lane or do camps
Obj starts always at 3:00 min
Around lvl 16 stay with the team and write “as 5” and stay as 5 because if you die it will most likely be GG
I should disagree. One should get used to the UI, map, and even basic controls when they’re beginners. When they’re up against players, theyre more under pressure to perform well and are more likely to get exposed to immature behavior when they’re at this level. There’s no need to expose yourself to that so early on.
The only think u can do is getting better, for example by:
Watch some twitch / YouTube videos
Ask some better players if they would teach you
watch your own replays and try to understand, what exactly was the reason you got killed and what you could do to improve there
Play every heroe on the free rotation, at least till level 5 to get a basic understanding when you face that heroe as an opponent
Focus on playing just 1-3 Main heroes, Till you get a basic understanding of the game mechanics and maps.
Nobody can really tell. But you will end up sooner or later at the point where you face even opponents and your winrate will stabilize around 50%:
We all startet at this point and tbh the only way to get really better is by getting stomped. If you stomp, you won’t learn anything.
Do yourself a favour and don’t listen to that. The only thing you learn in AI is a bad and false playstyle with bad habits, that won’t work out for you in a pvp environment.
Thoug if you have fun playin g vs bots, then go for it.
There is a rookie protection for the first few games, where you get matched with other rookies.
I can garentee you, this won’t serve your problem. Though LoL has a bigger Playerbase, all mobas have the same problem: really new players are rare, most of new accounts are smurfs / twinks. So even there you will end up being stomped. Especially because LoL is muuuuuuch harder to master mechanically then hots and mistakes gets punished muuuuuuuch harder then in hots.
Believe me, you will have an even harder time there.
Sure if you play it long enough. Were you expecting that’s all they’d do for a month?
I’m saying it actually takes an average human some time to get used to clicking, panning, the controls, etc. The majority of people here had previous experiences with mobas, so they don’t understand how the learning curve can be when it comes to casual gamers. My partner needed a lot of time against AIs before they ever felt comfortable going against humans.
Thank you guys for the helpful replies, we try to get better and hopefully soo have more fun again. Some of you said they had a similar experience in the beginning, but did any of you ever have a sub 30% winrate?
I have no idea how much AI you played, but don’t focus on the difficulty of the AI because AI doesn’t behave like humans. It’s probably better to just fight easy AI so you have more room to practice everything else. Having a moving target is enough to practice skill shots.
AI is the best place to try out different heroes. Get used to using skills, when objectives start, what is effective on each map and such.
ARAM is a good place to try new heroes and get involved in a lot of team fights without the worry about map mechanics. ARAM has no MMR.
QM is good to practice against humans and everything that comes with a normal match.
It is too soon for you to worry about your winrate because you have only played 25 games. Play 100+ matches within QM and or SL to have your MMR normalized. And yes, the population is low and you will be matched with varying skill level players; smurfs and trolls are a thing even after hundreds of matches.
Well said. The experience for new players is probably pretty crummy in 2021 because there aren’t that many genuine new players coming in, so you will invariably play against veterans, smurfs or even very skilled players (due to MMR averaging).
@OP One way to get better match quality could be to ask if you two could join a party of 3 others, though this does require maturity on their part not to get upset over beginner mistakes you may make. This will ensure you get a few competent allies every game and completely eliminates afks and trolls.
Sorry you are having a difficult time learning the game. May I ask what heroes you and your girlfriend are playing? It can honestly make a huge difference. I started out playing chromie and Zagara on AI mode, but that was a number of years ago. I would not advise a new player doing that. AI can still be a good place to learn if you have never played a MOBA, so you can get used to the controls.
I’m no ESL pro at the game, but I have clocked quite a few hours from casually enjoying HotS over the years. I tend to play healers, but I can flex DPS and Tank when the mood strikes me :). So if you and your girlfriend every want someone to chill with and play, and a brain to pick, feel free to hit me up :). I don’t have any friends that really play MOBAs. So I’m always looking to make new ones <3.
