With the announcement of the HFC not making a return in 2019, it seems HoTS has started a steady decline towards being a defunct game. A rare situation on this day and age for a Blizzard game, however not completely unheard of. But with the situation as dire and desparate as it seems, there is a ray of hope, an idea that I’ve been wrapping my head around in the past few months, an overhaul, revival or reinvention of this game. Now, before you all call doom and gloom, please allow me a few minutes of your time to elaborate.
Back in 2010, the UpperDeck-YuGiOh scanadal erupted that almost killed of two WoW spin-off games, WoW TCG and WoW Minis. Though TCG was taken by Cryptozoic, formed by formed Blizzard employees who knew UD was going to loose WoW TCG and decided to keep it alive. That game essentially became HearthStone, which we are all very well aware of how huge and popular it is today.
However, the crisis for WoW Minis came in the era of the Miniature Games decay, that almost ended games like Heroclix whilst taking victims like StarWars, D&D and of course WoW Minis. This game however had a very good risk-reward system in which Team Composition and Strategic Planning where key in winning the game. Anyone else find these concepts familiar? Well you should, as that it what HoTS is based upon.
Now, with this in mind, I’m not suggesting for HoTS to become WoW Minis (though I’d love to), but rather make WoW Minis become HoTS. What this means is to make HoTS a Turn Based-MOBA of sorts, where you make a team comp of say 5 heroes, to manitain the HoTS formula, with the very same map mecanics that are present in the game but introduce the Turn-Based/Risk-Reward/Timer-Based mechanics of WoW Minis. With the vast array of heores and skins that HoTS has, this game could easily be transofrmed into a 1v1 (based on the number of players) rather than 5v5 game, as team based games seem to be becoming less popular over solitaire based games, again like HearthStone.
This could even mean that the PvE elements of WoW Minis could be introduced where a team of 2-3 or even 4 players take on a instance or raid-based boss (as each player could control 5 characters) and take on challenges that way as well.
This is of course a sort of hopefull dream of mine, but would love to hear your take on this idea and maybe HoTS could become relevant this way again.
And if any Blizz Devs are reading…please make this game come to consoles too, as having Ps4, XB1 and Switch players would just add to the player base and make more people interested.
