Yesterday, B/A announced the next WoW Expansion “Dragonflight”:
https://worldofwarcraft.com/en-gb/
Onyxia’s Lair already brought some new Dragons, so with Dragonflight on the horizon (late Summer to Fall 2022, I guess), will we see a more or less triumphant return of several Dragon archetype decks? A number of Dragon related skins & cosmetics seem likely, too.
Thoughts?
P.S. Take that with a metric ton of salt, but WoW Classic announced it’s WotLK expansion, too.

Ah WoW, let this old man ramble and reminiscent on the nostalgia…
I’m not much of a multiplayer guy. It’s not that I don’t engage it at all (I obviously play HS with some PvP) but between a MMORPG or a more classic single player experience, given all else equal I’d go for the latter.
But a couple of my friends played so I went ahead and joined in, sometime after Dire Maul was released in classic. I ended up outlasting them in the game. I lasted for quite a while - up to beginning of Cata - because even when I’m soloing/partying with random people there was still a lot to do, but eventually I stopped too.
One reason I stuck for so long is I do care for the story (one big reason for me to play RPGs at all is the story), and I did play pretty much all the Warcraft RTS so I knew most of the lore up to that point. Problem for me though is of course it’s kinda rough to pay a subscription while doing all the grinding that comes with an MMO, just to keep up with the story.
The time thing is important. While it’s possible for me to still spend all my time in WoW or some other grindfest game, I want to play other things too. One thing HS and other made-for-mobile games have going for them is that they could be played with minimal time investment.
But I still do miss being able to keep up with the ongoing story and development of the world of Azeroth and its inhabitants. So with that said, to help anyone else who like to get an update, here’s a reddit post I found that summarizes Shadowlands
reddit dot com/r/wow/comments/u71dp8/short_summary_of_shadowlands_before_the_100_reveal/
… ok enough rambling for now. If it comes to HS… I’m not sure what Bliz’s plans are. It’s possible they could have their two games really collaborate with characters/creatures/lore cross referencing (New expansion characters/creatures show up in HS? Murloc paladins?), or just do token cosmetic stuff (“play HS and get this mount in WoW!” “play WoW and get this card back in HS!”)
I suspect the latter as cross promoting both games is probably more profitable instead of allowing players to enjoy a bit of both worlds without actually playing (paying) for both.
From what I’ve heard and seen, the story has become ridiculous. I don’t think you, as someone that’s lore savvy, would appreciate where they’ve gone with the storyline.
As for the OP, I don’t believe this will have any impact on Hearthstone.
Shadowlands is ridiculous, I’ll give you that.
Dragonflight seems(!) to be a more back to roots approach, so I’ll put back my verdict until it’s been out. Currently without subscription, I’ll prolly get back for the transitional prepatch and play for a month. Afterwards, who knows - I’ve been playing WoW pretty much as First123 described it.
P.S. They’ll add a new exclusive class/race combo, a humanoid Dracthyr (two forms hybrid) playing the Evoker class - a let’s say “Dragon Magic” range DPS or Healing class. Food for more HS class speculation.
From the reddit comments I linked, I can see it. If you summarize the story like the post did, WoW’s story is passable if it was like a short TV season (~12-13 episodes, over like 4 months), but WoW expansion go on for like a year or two.
And I don’t know if it’s changed since, but in between major story releases, you pretty much have nothing to do but grind grind grind. And there were so many things to grind.
On one hand you can make the argument this makes WoW worth the money. I mean, compared to just this game, how much content (e.g packs) can a few months of WoW subscription get you?
On the other hand, so much content means it’s so easy to have WoW suck up all the time you have. They offered a few “free WoW this weekend” kinda thing. Yeah, by the time I installed the game and patched it up, half the weekend’s gone!
Ok ok end of old man rambling round 2.
That’s one reason FFXIV is preferred to WoW (there are others reasons , obviously). There is so much to do. In my experience, and in the experiences related to me, it is actually difficult to run out of stuff to do. Unlike WoW, wherein you oftentimes find yourself in a situation where you have WoW open and are logged in sitting at a bank or some such, not knowing what to do. Probably tabbed out on YouTube half the time.
Edit: I should add that the main storyline in FFXIV is simply better than WoW’s.
This has nothing to do with Hearthstone, nice excuse to post this.

But it pretty much has, in the Dragon deck sense. I’d like to see Outland’s Dragon Hunter deck to reemerge in some way.
Nostalgic WoW references and the like led me to a deviation, I’ll give you that.
I’m hopeful that Onyxia’s Lair was like a little taste of things to come - back when I joined, mech mage was a thing, and, shortly thereafter, dragon priest came about - and it does look promising that dragon-themed decks are on the horizon!
I’m always down for more dragon stuff. Definitely one of my fav archetypes throughout hearthstone’s history.
Cataclysm 2: Electric Boogaloo
Kinda sad they’re so desperate they’re going back to one of their worst expansions lol.
i really hope that when Microsoft takes over, they clean house.
all it does is provide new ideas and art for cards
Like every expansion, I’ll come back to see if it “feels” good to play
Shadowlands just wasn’t doing the trick for me- it was the first expansion I didn’t even manage to hit max level on before becoming bored and quitting. Doesn’t mean this one will be the same!
No stress whatsoever. I’ll give it a shot when it’s out, either I’ll enjoy it or I won’t lol
I don’t really expect it to impact Hearthstone in any meaningful way, except that the art team will have another expansion’s worth of cosmetics to work with, which will certainly be cool. I’m sure we’ll get the occasional sprinkling of new dragons as we always have though
so far they haven´t done anything related to current wow with hearthstone, i believe this expansion is basically the first leaving classic wow, and it´s naz´jatar so still not even the current addon.
wouldnßt be surprised to see more dragons if player number plummet this year as they certainly are a fan favourite.
