How to make HotS great (from LoL veteran, diamond+)

Do people just not realize they can play 2 different games?? Like no one is stopping you from playing LoL alongside HotS. Why would you want 3 LoLs?

No objectives? Then what do you call dragons and Baron? Secondary goals?

Basically you want to make HotS a clone of LoL. Then why don’t you just stick with LoL? There’s nothing wrong with playing HotS just on the side.

Ahem, HotS actually has solo laning. It doesn’t last long, but it still exists.

I want to have a big map too, but it doesn’t mean i want to farm 10+ minutes in 1 lane.

And it’s a good stuff. I’m so tired of snowball in LoL, especially nowadays when it’s just impossible to win if you lost early game against some broken carry hero because LoL’s balance…well, it’s the worst of all mobas.

When I tried dota, I found that the laning phase was the boring part and missed the objectives and map diversity hots offered. It really depends on what you want in a moba to know which you like.

You do realize that every single map in HotS has a form of “jungle” in the camps?

Literally unless they added items/individual level, there isn’t a good way to change that.

I will admit the jungle is probably what I miss the most from DotA. And if there was a good way to add it into a map or three I would be happy.

So making a DotA map map as a clone wouldn’t really change much.

Except you would have something like cursed hollow, turned 45 degrees.. Actually, it would probably just be that. They could probably fart it out as a custom map with objectives disabled. Or people could just play cursed hollow and not channel the objective.

I do agree that having a small handful of ranked maps in the ranked rotation would be interesting. Like a 3-4 map rotation.

When they did their like, 8 map rotations it was just silly. Because it still is “to many” maps go really establish overall strategies for each map on the ladder.

I have never heard of this phenomenon before. A game that actively eases players in from their competition by being a copy and paste of the competition. Fascinating.

I don’t agree with everything you said, but this above is essential. How can people even find HOTS when it’s not advertised at all, and even the Blizz socials aren’t updated?

They said in an AMA in early 2020 they had planned to put more emphasis into advertising the game, this didn’t happen at all. This could be because of Covid19, but that doesn’t excuse the lack of attention given to their own social media accounts and the offical forums.

As veteran HoN player, who knows what you are talking about I am confused how you can miss the boring aspect called “jungle”. Doing pve and camps for days until you get your dagger or other farm items is just dull, the pve aspect in hots, where you have to makro all lanes and soak is far more dynamic than Dota2/HoN/LoL ever be. I don’t want another clone with this dull mechanic.

Exactly. The only people, who makes ads for this beautiful game are the streamers, artist on reddit or other players, but this is obviously not enough. For me personally Hots is Blizzards best game I don’t even play the others anymore, except HS sometimes, but not so much as I play Hots.

If you played game from alpha to early days of game release you know there actually was laning phase in old days. Game was much more dynamic with there usually being 3-4 laners and last 1-2 guys who would be gankers or junglers basically. But as time went on powercreep came with damage and wave clear shooting through the roof.
Now there is no reason to play anything other than 1-4 split because it’s safer and puts huge threat to enemy if they ever leave the 4 man unmatched. We also didn’t have passive exp so everything had to be soaked manually which slowed down the game and made laning more important. Leveling being slower early talents were significantly more important as was early game which are now just breezed through.
Exp had to be soaked by being roughly in vision range of minions dying. That made exp denial and lane freezing a thing now absent from game due to exp globes that stay there and magnetize when near so they are easy to grab. Exp globes also made rotations and catching soak in general much easier so you can clown around more since it made significantly more forgiving to bad players.
Mana costs were higher and self sustain much more rare and lower. Again it made game much more unforgiving for bad players who had no mana management skills. Sadly over the years both skill floor and cap within HoTS have significantly fallen due to design and balancing decisions.

Sorry to say that, but you don’t know what dynamic means, if you think your description is “more dynamic”. The current meta with 1 sololaner, who usually dual-soaks while others ganks/steal camps etc. very dynamic, because it creates constantly actions.

I think gameplay is the least of its issues. Blizz has to fix their tech first -> ignored keypresses, crashing, Loadingtimes, reconnect, etc. Else no matter how good you make gameplay if it doesnt work people wont play. We are not in the 90s anymore where limited options justified these drawbacks.

Also whoever thought it was a good idea to copy the monetisation system from lol should get some other job. Look at Dota, Look at LoL. Notice how Dota has split skins therefore more reason to buy stuff and better customizability. cant be that hard

To bad activision suits only think as far as their bank account. That they could have made a ton of money by beeing a bit less greedy thats to complicated for them to understand.

Back then every game was different in how the laning was going to be done and your job changing. Now it’s static 1-4 every single game.

Second and last, basicly the “changes” mentioned leans toward making Hots a LoL/Dota2 clone with some subjective opinion…Just like many other "LoL veterans who came by over the few years.

Map variety makes Hots stand out from both LoL and Dota2.
LoL and Dota2 with 1 map and same objectives over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over … and over again every match get booring after a while.

There are some ppl who enjoy constant actions … like ppl who work 8-12h labourer shifts in factorys … but i personally wana enjoy playing while at home…Labourer simulator legends is a nice place where i go to went some steam but im glad i ditched that game years ago.

Tormented Souls used to be mandatory before Malthael got a cleave on his AA. It helped that it also used to give him 25 Armor or something, which mixed with the insane healing his Q gave made him next to unkillable during the ult. You would pop your ult and for a few seconds you were an ultra-mobile tank-melting immortal deathball.

What I would give to have old Malthael back… of all the reworks they’ve done, that one is by far the worst in my opinion. They took a hero that was fine, and made him more boring, less viable, and less flavourful. The Archangel of Death should be an Assassin, not an XP vacuum.

Malthael got reworked?

Years ago, now. It wasn’t very long after he came out relatively. He used to be way more of a traditional assassin.

Oh. I see. I mean the roles got reworked so I guess it makes sense. Of all former assassins, Malthael was the only one who got reworked into a bruiser (The rest moved to melee and ranged assassins).

It really depends from position you play.
If you play carry - farming may be boring. But other positions (2-5) are pretty fascinating.

I’m saying that as positions 4-5 player.

Funny, I prefer playing Dota 2 instead hots nowadays because report system and matchmaking are much better in this game.

That’s what I do if someone calls me to play hots.

I prefer to not play hots entirely if I must play solo.

Thrall and Ragnaros used to be Assassins as well. At least they make sense as Bruisers.

Malthael’s rework was well before the role rework, though. It was like summer of 2018 or something. Some time around then. It was pretty minor on paper (like, I don’t even think any talents were removed or added), but shifting so much of his power to a cleave instead of raw damage changed his identity completely.

Curious question:

Let’s say you’ve spent 10 years playing the piano. With all that practice under your belt you’ve become quite good at it.

What activity do you find more enticing:

  • continuing to play the piano and bust out songs that only an expert can master or,
  • start learning the guitar and do boring stuff like play the scales?

The reason i ask is because i believe that HoTS’ biggest downfall was its release date.

LoL fans have devoted years learning the champions, their counters, map timings, what items to buy and when etc. Now that they’ve developed this huge knowledge base, it’s time to reap the rewards, pwn newbs and bask in the epeen…

…or they could try a new game where all that knowledge is no longer a thing. Even your last hitting skills was thrown out the window. Your epeen effectively starts from the beginning.

Thats how i felt when I used to be a devoted WoW player. After WoW, there were a ton of high quality MMORPG games that were released. However, i was not interested. All my time spent playing wow meant that i could be a level 70 awesome sauce paladin with wicked, sick glowing shoulder pads that required 18 hour weeks farming Black Temple to get. Why would i want to be a scrub jedi from SWtoR?

What are your thoughts on Dragon shire? I love that map because it’s multiple simultaneous duals happening all over the map.
