This character honestly has too much lane game impact for never actually being in harms way, really just doesnt feel like it has a place in the game as far as how many characters that are normal balanced and turned into invincible game changers with just a click over the character
Abathur is the cutest video game character I have ever seen
Its pretty strange as far as character design in mobas goes but killing everything is not how you win games in the end.
Besides, it makes those few abby kills you do get feel gooooooood.
according to hots logs aba is played more only second to valla, just not really sure why everyone wants to continue to play clearly broken characters for empty victories and enhancing the toxic QM enviornment
He isn’t really broken, he is just very annoying.
Although a combination of Aba+certain heroes is borderline broken, though, if they are playing with a focus on that.
Sometimes you face an aba+illidan team, but the Aba is playing locust splitpush build and doesn’t care about the illidan.
I think you may be focusing a bit to hard on the stats screen with out considering what these numbers really mean in the context of a hots match.
The only way for Abathur to have maximum impact is for him to body soak and use mines as often as possible. Body soaking puts him in obvious danger and the range of his mines means he as to at least be near forts in-lane so he can use them effectively. If you’re playing against an Abathur who barely uses mines and doesn’t body soak, you’re at an automatic laning advantage.
This doesn’t even make sense as an argument as you could apply it to almost any character that is even remotely different from the “average hero”. Medivh can become an invincible, untargetable bird. Deathwing is permanently unstoppable. Cho’gall requires 2 people to play. Lost Vikings is 3 heroes in one. Murky functions both as a full hero and “not a full hero” at once due to his low health but deceptive damage and ability to easily take camps. Ragnaros can use friendly keeps/forts and any destroyed fort/keep to become a GIANT with a different moveset. There are so many characters with buck the trend of the “average hero” that singling out Abathur has some kind of unique mistake or outlier makes no sense.
If you think Abathur auto-wins games because of his hat, I have a bridge to sell you.
Looking at QM stats, especially QM stats across all skill levels, tells you basically no useful information at all. You’re just gonna find data that fits your bias after constantly searching and conclude that you are correct. Abathur in Master+ games over the past few patches is sitting at under 20% popularity. The best players in the game don’t even use him all that much which means your perceptions of his strength aren’t as realistic as you think they are.
“Laughs in Zeratul”
No, i have no idea what your talking about.
i love playing abathur, i believe aba is one of the most if not the most versatile hero in the game.
I usually go hat build with good strong melee AA heroes, if big map with roaming potential i go bombs, and if just sometimes i go monstrocity on big maps
Imo there are changes that can be implemented to make aba a higher risk- higher reward hero. Maybe a minion buff the closer aba is to minions. Maybe a speed boost. I’m not an aba expert but I do agree partially that aba isnt as hard as medivh or TLV.
And the funny thing is that people want core replacement heroes added to the game which would have even less chance of being killed (since the game would end if they ever die.)
Honestly, I think they could do a lot more with abathur, even if he never died he just never was that fun imo, his concept was cool and well executed, but i still think it coulda been better.
Didn’t it used to be necessary for him to be in/near lane in order to collect XP? Not sure when they started letting the hat do it.
But at the same time it would be a nightmare to try and change how he works. Make him too risky and nobody will play him because they’ll just pick support heroes with more health and physical presence. They’d have to buff him elsewhere to compensate, and then we’ll end up with the “he does too much” problem all over again.
no hat was always able to soak as far as i remember.
what ur talking about is double soaking, one lane with his body in bush and one with hat back in the days where those sh*tty xp-globes werent a thing
xp globes and the changes they brought were already a hardnerf for aba (cant soak from bush, super reduced soak range)
edit: actually xp-globes and their changes which increased abas risk when soaking are in my opinion one of the mainreasons why ppl play more defensively with him since it s just not worth it
in my opinion the TO is just jealous because a careful aba has it easier to get on mvp screen (since death reduce the “points” which will decide if u appear or not), which has 0 impact on actual gameplay and is just there to fulfill the vanity of ppl
He is only strong if your team is weak to shut his team down.
But yea he is annoying. But autowin he never was.
But again Qm is Qm. It will always have unbalanced games no matter what and most of your games are stomps or you getting stomped. You need to be lucky to get a balanced game in qm today.
If you end up in a 5vs dps game where enemy team got Aba then ofc he will make your life a hell cause he always ends up with 1-2 strong hat targets.
And good luck for the Medivh players out there trying to find him while he kills your team and waste your time.
Before exp globes I would see Aba players all over the map
After globes changes. Hides behind his keep or in spawn whole game and rarely place mines on the map lol.
Sometimes when I watch replay of my lost games againts Abas I facepalm when I see he just hides in spawn or in base when he got a whole lane for himself. But ofc the Aba player is a chicken and are affraid to expose themself on enemy side of the map.
Just hide in base or in spawn has become the new tactic of most Aba players.
There is nothing skilled by hiding in base or in spawn whole game and then gets to win after doing nothing.
He needs to gets forced out in the field again like before. Not like now where he is jsut a cowardly base hider that never shows his face in a lane.
Its unfair when QM doesnt feature a healer
Look i’m an aba main, this opinion is entirely unbiased towards the OP, but dude the only aba players you’ll meet that stay in the base the entire game are bad abathurs. First off, yeah he can get exp, but if you’re faced against other siegers you have to be as close to the enemy structures as possible to maximize both the exp you acquire as well as the usage of your locust. Locust as a base sucks, its really just an extra minion. Even with the buffs its still not really that great(unless its left alone). I probably average one death a game with aba when i’m doing poorly, but i’m always out in the front lines. I’m always as close as i can be and when someone is about to get up on me i’m gone long before they ever get there. I stay in bushes and trick dps into running face first into my mines and then i do the worm over their corpse, but it doesn’t always work the way i expect. Sometime people get crafty and will go around the entire map on which hunts to chase me down and kill me. Any smart abathur knows that they need to be close to front lines when possible because otherwise the locust is just a wasted ability. Instead of chasing the abathur down and getting mad you can’t kill him counter by killing his teammates or getting camps. Or better yet destroy the lane he occupies because he can’t solo on lanes
killing his teammates is most of the problem. Way too many tanks ,bruisers ,and assassins become over the top when just a hat is added
That’s not true, there are only really 8 characters that become “over-the-top” when hatted and even then they can still be killed. Abathur’s weakness is he’s very weak early game and he gets massive power scaling with a medium buff at 13 and two strong buffs at 16. If your team gets the start game advantage the other team is put at a deficit. If they fight whilst outnumbered early game they give you the opportunity to secure a win right there. Abathur is mostly balanced, but he has a lot of weaknesses he has difficulty overcoming. It took me over 200 games with him to get comfortable walking out in the open with him simply because you have to play smart. There’s so many counters to each of his builds and his/her knowledge of that will not always secure him/her a win. For example all pierce type abilities and multi hitting abilities can hit mines, considering over half the roster has one on of these, mines are rather ineffective other than for dismounting and for kills they are a one trick pony. Locust build can be easily countered by burst dmg which at least a third of the roster has access to. Additionally the locust despawn which means you only need to stall them not kill them. Essentially what i’m trying to say is with abathur he’s a trade character. For the first half of the match the opposing team has the chance for an easy win and the advantage, but if they cannot secure the lead in the first half they become at an increasing disadvantage in the second half. Even so, playing abathur may be “safe”, but it still requires easily 3-4 times the amount of work to achieve the same result as any other sieger or DPS. You have to be map aware constantly to avoid your team losing EXP from deaths. You have to manage your lanes and slow their rotations all because they have the advantage. You have to work your butt off to counteract the fact you put your team at a disadvantage, and the fact there are only 3 objectives he can actually contest.
Playing abathur puts extra stress on other people, and something you don’t consider is that if even ONE person on abathur’s team dies the utility he has massively drops. If an objective is pushing he can do something to stall it, but typically he cannot stop it. He has the dmg to make up for a lack of a teammate, but not the physical body to soak it.
