Why do I suck at Battlegrounds so much?

I’ve been playing and gone above 6k in points, about 6400 or so, lost 400 after some BS, because people just spike for no reason and every hero is garbage in my hands it seems like. And yes, this is also a vent, cause I’ve been losing for three days straight.

Imho the hero selection isnt nearly as important as the decisions you make during the game. Better strategic decisions will yield more top half finishes, unless your playing duos.

can relate. stuck at 5k here

I recommend watching some of Jeef’s learning vids on YouTube. They really helped me learn some basics. He also has one with advice for each anomaly this season that I found really useful.

If you want to get above 7k you’ll need to get a little push and learn from stuff out there. Unless you’re a genius, you likely won’t learn enough by just practicing without any extra guidance. You won’t know what mistakes you’re making unless you see better players play.

Perfect practice makes perfect.

It takes time and lots of practice to move beyond 6K comfortably. It’s not something one does right out of the gate. BG’s has many moving parts and interactions you need to learn and understand.

At the very least have one of the 2 addon overlays running so you can see %'s and have quick access to all the cards and cookie cutter builds in specific lobbies. That’s a great help to new players.

It’s unclear if it’s your skill only. All formats of this game depend on time played too. Eg I’m about 6.5K right now but I might had been more if I didn’t play too casually (I mainly care to minmax f2p constructed standard).

Basically how many matches do you play per day? The answer might be different if you play 25 compared to playing 5: if you play 5 the skill might be high but if you play 25 you might need more experience etc.

It’s a huuuuge advantage if you purchase the tavern pass. If you don’t buy it, I would suggest not worrying about your rating and just concede if you don’t like the combination of anomaly / hero choices. It kind of feels bad, but it’s a huge investment of your time to play through a game, and you get used to it.

It’s an extremely luck dictated format, so get used to losing at times. I play around 7k range. I can get 1st place 3 times in a row, then get 8th place 2 times after. All you can do is try to see/know all the possibilities when they are presented. Don’t waste your time focusing on mid lev stuff. The first 3 tiers are junk for most tribes, so just try to get the strongest warband you can at the start and try to tier up. But, ultimately luck will determine if you can win or not. Every warband needs certain minions to excel and if you don’t get them… you can’t win. This season has added even more randomness to the format so it is even more luck dictated than usual. Try to figure out the niche that will allow you to tier up quickest and hope to pull the good stuff. That’s all you can do.

I recently started a free account on the Chinese server because i wanted to see just how good they are. Hint: they are really good BG players. So i only get the 2 choices and i would say it effects about 20% of my games. At first it was how the Chinese players played but i got into their groove and removed that mostly. I can’t say some games i got absolutely horrible choices but most of the time i can get a solid build with the 2 choices i get.

So yes it will effect you somewhat but overall a good BG player can still climb without the pass.

its just greedy af that they make the battle pass cost money. I have 105k old saved and nothing to use it on since i pretty much only play BG.

The game was always meant to be p2w. I found the presentations of 2013 for the upcoming Hearthstone first release and they were literally announcing “it’s meant to be microtransactions-based” (I guess it was important back then to talk to the shareholders so the pretense and propaganda was low).

I personally don’t care much because I find it a minigame to collect dust efficiently, though I agree I wouldn’t like it if I took BGs seriously for ranking because the stats often show the best heroes more than 20% better than the worst ones and a f2p player can often have only the worst heroes on offer.

If you do figure this out, please share it with the rest of us. I too am terrible at battlegrounds mode.

Do you really not see a difference between ‘Hearthstone will be pay to win’ and ‘Hearthstone will be microtransactions-based’?

No, because even just having a bigger collection is a win rate advantage indirectly. I can extrapolate that their microtransactions would not be limited to aesthetics.

PS Yes I’d like microtransactions to be aesthetics-based only and I’m advocating for that every chance I get, but I play Blizzard games since 2004 (I know them).

The shop tends to get super stingy around 4k, ramping into thrift shop around 5k, into something that looks like the dumpster behind a CD Warehouse after 6k. Call it what you want, people buying or playing the same minions that you want/need, or just tighter RNG, idk. I can pull off disgusting wins on smurf accounts that have 0 rating that I would never even get close to at 6500.
