Ok so i have a highlander hunter that i play often and it has always triggered the battlecry since i have no duplicates in my deck.
I just played against a control warrior and i was losing but played Zephyrs the Great out of desperation that i may get something useful but i didn’t get any cards from him. Is this a bug?
Only reason i can think of is that the cards counted the multiple bombs in my deck as the same cards? Also i discovered a secret i already had in my deck so i guess i have 2 of those but my deck didn’t start with 2, i thought the Zyphyrs the Great only checked if your deck started out with no duplicates?
I swear in the past i have discovered the same secret that was in my deck and Zephyrs still worked…
That’s the most possible reason.
Many created cards can end up as duplicates. I suppose that you, or your opponent generated some duplicates in your deck.

Bombs count as duplicates

Yes. Multiple bombs in your deck will turn off Zephrys’ effect.
Doesn’t matter. As long as you don’t have duplicates in your deck. You can have a hand full of copies of the same card and it wouldn’t matter. Trump even used to run two copies of Hyena Alphas due to how strong card that is and try to draw one of them before playing Zephrys.
Nope. He doesn’t. He looks at your deck the moment you play him. If there’s no duplicates when you play him his Battlecry triggers.
So its constantly checking for duplicates, not just at the beginning of the game?

Yup. He is not like Genn Greymane or Baku the Mooneater with Start of the Game-effect. The card text would tell you if it did have.

Thanks! So he only checks the deck and not the hand? That’s useful info! That would explain why the duplicate secret i discovered still allowed Zephyrs to trigger but the bombs didn’t.
So basically highlander decks are almost an auto concede vs bombs eh? I mean maybe not because iv beat a few of them before they get 2 bombs in my deck but that was frustrating getting pounded by the warrior only for my one trump card to be nullified lol.
Correct. Only your deck, as the card text says. Doesn’t matter what’s in your hand.
Well, Highlander Hunter anyway is slightly unfavored against Bomb Warrior but not by a whole lot. Winning is still possible. Plus you can play Tracking to try to get rid of the bombs. It’s not much but it’s something.
Besides Hunter got such strong ‘standalone’ class cards that you can win even without Zephrys or Brann, usually.

They count as duplicates and spells so they stop highlander effects and can be drawn via say, Tortollan Pilgrim.
Bat sh*t broken? counter intuitive? you bet.
Yep , thats why highlander should always check at start of the game .
Would also prevent people from running highlander cards in normal decks to use late-game .
Guess ill have to start counting the bombs when I play a bomb warrior, both when they go in the deck and when they explode. Or just use the card early vs warrior so they don’t have the chance to cancel the effect.
I haven’t used a deck tracker in a long while, wonder if they would tell you how many bombs are in deck? Might start using them again when i play highlander because i’m lazy at tracking cards sometimes…
Hearthstone Deck Tracker does, at least.
Correct, indeed some Zephrys decklists include a small number of duplicates and trust in the fact that they’ll manage to draw them before playing Zephrys.
Why is that good?
Building a deck understanding how many duplicates you plan on running is not something to be discouraged.
It feels great playing bomb warrior with all the highlander decks around.
It’s always fun seeing your opponent hovering over Zephrys, cause he’s not triggering with all the bombs in their deck.
3 sec. later they concede.

People rely too much on this card.
Zephrys, like all highlander cards, will have a yellow border instead of the normal green border in hand, if the singleton condition is met.
How is it counter intuitive? Just because you don’t like it does not make it counter intuitive.
