Brief Thrall Guide

Thrall got some love and jumped from a niche pick to just a generally good hero. He is a skill matchup against most duelers and can double soak in a pinch. As a general rule his effectiveness is based on his ult in teamfights. This means you should be staying with your team when you have it, and soaking when you do not have it. Before 16 I tend to soak, join 4 man for a gank/objective with my ult, and then go back to soaking. He plays a bit like a dive hero at times because you want to sunder backline, throw a w, and then smack them with your abilities and once cooldowns are done you either finish off kill with a q or run back to your team. Your q can be used to poke backline and in lower ranks their tank will let you smack them with autoattacks. Thrall with his 1/7 melts tanks so don’t be afraid to use your combo on them if your team has poked them enough. otherwise just stick to auto attacking ktanks and saving abilities for a backline that gets out of position.

Talent Build:
1- Rolling Thunder- Generally the better talent as it helps you win solo lane and put pressure on tanks. Quest is also good but if you’re just starting thrall stick to rolling thunder.
4- Mana Tide-mustpick
7- Ancestral Wrath- unfortunately also a mustpick
10- Sundering: Fun Fact Earthquake is better most of the time, but if you’re starting out on thrall sundering is easier to use and can help you burst down backline. Switch once you feel comfortable with the basics. His eq ability at 20 is a power spike almost equivalent to Nazeebo’s trait.
13- Frostwolf’s Grace- MUSTPICK
16- Thunderstorm- Don’t stress about the quest too much. losing it is fine
20- Windrush- EQ upgrade is the best talent in the game for thrall, but windrush is what you pick if you went sundering. Only grab nexus blades if you hit 20 while going for core.

For people bad at managing it, is it better to go Malstrom Weapon?

I usually pick Alpha wolf when I’m on Braxis. What do you think?

Maelstrom is okay if you’re getting the stacks, but ancestral helps thrall win duels he’d otherwise lose. It also gives him important sustain and % damage.

Alpha wolf is different because its actually a good talent and competes with less important talents. I would pick it more into an azmodan than on any particular map. You do better diving backline with thrall than focusing tanks. Though alpha wolf lets you do that too. If you’re going alpha wolf the w quest at 4 is also not a bad pick. You’ll probably find thrall to be more useful in teamfights with q build. The slow also helps lock down enemies better than the longer root duration.
