I am sick that our only “tank” picks Twin Blades into Arthas and screws the whole team over. Not only don’t we have a tank then but those people literally pick AA when they are already countered.

How picking role will change anything if you will still be able to pick Twins?
If you pick taunt qm will queue you with 3 tanks anyway
Same with twin blades maybe you will face hanzo + ming where coloss shines better

This. Your tank qued as Tank but still goes Colossus. Now what?
Only way it would ever work is if it completely greys out his other level 4’s.
It makes no sense, because Varian can change his role only ingame… so if you have “3 tanks anyway”, you can get CS still.
Or just take Varian as a multiclass out of the QM parameters, even though it might be unfair when the enemys have no tank and varian skills tank, but you can’t solve this problem, because he’s a multiclass.
That’s why it is the best solution as it is now, but it’s just bad luck when your potato varian picks twin or cs, when your team clearly need a tank. 
I think he means that you’d pick before the game. It it would automatically put you into that choice when you reach Lvl 4.
Which wouldn’t be a bad idea. As Varian players rarely get games where they can go TB because there will always be a tank/bruiser on the other team.
How Varians rarely can go TB, when there always be a tank/bruiser on the enemy team? Twin is a bruiser… or was it irony and I failed to see it?
It’s mostly for the Tank. But the few times I played Varian I was against both and our team had no tank.

Because if you pick twin blades, the game wouldn’t mark that down as having a tank, and it wouldn’t queue you against a team with a tank.
Outside of extremely high skilled play (not most people) this makes little difference to the game result. Strange comps win all the time in SL.

You do realize that Varian is still a bruiser even if he goes with shield, so his role doesn’t really change no matter what type of swords he picks. Even taunt Varian doesn’t really have the cc/peel to be a solo tank.

Unfortunately that would be too complex for the current hots staff. Anything beyond changing stats requires skills this team doesn’t have.
He has his R to basically focus down almost everyone, he’s tanky like a tank and yeah his “peel” is only Q, but it can do some nasty dmg, he is not bad as a tank, but sure there are better tanks out there. Nevertheless taunt varian is still tank.
Varian was introduced as a multiclass and he still is.
They have more skill than you though.

This can be manipulated easy to be a tank in a non tank comp unless they lock the ults.

No. Kinda ruins what makes varian kinda special. If your team mate picks the wrong class well that’s on them not on the character design
