Why can't we have more than 30 cards?

Now that we have overcapped decks, why can’t we just play them? Larger decks are usually just weaker because they are less consistent. The tradeoff is not even worth delayed fatigue. Even for control and highlander decks more than 30 cards is unnecessary.

The game play reason is some classes will see better benefit than others because the game was designed with a card limit. Those with hyper draw, and the ones that get more tempo from spewing cards will do better (warlock and rogue, and those with zero cost cards).

The practical reason is blizzard doesn’t want to balance anything like that.

You actually can in Wild. Put one C’thun, the Shattered in your deck. After it shatters, you’re playing with a 33 card deck. Some highlander or odd or even card can bump you up to 35. There may be other examples.

What is there to balance? More cards makes your decks less consistent and thus overall weaker. There’s a reason people stick the minimum allowed deck size in other games that have no max cap. I suspect a reason we are hard locked to 30 card starting deck size in Hearthstone is that its partly dumbing the game down for noob insurance.

Exactly. It’s well known that Magic the Gathering noobs tend to make their decks too large until a decent player corrects them. If you’re designing an online game with chat disabled, this will never happen. Because of this, I’m a hard “no” on this, should be max

That said, I think it’s design space to explore. I wouldn’t mind a Legendary that had “Start of game: For each non-duplicate non-Legendary card in your deck, shuffle in a copy and gain 1 Armor.”

Or just have the game tell the player in the tutorial 30 card decks are the best. If you play any more than that the chance you’ll get your card draw is lowered. The chance you’re get your win condition is lower. Your deck becomes weaker.
Maybe team 5 just loves to power creep board clears (Shield Shatter) and is afraid that salty players will complain about some slow, greedy fatigue decks that are ridiculously weak.

There’s literally no where in the entire game that the game tells you what is and isn’t good.
