How many stacks of Protector Of Aiur would you need to do as much damage as Amateur Opponent when fighting non heroes?
42
The answer to life, the universe and everything
TL;DR: 600 stacks/60% bonus damage baseline, 500 stacks/50% bonus damage if you go Triple Strike on both. 500 stacks/50% with Blades of a Templar without Triple Strike, and 412/413 stacks/41.25% with Blades of a Templar and Triple Strike.
Amateur Opponent: every 4 seconds, do a total of 800% damage of your baseline attacks (3 regular attacks (100%), 2 bonus attacks (500%).
Protector of aiur, baseline: 500% damage in that time. 100% for 3 normal, 200% for twin strike. 300/5 = 60.
With Triple strike it becomes 7 attacks in 5 seconds, for 1050% Amateur, and 700% Protector. So if you were going Triple Strike, you would only need 50% bonus damage, or 500 stacks. as 350/7 = 50.
This changes even more if you go Blades of a Templar… Which if you really care I might consider factoring into both of these. But it is just going to make the % lower.
actually, that one is pretty easy… you get an extra attack in both times…
so it should be:
300/6 = 50% without triple strike and with Blades of a Templar.
And 350/8 = 41.25 with triple strike and blades of a templar.
So I guess we could arbitrarly decide to round up, and call 41.25 =…
So basicly past lvl 22 in the game
The real question is, if you’re in a match going for PVE but want damage, are you really willing to wait that long to be just on par with amateur opponent?
Unless you are against stack generators like Chen or Leoric.
If they stack the other person super high you have the right to flame them
I think it really is a question of much PvE you want to give up for how long.
Say you’re a map with bosses, where lategame you want to solo them.
Knowing that later game you could possible get close to the value that Amateur Opponent gives you is valuable.
on Alterac Pass, a lategame boss solo is good, but why bother taking Amateur opponent when Protector of Aiur will basically give you the same result, but help your teamfighting through the whole game.
Basically, the knowledge of “how many stacks you need” to be equally strong is a good thing to know, as it can help you make more informed decisions with your talent choices early.
Although Amateur Opponent is most well known for boss racing or soloing, it should be noted that AO is one of the few talents that works on structures. This can make even weak objectives more valuable, and when paired with a hero like Sylvanas, can wreak havoc on a lane if the enemy team doesn’t respond quickly. Protector of Aiur is a lot of fun if you have the right comp to exploit it, or in ARAM, but even if it stacked more quickly, I would still have a hard time giving up Amateur Opponent in the vast majority of situations.
