I usually only unlock my camera when I play Ragnaros and I’m using Molten core, or if I’m playing abathur.
But I assume there are advantages to playing unlocked as I’ve seen many players do it

Unlocked, it allows me to have a better overview.
I heard locked camera is a thing with illusion master samuro, otherwise I’d never recommend it. Locked limits you so hard unless you constantly navigate the map but that probably takes more apm than unlocked.
Abathur and TLV is unplayable (personally) without Unlocked. I prefer Samuro with Unlocked only but that’s just a preference, not something everyone does.
I play Tracer with Locked camera and never noticed it affecting my performance negatively, quite the opposite it allowed me to keep track of her movements in hectic teamfights.
And if I need to pan the camera I constantly do that with the minimap anyway.
I also don’t like Genji with Unlocked and having to constantly hit space bar. If I need to pan the camera I click on the minimap achieving the exact same thing.
My theory is people are afraid of being called “noobs” by using locked camera, therefore few will admit to it. I have no problem admitting it betters my performance on high mobility heroes. Or, people don’t know you can constantly move the camera around even with Locked Cam, by clicking on the minimap.
I play with unlocked camera but i heard some people play samuro and tracer with it.
I play with locked camera with every single hero possible and I don’t see any disadvantages in those 3 years of playing despite what everyone keep saying.
Unlocked. tho at first i used to the locked camera. but the Unlocked one is better. it allows you to have a better perspective and you don’t have to go to the area you want to view if you want to see there.
That’s a common misconception. Moving the mouse to the edge of the screen is not the only way to pan the camera around. Clicking the mini-map does the exact same thing, even faster (for example you can instantly change to the other side of the map and check what’s happening).
I think this is a big reason why people opposed locked camera, they are simply unaware of this.
unlocked, feels weird having the camera locked.
Unlocked. I check lanes very often. Minimap only says how many but doesnt provide info about health and what units
I use locked camera only for Gall and Tracer, but I don’t play TLV, Samuro or Genji and it seems like it’s good enough also for those.
You can also see health, units, everything by clicking minimap to pan the camera there.
I’m still not sure if people are completely missing this or if they never tried it before.
Moving camera by clicking various minimap locations works exactly like moving camera by moving the mouse to the edge of the screen works. It’s just faster.
For example you are top laning on Cursed Hollow in locked camera mode and want to see what is happening on bot lane. You click the bot lane on minimap and you instantly see what is happening there.
Unlocked.
I tried playing on Locked Camera but it feels weird. I did try it on heroes like Tracer, Lunara, Valla, BWing but didn’t last long because it was hurting my eyes.
Play with locked camera as that’s how i play my games.
Could never imagine playing with a locked camera. The camera needs to go where my hand tells it to go, otherwise it gets confusing for me.
It’s advantagegous to bind that key to something you can hit in comebat so you can unlock it whenever you need to and lock it when you’re gonna profit from locking it. Having one of the two permanent seems like giving yourself a handicap compared to people that constantly switch and know how to.
I know for a fact that’s what pro players do though they usually have it unlocked. I have camera usually locked and I unlock it when I am doing camps or sth or in a teamfight to get better overview or on the lane or sth.
I got to master league without ever unlocking last year tho ;D so I guess do what you want.
Locked cam here.
It’s just more comfortable for me.
Rarely any moments when I don’t want to see my Hero and in those situation I can use the “click the minimap trick”.
There are, but I would say they are minor overall.
The largest problem problem is that the camera, when your hero is in the frame, aims to have you at the center.
You can indeed use the minimal to check others when camera is locked.
But the issue is more that it constantly (if you’re not moving camera directly) attempts to center the camera on your hero.
Which is a very situational problem. And not nearly as big as I note overall. As the difference is minor. If your winrate was 49.9 or something, I suspect over hundreds of games it might give you a .1% boost.
I play with unlocked camera. Sometimes, I’m being chased and I want to keep an eye on where that chromie or ming is aiming so I avoid their shots rather than juking into their shots.
There are many more benefits but I feel like my field of view is limited when I’m locked in.
i play locked. i have been doing it that way since closed tech alpha though.
soo… ya it s not like i dont know how to handle camera movement where i need to.
also you are completely right about aba and tlv. i unlock the camera for them. only way to really play them effectively really.
