Full Shadow Dagger Sylvanas Guide

Someone suggested I make a Sylvanas guide and I felt like I should go through with it. Seems fun. Also, I just hit 1000 forum posts, so to celebrate it seems fitting I make a topic about my all time favorite Blizzard character. This will be Sylvanas’s Shadow Dagger Build, my most used and favorite build.

First things first, this is how I personally play Sylvanas and I will be showcasing this build how I use it. If you’re looking for a guide to learn how to play Sylvanas’s Shadow Dagger Build then this should be a great place to start, however know that you don’t have to follow this build to the teeth, but it is suggested to. It has 2 separate mini-builds inside this one build, so its versatile.

Before we jump in, lets discuss her talents and builds

Talents: To make this shorter use this link to look at the talents
https://heroesofthestorm.gamepedia.com/Sylvanas#Talents

Ability Breakdown:

Black Arrows (D) Trait: This is mostly for pushing because it stops buildings/minions/mercs from attacking allowing you to push well if left alone. It can also be used for defense. Simply activate it using D and either auto/basic attack, throw a dagger and auto attack the dagger target, or cast E over whatever you want to freeze.
Note: you can throw a dagger at a building to spread the Black Arrows to other nearby non-hero/elite units (explained further below).

Withering Fire (Q): This is mainly just an additional damage ability in this build. I believe these shots also allow the Shadow Dagger to spread. Its useful for when enemies are running away and you can’t stop and auto/basic attack. Its also great for burst damage. Other than that, just use it when heroes are nearby do deal additional damage to them. There is a build based off of this ability but I’m not covering that one today, sorry.

Shadow Dagger (W): The foundation of this build. Crucial for this build. The main focus of this build is to gain Unfurling Shadow stacks, which I will call “Dagger stacks”. The more Dagger stacks you gain, the more damage you will do with this ability both initially casted and spread to other enemies. Stacking up this ability is very important. (Explained further below).

Haunting Wave (E): Another very important part of the build and Sylvanas herself. I will explain more below but this can be used for 3 things, to engage, to disengage, and to apply Banshee’s Curse to all units/heroes hit (Explained further below). You can teleport with this ability which makes it so important to Sylvanas’s kit. To teleport, simply cast it, and however far the wave goes, and Sylvanas will teleport to where its at by clicking E again. Simply said, but to use effectively in combat takes practice.

Trick: to deceive opponents or escape, cast the ability you want to go, but run the opposite direction of the wave, then teleport. If you do this right, you’ll most likely be safe. The reason this works is you’ll have the enemies follow you but the distance you create between your final destination and where you are luring your enemies is large. When you teleport, you’ll have a larger space in between you and the enemy. It can also go over walls so use that to your advantage.

Note: If the enemies follow you, teleport. If the enemies follow the wave, keep running and hope you get away or try to wait to cast it again and repeat. Be careful, the enemy might catch on to your patterns so its important to see what your opponents do and react to it. Try not to be predictable.

Wailing Arrow (R1): Useful for the silence, to finish kills, or to engage. Its best to wait until they are grouped so that all the enemies can be silenced, then you engage and hopefully secure a kill. Its also good for stopping duration abilities like Anduin’s protection, ETC’s Mosh Pit, Li Ming’s level 20 beam, among other things. It can also be used 1v1 to make the enemy not be able to use abilities for a short time while you burst them down. Not super effective against auto/attack heroes… as much but still stops them from using abilities.

Mind Control (R2): This is more like a taunt/stun except you bring the target closer to you. This is great when dueling because you can spam your abilities and auto attack them and you’ll definitely do a lot of damage. If targeted right, it can help take out a hero. It can also be used as an ability canceler so don’t forget that. Great for targeting and bursting down a single hero, not effective against a grouped team without your team’s help.

Talent Tree (suggested):
Level 1: Unfurling Shadows
Level 4: Unstable Poison
Level 7: Lost Soul or Festering Wounds
Level 10: Mind Control I’ve found better with Lost Soul. Wailing Arrow I’ve found more useful with Festering Wounds
Level 13: Take Remorseless if you chose Lost Soul. Take Windrunner if you chose Festering Wounds. Cold Embrace can work well with both.
Level 16: Life Drain (Will of the Forsaken if you have heavy CC on enemy team)
Level 20: R upgrade for either ultimate, Bolt of the Storm if you need extra chase/escape power.

This build is designed to empower your Shadow Dagger (W) and you can do that with AA’s or your spells.

How to stack up your W:

  • Stage 1 - If you read the talents you’d know that you need 3 stacks of Banshee’s Curse in order to stack your W. You apply Banshee’s Curse by auto/basic attacking a hero 3 times within a certain time or using your E Ability with the Festering Wounds talent. This talent automatically applies 3 stacks of Banshee’s Curse to anyone it hits. Try to throw your E to cover as many heroes as possible to mark them.
  • Stage 2 - Throw your W ability at any hero once they have 3 stacks of Banshee’s Curse to start stacking.
Note: Auto/basic attacking whatever target you threw your W at, will spread the Shadow Dagger to enemies nearby resulting in more possible stacks (math explained below after examples).

Examples:

  1. You can throw your dagger to a cannon tower or other building/unit and if you have enemies nearby with 3 stacks of Banshee’s Curse, it will spread to anything nearby and you are rewarded stacks if it hits a hero. This is useful if you cant consistently hit a hero 3 times safely.
  2. Enemy boss is pushing and the enemy team is with it. Get 3 stacks of Banshee’s Curse on any enemy hero using the E ability or through auto/basic attacking a hero 3 times, throw the W at the boss and auto attack the boss.
These 2 methods help against hyper mobile heroes and if you can’t overextend. If you spread your dagger to 2 or more heroes with 3 stacks of Banshee’s Curse, it will give you about 6 stacks multiplied by the number of heroes. Ex: if you spread your Shadow Dagger to a total of 3 heroes that are all affected by 3 stacks of Banshee’s Curse you will get 18 stacks for that one use of your W

So that’s how you stack. Let’s look at why the talents you chose are important. There is no limit to how many stacks you can get so get as many as possible.

Level 1: Unfurling Shadows is the base. Without it, you can’t empower your W ability.
Level 4: Unstable Poison gives Sylvanas great wave clear. Pretty much it. If you throw a W on a wave and auto/basic attack the target, you’l clear it fast. Throw in a Q also, it helps.
Level 7:

  • Lost Soul - reduces cool down so you can use your W ability more often. It’s great for dueling because you’ll be stacking up your Dagger stacks while dealing a lot of damage to your enemy.

  • How to stack using this talent:
Auto/basic all the time on heroes and throw your W on them. Repeat over and over. Your cool downs are reduced with every auto/basic attack so as long as you keep auto/basic attacking, you’ll be able to throw more W’s. This talent requires consistent auto/basic attacks and it helps if you know how to stutter step well. Stutter stepping is almost crucial in order to kite and chase. Its great if you can auto/basic attack a lot without interruption. Weak to blinds, stuns and heroes who can block auto attacks (Illidan, Varian, Chen), and heroes who reduce auto/basic attack speed (Rehgar, Arthas)

  • Festering Wounds - allows you to apply multiple heroes with Banshee’s Curse with one cast of E, which allows you to gain multiple Dagger stacks very quickly. This is great for if you are unable to consistently hit auto/basic attacks on heroes because of blinds, stuns and things of the sort. Weak against silences/taunts.
Note: Heroes with spell reduction/armor talents are less affected by the spell damage from your W, but it doesn’t affect your ability to stack.

  • How to stack using this talent:
Throw both the W ability at a unit nearby your group of heroes and E ability over a group of heroes and auto/basic attack the target of your W. Make sure you auto/basic attack the target you threw the W at so you can spread the Shadow Dagger
Edit note: Using your E to gain stacks puts your escape mechanism on cool down. Beware.

Level 10:

  • Wailing Arrow is great for silencing a team specially when used with Festering Wounds because it silences them, allowing you to throw your E and W and auto/basic attack for a good amount of stacks. Most of the ability I explained above.

  • Mind Control is great with Lost Souls because you can focus the target, auto/basic attack them and reduce the cool down of your W because of it allowing you to cast multiple W’s in a shorter time than normal. Good way to stack or burst down a hero. I’d save it to finish off a hero, not really to engage since it only affects one person.
Both level 10 talents are good but it depends on your play style.

Level 13:

  • Remorseless allows you to occasionally throw a W so that’s good, but mainly it increases your range so you can reduce your Lost Souls more often. Might not look like much but the range increase is what is most useful.
  • Windrunner allows you to engage and disengage in a tricky, yet effective Genji like style. In order to use the double teleport you first have to teleport one way, then cast E the second desired duration. So it can be in/out or you can chase a bit better. In addition, if you use it over heroes, you can apply Banshee’s Curse another time, allowing you to stack again. I suggest trying to teleport over the enemy team so you can mess with them and keep them cursed. This. Takes. Practice To. Perfect.
Note: Each time you teleport, it will reset the Q talent so don’t forget to use your Q when you teleport.
  • Cold Embrace lowers armor. Useful across the board with either of the level 7 talents. Only affects damage output, not stacking ability. Its a pretty passive, yet powerful talent.

Level 16:

  • Life Drain is a go to with this build, either variant you chose because it gives Sylvanas sustain she didn’t normally have. The more you stack up your W, the more damage you will do and therefore more healing you will do in return. Only take if you don’t have an issue with CC.
  • Will of the Forsaken is a must pick if you keep getting stunned locked and such. Only choose this if you are having trouble with CC during the match because you’ll be missing out on self sustain.
Note: You have until level 16 to decide which talent you need.

Level 20:

  • Bolt of the Storm is only useful if you need assistance with engaging and retreating or even dodging sill shots. Otherwise upgrade your Heroic ability (Deafening Blast or Dark Lady’s Call).

What is my role with this build?:

  • Your main role is to deal damage, so your main goal is to get as many Dagger stacks as possible. It helps you deal more damage. If you don’t get a good amount of Dagger stacks, you stunt her ability to deal damage. So your #1 priority is to get stacked! I’ve seen that 10-15 stacks per minute is a decent stacking rate.
Hint: You can stack off of the Dragon Knight and The Protector objectives so if the enemy got one of those objectives, just use that to stack up your W. Just be careful.
  • Another role you can do is push lanes, but not all the time. If you think laning might be good at times, then do it. You have the ability to do that well. I would try not to get tunnel visioned though because ganks will happen.
  • You need to be there during team fights. Sylvanas is so amazing at dealing damage during team fights and you being there makes a big difference. Also, you should be stacking anyway.
  • Minimize deaths. The longer you are dead, the more stacks you’re missing out of. But that’s pretty much the same for all heroes.
  • This build is a jack of all trades build that can do a little bit of everything. Clear waves, soak, push lanes, freeze a lane, deal team fight damage, secure kills, silence enemy heroes, and she can escape pretty well. I’d just make sure you are where you are supposed to be, and not pushing a lane during a large team fight or objective for example.

Things to watch out for:

  • CC. She is susceptible to it and can be pretty squishy if you get stunned locked. Its good to play aggressive, but not stupid.
  • Bursty heroes. Sylvanas doesn’t do well against burst and as far as I know, doesn’t have any shield or damage reduction talents so you get what you get as far as health.
  • Use walls/terrain to help escape. Using your E over terrain is one of the best ways to escape. Pay attention when you’re escaping and try think on your feet.
  • Be confident, but not overconfident. You’re useless when you’re still respawning.

This pretty much sums up my guide on Sylvanas’s Shadow Dagger. Once you try her out and get used to how she works, this build will get easier. I hope I covered everything about these builds. If you have questions, feel free to ask. Sylvanas is one of the most powerful ranged assassins in the game, if not the best. This is very long, but if anyone wants another Sylvanas build guide, I’d be happy to make another. (If you are interested in me creating another build guide, post a purple heart at the bottom of your posts/replies).

Victory for the Forsaken! :purple_heart:

Just to make an addendum:

This talent is also great if the enemy team has a tendency to clump often as you can blanket multiple enemies with full curse which multiples the stacks you get on W. So if you blanket 2 people with E and then toss a dagger, AA dmg on the dagger target will generate 2 stacks of curse per auto, provided that the cursed remain near each other for the dmg to leap.

The drawback to this talent is that you’re using your escape offensively so vigilant divers could converge on your position, resulting in you having to rely on your team to bail you out of a bad situation.

Fortunately, this talent is a lvl 7 talent so you’ll have a few minutes to analyze the enemy playstyles, allowing you to pick your talent accordingly.

I’ll either go festering wounds or lost soul, depending on the enemy playstyle if I’m using W build.

Another thing to note about Windrunner is that you HAVE to teleport in order to get your E reset. If you don’t teleport with the first haunting wave, you will incur the full cooldown of haunting wave.

As a result, it’s either a great defensive talent, a good talent that promotes aggressive gameplay, or it can shaft you.

In TFs or duels, seconds matter and you may launch a haunting wave with the intention of teleporting but notice that the potential port location is now disadvantageous. You have now foiled your plans of having a second haunting wave which could lead to your demise.

Again, assess the battlefield and pick appropriately. Sometimes, I’m allowed to play aggressively when I’m enabled by a good team and sometimes I’ll have to play more defensively. In those cases, Cold embrace is the go to talent for me.

That way, your plans for having a second haunting wave up your sleeve can never be foiled because you’re not talented into it.

I also take this talent when faced with aggressive divers. It’s an instantaneous port and the distance traveled is a little longer than Genji’s cybernetic agility (leap). If you’ve used thrall’s or butcher’s lvl 20 blink, it’s pretty much the same thing. You can go over terrain as well so if a butcher charges, you can blink and haunting wave back and forth to cause him to run like a moron for the duration of the charge unless he cancels it lol.

Great guide, I usually choose a Q and Auto Attack hybrid, but I do love the dagger build. I like your breakdown on each of them, you went into good detail on them.
The only thing I might suggest adding is more suggestions as to what counters on the enemy team you struggle to use the W build with, but all in all you seem to have everything covered.

Thanks for helping teach people

*Festering Wounds talent
Just a small oversight I reckon…

This talent also makes it so that if you AA a hero with 3 stacks of Banshee’s Curse, an additional arrow will be fired to a different hero. This arrow stacks Banshee’s Curse as well.

Personally, when I go W-quest, I usually go between Lost Souls and Festering Wounds like this:

Are they super tanky, fighty team? – Lost souls
Are they not? (As in, you wont really get much chances to AA?) — Festering Wounds.

The problem with Lost Souls is that in a typical teamfight, a Sylvanas will usually not be allowed to just sit and AA without being attacked herself, making it more useful against more tanky teams that are more clumped up where one could be allowed to go crazy with AA’ing the same target without dangerous interference.

I have an old vid of when I got crazily stacked in a Brawl where our team had no healers but dozens of tanks and the enemy team was also úber tanky.

When I go Festering Wounds, I always go for Silence arrow at 10 and double E at 13. Otherwise Festering Wounds is a bit too… detrimental, in that you always throw away your escape ability when you try to stack your quest. I’ve seen it so many times with other sylvanas; they use E offensively and then get jumped and killed. Kinda sad…

I love going E straight through the enemy, teleport, instant silence arrow on top of them, E away~~

As for level 16 talents I’m heavily in favour of Evasive Fire. Can get you 30% movement speed and you can keep that up indefinitely if you just keep AA’ing. I find it gives way better survivability than a little bit of life drain.

That is, if you don’t need Will of the Forsaken.

I find that Life Drain doesn’t really drain all that much to make it valuable, but that’s just my opinion. In comparison to 30% movement speed anyway.

Also, as far as I’m concerned, Mind Control is the superior overall ulti, because the level 20 upgrade not only gives it a blinding effect like Isolation from DEhaka, but also reduces its’ cooldown to 20 seconds…

And since we’re in a Sylvanas thread here, I was wondering one thing about Sylvanas’ 20 talents; Witheriing Barrage

“Enemies Heroes hit by Withering fire reduces its cooldown by 0.75 seconds”

Meaning a full Q on a hero will reduce it by 3.75 seconds. Which is half of it’s full cooldown.

I’ve always looked at this talent as rather useless. If you’re going Q build, you’d most likely go double E at 13, which resets Q anyway…

Does any Sylvanas’ out there find this talent to be storm-tier worthy?

Did you mean Festering Wounds?

I would actually recommend reversing this if you’re dealing with groups of enemies clumped up.

Festering Wounds not only applies 3 stacks of Banshee’s Curse, but it also deals damage, which means hitting a target already afflicted with Shadow Dagger causes it to spread.

If your enemies are grouped up, you can throw out a Dagger on one of them, then launch a Haunting Wave through the group of them to simultaneously spread the DoT to the entire group and apply full stacks of BC to all of them. This allows for some obscenely fast stacking and reliable AoE damage.

My question, how to tell my team that?
i stopped playing sylvanas coz i was forced to lane like a zagara or gazlowe, didnt get my stacks enough. and was torn between soaking n team fights, i have 47% winrate with her.

Oh, and, whts ur highest stacks on W ?
my average was 150 to 200 stacks in game. highest was 298. i died right before i could hit my W (had casted my E to get banshee curse) died to boss stun on core, desperate to cross 300 mark (it was a lost game)

Good additions. They’re correct. Sorry for not including them, took like 2 hours while at work.

Missed that in my revision. Thanks. Will fix it right away.

To be very honest, if you are going Dagger you should be going Festering Wound, Dagger is specifically picked for the Burst build that runs through the meta that she stands in as we speak on top of other Q/AA focused builds.

Also that talent info from the Icy Viens speak for how poorly written it is and misses couple of points, rates very important talents as “situational”/“not recommended” or dismissing a talent that isn’t even bad to begin with while recommending talents that are at best situational, typical Icy Viens trying to act smart.

Everytime i get sylvanas in brawl… the game ends before even reaching lvl16…

500 stacks is aweosme,

my highest was 298 in ranked on dragon shire i believe

Thank you for your kind words. Many veterans on the forums can (and have) correct(ed) me on things and I’m thankful. Its hard to cover a hero with as much detail as I tried to do. Forums help clear up things I missed.

A great way to play Sylvanas!

I personally lean towards Life Drain, but you make a good point.

For a Q build its really good.

I wouldn’t take Windrunner at level 13, I’d take Remorseless or Cold Embrace. Lowering cooldowns on Sylvanas’s Q build would help a lot. I’d say its a storm tier for a Q build Sylvanas.

This is a Shadow Dagger build guide though so…

Nice insight, but it works either way you do it. Simple enough for a learner. A player learning Sylvanas will figure it out.

Don’t worry about your win rate. Just try to get better with her by minimizing deaths and trying to stack up W. And you can’t tell anyone that she’s the most powerful, you have to show it. Stats aren’t everything but if you’re top in all categories, you’re playing her right. A good Sylvanas can change the tide of the match. I can’t say that about every hero.

I used to average above 200 stacks but recently I haven’t been able to. I stopped playing Sylvanas for a month or two and lost my touch. I remember getting 280 once.

I agree, but its not the only way to play her. I wanted to give variety so learners can adjust how they play her to match their play style.

I only linked it so people can view the actual talents, not the “guide” aspect of it.

my deaths are not much, and my hero damage is low in start, and then top damage with more kills later game…
guess i shud come back to her now, as im playing in a party of 4 or 5 for the past week, i usually played solo with her.

i didnt feel threaten by any hero while i play her… just tht zeratul was a pain, valeera was not much pain, but i had to b extra aware n knock he out of stealth.
butcher (as most wil think) not a pain, specially with tht unstoppable and movement speed talent, i go tht instead of life drain against butcher, otherwise mostly life drain.
and i played shadow dagger in start for the dings.
later i changed to Q build so tht i dnt hav the urge to stack, and not torn between stacking n laning, did fine then, but still, tht season also, roughly 48 49% winrate.
i wil try her again once my Greymane is lvl100 … hes currently at mmm 98.66 lvl

No worries. I figured I add in some additional insight to compensate for what was missing but overall, it’s pretty accurate.

I also like evasive fire, just not when I’m going W build. The healing from life drain is substantial in team fights and helps keep you in the game when dueling with squishier foes like Valla, Nova, or Zeratul.

A Nova tried to jump me last game and once I fully stacked on her, she couldn’t get me below 50% so she triple tapped and then I interrupted it with wailing arrow before killing her.

I don’t think the source is important when the information is the same. Pointless to complain about a source, but I changed it anyway.

Sylvanas starts relatively slow, especially with this build because you need to stack up in order to deal lots of damage. This is normal. As long as you’re stacking up, helping your team, and not dying, you should be fine.

Shadow Dagger build is not a lane push build. If someone tells you “Sylvanas soak bottom or top,” say that you need stacks in a polite way. However there is an option if you feel like solo laning is the best thing for you to do.

What I’ve done in the past is try to solo lane against someone I can stack up on. Most melee heroes are good to solo lane against because you can just stay back and use your range to stack in those situations. If they complain about your low damage after they told you to soak, then just disregard what they said and do whatever you think will help your team.
One time a muradin told me “Sylvanas has the least xp and that’s her job” (I was leading in damage at that point), so then I start clearing lanes and soaking. Then he says, “Sylvanas useless, no damage” (I was leading in xp at this point).

You can’t please some people. That’s just toxicity. Don’t let it bother you. Ignore it and just play your best game.

I am going to edit and incorporate what fellow forumers said that I feel fits good in the guide. Thanks.

Yep. Evasive Fire is great, just not in this particular build. Q build is where its really good.

True, thats why i shifted to the Q build.

Well people dont draft a bruiser to solo lane down here in bronze…
Else i think i would drop festering wounds and get the W cd talent and stack on somone like leoric or sonya. Can stack faster like that compared to using my E for it.

But i will try playing her again as im playing in 5man party often now, but once my Greymane is lvl100

You could have drastically shortened that big wall of text simply by explaining a difference between playing single target dagger build and the variant where you take Festering Wounds. Otherwise +upvote for effort.

Q build is not bad. It’s probably her most flexible build. Q build does decent dmg and you can easily top dmg with Q build but your dmg potential in Q build is a lot lower than your dmg potential in W build.

The best thing about Q build is you can stay and go as you please. You don’t feel grounded by someone you 3 stacked with BC so you can play a lot more safely since your dmg is not reliant on stacks.

Typically, when you go W build, you have to split second decide whether you want to optimize your dmg or retreat to avoid death in order to be effective. If you go Q build, you can weave in and out of fights at your leisure because your dmg isn’t tied to stacking full stacks and AAing. Q build is more reactionary while W build requires some set up. That set up is based upon you, your team, or both.

that precisely, not torn between stacking n soaking…
just soak n join team for gank n obj as any other hero

That’s one way to do it.

Can you elaborate or show quotes so I know what you’re talking about? I’m all for making it easier to read.
