I couldn’t find an ‘off-topic’ forum so I hope it is ok.
I’m 16 and so haven’t been around long but I have heard about World of Warcraft and HS is based on it. My question, the game is so old is it worth trying to get into? If not (or even if so) what would be an alternative?
I downloaded it this weekend and played for a bit… 1st time ever.
Quite fun… It will take an age to catch up on all the lore… But seems to me like it can still provide lots of entertainment
Back in the day (20 years ago) I’d have thought WOW was just for nerds. I was wrong.
Played WoW since cata and unsubbed after a couple months of the most recent expansion, Battle for Azeroth. There’s quite a lot of lore to catch up on if that’s what you’re interested in. WoW is largely a social game. If you enjoy playing with other players and making friendships with your guildmates, it might be for you.
In the MMO market, I’d say it’s definitely still the titan of them all, but there are a lot of other great MMO’s out there (i.e. Guild Wars 2, Neverwinter, etc) that aren’t subscription based (which I know turns off a lot of people).
The game is a lot more new player friendly now though as there’s level boosts which help you get into endgame content a lot quicker. Being max level/endgame is pretty much the core of the game during any given expansion. There’s tons of things to do in the game and you can’t really “complete” it unless you spend thousands of hours doing so.
Personally, I would love to be a new WoW player again and re-experience many of my fondest memories, but the game has changed way to much for a player like me who’s played since almost a decade ago. But you might as well try it out and see if you like it, as the game is free to play until your character hits level 20.
Also if you’re specifically just interested in the lore, nobbel87 on youtube has tons of Warcraft lore videos that even I watch/listen to sometimes as Warcraft lore is HUGE and to read up 100% on it takes a pretty long time. You could also obtain the earlier warcraft RTS games which started the whole Warcraft franchise.
If you enjoy Hearthstone definitely give it a try! Also, if you ever want to make gold in game go to Hazelnutty games and look up tradeskill master. I am on a break right now But I bought the new expansion with in game gold AND… if you are taking it slow but are good at making gold you can use wow gold for hearthstone.
I bought my hearthstone welcome pack with wow gold. But my advice is subscribe for a month. Make a panda if you like pandas. Otherwise there are a lot of fascinating classes to try and even though I came to Hearthstone from Wow I had too hearthstone moments in game that gave me a huge grin. a few months ago I was in a BFA area called Freehold and was attacked by a knife juggler. Identical to his picture and everything!
And I was in Northrend and saw King Krush. Of course there are more obvious things like the Bloodhoofs and Jaina but so many cards are in game monsters and beasts.
I was questing in Theramore for free weekend and had to fight off a bunch of oozes. Just all sorts of little things like that that make the whole thing more fun.
If you wan to get addicted and play it every day of the week then it’s something to look into. Because in the early days when I was young I tried to play as much as possible to learn everything. But it sounds worse for a young player like you then it actually is. So it’s not that bad. I know it so addictive but then later you will realise that it’s only for fun. It’s like going to the cinemas well of course only that you dedicated your whole life for the game. It’s not you usual Battlefield 3. It’s like Battlefield but a whole world to explore so you got to learn professions and keep playing it’s never ending. But yea it’s quite easy now for me since I’ve been playing for a long time. I only picked it up because my class mates were talking about it. So you are in similar situation you either walk away thinking it’s like alcohol addiction or you give it a try and it will be such a wonderful experience that you will never forget. You get to grasp what other worlds offer and they can be life save in tragic situations to get away from reality of things. Sometimes that’s all you need in business is that other perspective the rest is history. But suby can be costly not so much expansions they are just once off per few years but suby is fun paying it but can make you money stretch.
Still thinking about it. Your replies make me think I will give it a try.
you can play on trial account for free up to lev 20. I would take a look- nothing to lose here.
I’ve been playing Blizzard games since the time of the dinosaurs. So that includes plenty of time with both World of Warcraft and Warcraft 3 (will be relevant in a moment).
So one thing that would be important to answering your questions would be what kind of games do you like? Because WoW is strictly an MMO. And that is not only a different genre of game then a TCG, but the time requirements are different. You can’t just log in a for a few hearthstone games here and there, it takes a lot of time to learn the game and there is vast content to go through at this point.
WoW was a great experience to have if you got it when it was new, then were there for it’s golden years, and have at least returned briefly every now and then to stay in the loop. Hopping in now won’t exactly be the same experience. Some of the events, guilds, and friends made can’t really be replicated. There’s just not the people in the zones, quest, or (old) dungeons. That being said, if you’re interested I think you can play free up until level 20 or something to check out the basic starting areas- maybe you’ll like it. The issue for you is there is now literally 13 years of content and laying out for you a pathway from vanilla to Battle For Azeroth would be difficult to plan, and take months of endless play to accomplish. Lots of new players “boost” (automatically skip past) or manually powerlevel through most of them old base content and expac stuff, and really only get to now the most recent expac content they’ve bought. They are now opening up a Classic “Vanilla” server soon that could be a good place to start at the base level 0-60 experience.
TBH I would absolutely recommend you first play Warcraft 3, and it’s expansion the Frozen Throne. It was an incredibly fun RTS game that came out a little before WoW (and colossus WoW sucked the life out of the rest of the rts series). It will teach the lore firsthand that lays down the foundations for all of the story in WoW, which proceeded after this game. They are making a remastered version of the game now that should be on sale later this year. I’d definitely check that out for sure.
So I can’t really say for sure if WoW is for you. It’s a different type of game, different type of time sink, there’s tons of content to go through and so on. But I would heartily recommend Warcraft 3 to anyone, that remaster coming this year looks amazing.

No. world of warcraft is not a good game. you might think it is when you are level 1 or 10 or 80. but once you are max level you find out it is not an mmorpg. it is more like a cellphone game these days.
I’m not a fan of classic wow either but it is way better than current expansion. my perfect wow experience was during bc and wotlk. 10 years ago.
No you are right, you are one of the nerds now
My WoW experience wasn’t very positive. Every guild I joined fell apart.
I was constantly mocked because my class choice. (Hunter)
If the team wiped (Priest alt) it was always my fault.
I enjoyed running around by myself exploring the areas, learning my professions, and farming materials. I wasn’t into PVP all that much.
In fact, I remember one dungeon where they started the boss fight…without me. I had to feign death the whole time while my party fought the boss. And they were laughing about it the whole time.
It would have been fun if I could have been left alone to do my own thing.
As a Hunter, it would sometimes take an hour or two to get into a dungeon so I finally get in one just to be mocked the whole time.
I’m paying money to be mocked. So I quit, got rid of my PC and never looked back. I have Neverwinter on my console whenever I feel like I need a “Wow” fix.
