A forogottne thread

I have a love hate relationship with the medallion. It’s impact is hardly noticeable in the majority of games.

It’s a great addition to the game in the form of:

  • promoting riskier and more rewarding playmaking potential that would not have payed off in long term
    • medallion before using an ability with a mandatory cast time
    • escaping ganks that you would have died from without the medallion
    • diving in enemy backline without immediately becoming dead meat
  • correctly predicting unpredictable incoming crowd control
  • further increasing the skill ceiling of the game to better differentiate between a bad player and a good player
  • baiting out enemy medallions
    • for example: jump towards an enemy as Muradin while your team is behind you > enemy uses medallion in hopes of correctly predicting your incoming stormbolt > you correctly baited out the medallion > immediately land stormbolt to confirm kill

It’s a bad addition to the game in the form of:

  • remembering you have an extra button to press
  • being binded to slot 6 by default
    • easily fixable though
  • some heroes are going to be way tougher to play and get value out of
    • tanks in particular even though they are one of the least played roles
  • attempting to achieve that extremely satisfying clutch medallion right as you are about to die, but still end up dying, wasting a 5 minute cooldown
    • you don’t realize how often this happens in quick match lol
  • the developers now having to take into account medallion when making balance changes

So far, I lean more towards being for medallion for the sake of most games that will never be decided based off one person’s perfect use of medallion. I always imagine situations where something else happens instead of reality, like what if someone uses medallion to correctly predict cc than someone who doesn’t bother to use medallion? Alternate universes people!
