How does MMR work?

I’ve never really payed attention to it until now and I never really understood how Heroes of the Storm determines it. Now, I’ve seen people say that your rank is now your MMR. Did there used to be split MMR’s for different modes? Also how does it determine what your MMR is? Is it based on your in game actions (like when you use your abilities, positioning, stuff like that), stats, or just simply winning? Will you increase your MMR if you rank goes up because you won a Ranked match, but during the match you were completely carried?

I don’t understand. Sorry for my ignorance.

There still is AFAIK. But your initial ranked MMR is based partial on MMR from other modes (QM or unranked).

MMR is calculated entirely from win/loss chances. This is essentialy the old favored adjustment.

yes it use to be separated. now your rank shown is your MMR.

it can separate temporarily if you gain penalty games. however, after you have finished your penalty games blizz has said that your MMR returns to normal.

for players with existing HL/SL/TL games then it is based on your previous ranked games. for players with no ranked games it then is based on your Unranked Draft games.

So lets say the enemy team is better than you, higher MMR and your team has a lower MMR. Even if you play horribly, but win, your MMR will increase?

Does it gather information from past seasons like from 2018 for example? Can you be Silver 4 one season and then next season when you do placement matches be placed in Platinum 5? That’s what I don’t understand. If it gathers information from past ranked games, then why are placement matches a thing? Last season I was placed in Silver 5 but moved to Silver 4 during the season. This season, I played much better in my placement matches but still entered Silver 5. Meanwhile, my brother was in Gold 4 last season and was placed in Platinum 4 or 5 this season. That’s what I don’t get.

Don’t use the jump from the pre-season (last season) and this one, because something unique happened. Prior to the current season, you had a rank and an MMR, and the two could be different for a variety of reasons. There were attempts in game to address this, Personal Performance Based Match-Making Rating, PPBMMR (which was a failure), and Personal Rank Adjustment, PRA, which was confusing.

This season, they did away with all that and only have your MMR, upon which your rank is based. What this means is that if at the end of last season, your rank and MMR were too different, your placement this season would often result in a very different rank result. If your previous season rank and MMR were close, you didn’t move much after placements. In your brother’s case, his MMR was much higher than his rank, so he was bumped up accordingly.

And yes, MMR is based solely on wins and losses, which is why they have these rules on how new accounts are placed, and how groups cannot contain a large gap in rank when queuing. This is to reduce the number of cases where high ranked players can essentially carry, or boost, a lower ranked player.

The exception is there are no rank rules when you queue as a party of five, but if there is a large gap in MMR, the lowest one(s) are ignored for matchmaking purposes. If you are Silver and queue with 4 Diamonds, you will get a full Diamond MMR match. If you are Silver and queue with 4 Golds, you will have a Silver/Gold MMR match, as it will do its best to average the MMR between both teams.

Ohh.

That would explain why I sucked in those matches we played together.

Eh, those were tough matches, and at least one of them we had a good chance to win. Everyone makes mistakes!

I made lots of mistakes. And they punished us for them. I think the saying “you’re only as strong as your weakest” fits here. On the other hand, I have some replays to watch so I can see what you guys did and what the enemy team did. That I am thankful for.

It puts 3 or 4 potatoes with me, and less in enemy team. That’s how it Works!

Right now I am with a 4-potatoe-party that only feeds middle, just like any other game without a party xD

it doesn’t. I had my hopes up I was wrong. you get capped based on the level of play and wins factor to much into it. I play at about a gold 3 low plat level but im basicly stuck in silver because of how bad the mm is. the three rules of thumb ive come to while playing ranked are and my 1 qm rule of thumb.

1: disable chat. just disable it no one under plat knows what they are doing its the only way to get a ban in this game and its pointless to try and reason with these people they will int you.
2: all the good players are on one team 100% of the time meaning one team has 2 good players and 3 meh to trash players. the best you can do is sit back and hope a come back play happens reducing your death counts and padding your stats will lower your lp loss.
3. learn the bad habits teammates have and find a way to cope with them.
4. qm will constantly put counters to you if you win to much hints the forced 50-50
I play tracer I get a enemy genji pretty much 100% of the time
I play a squishy they get a kt and a greymane.
I play greymane they get anub +1 tank and all the cc in the world.
they try to say this is to balance mm its not. its because if tey don’t screw you over you win to much with 3 level difference. the result is good players have mmr that constantly sky rockets and drops like a rock or stagnates with cancer inducing games. my observations are typically accurate so it might not be 100% right but it should be in the ball park.

this games dead because they allow all the bad behaviors feeding deaths/refusal to participate aka afking that make bad teammates so miserable while banning for anything that would correct it aka “flaming”. tbh there is no reason to play heroes of the storm when it uses the same system as league and league because of its bigger community is better in regards to mm.

blizzard doesn’t want this game to make it anymore they keep teasing hope when there just isn’t any.

if you haven’t gotten a ban its not because you aren’t toxic its because you didn’t go out of your way to piss the toxic people off. again it uses basically the same ban bot as league of legends does. plenty of people will tell you that its literally a matter of how angry you get when having to deal with repeative amounts of trolls feeders and afks that cause most of the bans there. its the same ban bot any fair play alliance game uses and its only purpose is to kill less popular games like heroes of the storm because why play heroes of the storm when you can play league of legends which has a bigger player base and better mm as a result of it.

oh and they care more about swearing then they should. they care so much that they mandated a filter to the forums as a key update to that update they did to the forums.

to be blunt none of the fair play alliance games are worth playing by design they favor the leftist sjws who are the primary ones who use the ban bot because they cant handle disagreement ever. it means little to no community development which means lethargic unhappy player bases that will seep into the game.

you can argue all you want but I have yet to find any of these games to be more then that. “just mute and report bro” because reporting is apparently more fun for these people then playing the game.

that’s why you avoid qm unless your going to be with a party. its utterly worthless to try and solo que. “communication is important” try telling a retard to turn In on black heart bay and hill run to the enemy and feed coins. that’s what actually happens which is why the chats are usually dead.

Soooo this is going to sound nastier than I mean it, but how do you know you play at high gold/low plat level?

the same way I know it was trolls that peigon held me at silver 4 last season.

“hurr durr see you in bronze”

that was a common line among them

me-silver 4 still at the end of the season
them-bronze 3

the big issue I have is I cant stand morons. legitimately cant stand them. instead of muting the morons like I need to I try to reason with them and when I finally got just before gold 4 I let it get to my head because I actually do know im right. anyways instead of leaving it muted I turned on the chat let the stupid flow and im back to silver. the games just not enjoyable to play try hard 24/7 and covering for these people gets tedious.

I will get gold 3 before the end of the season assuming I don’t quit the game but ya. blizzard has made it clear they only want the problems to be here and its depopulating the game.

they need to allow the dumpster fire removing the ban bot would cause if they want to keep the game working. im thinking about just dropping this garbage mm for the league of legends mm since the social aspect is no better but the mm aspect is better due to a larger player base.

to put it more simply and bluntly there isn’t a game that I don’t reach low plat in…

I have maybe 100 ranked matches in heroes of the storm.

Okay.

I ask because I have seen A LOT of people making the claim that they would be rank x except noobs blah blah, and while I don’t think that’s universally false, I find myself more and more skeptical of that sort of claim.

However, if you’ve been there before and are grinding there again then you probably do play at that level. Best of luck with your grind.

I never liked that part of gaming. If I don’t enjoy the act, I don’t want to spend my limited free time doing it.

a guy asked me if the recent mm changes putting me bronze 5 if I would whine about it. I wouldn’t. and I got placed silver 1 because my mmr was that high compared to my rank.

you don’t need luck in games. its a sad truth the better player/1v1or better team5v5 will win. mentally im not sure if I want to do the grind. id honestly be happy quitting ranked all together and never touching that abomination again.

all that’s required to get gold 3 is a have a decent premade +/ muting chat. it gets so boring to play in silence after awhile for me.

it works so you will stabilize in a 50% win rate ratio
You can climb in ranks by laddering seasons over seasons

No, you don’t need luck in games. You need luck in the MMR mixing potatoes…

which is why it would take 2 very very painful seasons to get where I actually belong and honestly don’t wanna spend the time to do it.

even that shouldn’t be luck based its just sh*tty game design in the end. a good or even great system will put you at your skill level with none of the doubt that blizzard system has.

blizzards system is genuine trash to be nice about it.
