I find it the most difficult and unreliable mobility spell in HOTS to date. Sure it looks cool and undoubtly has potential but i oftentimes try to save it as an escape rather than an engage because i find most opponents can dogde it easily. It becomes stronger thanks to various talents but I still find it a difficult ability to utilize.
I very rarely bounce with it. Most of the time I use it as a regular dash, even when I’m engaging. It’s good to get in front of an enemy and cut them off, while even dealing some damage as you pass by.
Generally, the only time bounces get used is against mercs or at tight objectives. Purposefully going for bounces is too unreliable otherwise, even comboing with the trait or Hoardapult.
It doesn’t really need to be anything more, though. It’s a great tool for clearing lanes, catching up to people, and finishing players off. There’s honestly no reason to get fancy.
Select Hot Keys->Quick Cast Settings->Per Ability Quick Cast Setting:
Pick hogger in the drop down and select On Release for Hogg Wild.
Then accept
On release will show guidelines for the talent and wont activate till you release the key on the keyboard. It might slow you down a little but it will help you line up the talent to bounce back and forth.
find an angle with manual aiming that let’s you bounce between two parallels or at least on a single repeatable route for eternity. There are guides on reddit and maybe here too about where those parallel (I saw some from @lucifer)
For escape:
even one bounce can be enough if the angle is wide enough since Hogg Wild is really fast.
(For engage, it’s just like any other mobility.)
For teamfights:
tight places give you the most value which guarantee a lot of ricochet. You can either aim “blind” hoping for the best which is good in those narrow corridors or manually aim for a route that bounces a lot.
As others said: On release can help a lot.
you just use it as a straightlined aoe. You want full Rage for that for max dmg (and cdr).
For example, if you have max Rage and you picked the lvl 4 E talent, you can kill unexpected D.vas single handedly while they’re waiting their Mech to explode.
Just practice man and watch how pros do it on youtube. saving hog wild for only escapes is a waste, hogger has a fair amount of survivability without E. You should be using it pretty much on cooldown. It does lots of damage (at max rage), clears waves, captures mercs, gives you unstoppable, gives you armor (with talent), generates rage (with talent). I know this cause ive been playing hogger for two weeks now and sucked with him cause I wasnt using hog wild enough and had really low damage numbers. It is THE hogger ability which really defines him and sets him apart from other heroes, along with his loot.
Here are some tips:
any time an enemy is near a wall is potential to use his E, just make sure you dont bounce off and find yourself out of position 1v5 or you’re dead. you can always cancel the E early if you feel you’re moving too far out of position. E into them, bounce off the wall, and spin through them a second time on the rebound.
use your Q first to slam anything into a wall to gain rage. More rage means more dmg from hog wild
Every time you bounce you’ll get an arrow indicating where you will bounce to, cancel it immediately if you’re bouncing somewhere you dont want
fighting in a tight corridor? Q them and immediately go for hog wild making sure the bounce angle is tight, you want to ricochet back and forth through them as many times as possible without flying out of position
when enemies and minions arent close enough to walls to Q, throw ur loot behind them, Q them into your loot, and E into them – bounce off the loot — and E back through them on the bounce.
when enemies are fighting at their gate you can hogg wild into them, bounce off their own gate, and then tear through them again on the rebound. You’ll get hit by the towers but not many shots or damage as you’re too quick. Your E will hit heroes and their minions generating lots of rage and damage on the way in and out, clearing their minions and doing lots of hero dmg.
hog wild is scary on certain maps like the shrines on dragon shire where u can sit on the capture point and just bounce back and forth between two walls making it hard for ppl to contest without eating serious dmg. on infernal shrines and tomb of the spider the objectives have four pillars/corners where if you hogg wild correctly you will continuously spin in a square around the objective.
Just keep practicing the angles until you can get really good intuitive bounces without having to look and wait for your indicator to show you where your bounce trajectory is and trying to line it up perfectly every time. Its kind of like learning hanzo scatter shot.
95% of the times I use it with no bounce at all for escape (if it bounces, fine, but I don’t even aim for it, when I need a clutch escape). The range is long enough to already be a very reliable form of disengage. Also, the unstoppable part is crucial to proper use of it too. Genji gets stunned out of his dash, hogger just spins away to safety, no matter what’s thrown at him.
Often just quick avoidance of cc is more than enough to escape death, don’t even need to travel anywhere (can always fly away into the sunset with R (that one is interruptible), if really needed after dodging the cc).
