Why are the devs so vehemently against autosquelch?

I can’t find a solid answer anywhere as to Why they don’t want to implement such a simple feature.

Emote don’t add anything, they are really really annoying and it’s kinda tiresome to have to squelch my enemy every single match. I’ve heard in the past that they consider it to be “part of the game”…Why? if it tilts people and isn’t part of the core gameplay, why not just implement a way for those (like me) who dispise the emotes to just turn them off?

There’s rarely a time when they are used as genuinely nice gestures or applicable to the situation. The emotes here are akin to saying “ezgame” “this was way too easy” after defeating someone at the table in a paper tcg.

They’ve literally said why in the most recent AMA - they view emotes as not being inherently bad natured.

If you want a different or more detailed answer as to why they won’t just give you what you want, you’ll never actually get one of them to reply directly to you here. Go hit up Reddit and get a thread trending there, or hit up one of their Twitter accounts. During reveal season, I literally had Celestalon reply to me within a few hours on a subject (Magetheridon/Dormancy/Duplication) on Twitter when there had been a ton of threads on the topic for quite some time on these forums.

I think they’ll consider it a “devisive and toxic” subject and will probably not respond on twitter or reddit.

It seems very odd of them to just “Assume” that emotes are “not inherently bad natured” what does that even mean? Yeah…an iron maiden is not inherently bad natured either, then you use it for something less good.

Honestly feels like concealed laziness on their part :\

Just goes to show they don’t play their own game (or are even more naive than a stereotypically naive anime character)

It’s equally insane how many people automatically assume they ARE bad natured.

So people spamming emotes for a minute long without doing anything are doing it for jolly good reasons?

It’s actually not equal. To quote the old proverb: if a key opens many locks, it is good key. If lock opened by many keys, it is bad lock.

Which one is the key and which is the lock? I’ll let others argue over it :stuck_out_tongue:

Whether it’s because of laziness or design philosophy, the end result is the same. So why worry about the reasons?

Oh. So the only argument people EVER bring up for auto-squelch? lol.

The devs dont want you to mute every person to deal with that 1 in 50 edge-case scenario. So what the devs said actually tracks against this argument.

When that happens, wiggle your ham fingers 1.2 inches across and hit that button my guy, I believe in you.

Because Devs are too lazy and incompetent to do anything that wont make them any money.

And how would it harm the game if you mute everyone? Why is it so incredibly important to you that people see your emotes that your enjoyment in the game would be lessened if they didn’t?

Im assuming it has something to do with the feel and atmosphere of the game. With features like that, people tend to turn them on in a moment where its annoyed them the most and never turn it off again.

They’ve stated the reasons for not adding auto-squelch before. Spammers is simply not a good argument for the mechanic, as it rarely ever happens.

Right-click squelch became second nature to me. I just do it automatically right now. Tbh I don’t need auto-squelch any more.

you say rarely, you have likely never played ladder seriously. Also, it’s not neccecerily the spamming but the toxic use of the emotes…like “Thanks” and “oops” when they anihilate you. As such, always assume emotes are used in toxic ways, and the good emotes are the exception. We just don’t agree with the “idea” that emotes are “inherently good natured”.

With what you just said, I dont ever believe you personally could ever view “oops” or “thank you” in any positive context, as you automatically make them a negative interaction in your head. People need to learn to not HATE their opponent just because they are losing to them. It’s just a game.

They are both pretty innocuous statements. I’d be very concerned for your state-of-mind if you started liking an online game with VOIP my friend lol.

Emotes can be seem as anyone want to see they.

So even if the other person tries to be toxic with it. It’s your view on it the only factor deciding if it was “toxic” or not.
Many people consider say well played at the end of the match toxic behavior for example and know what?

I not consider it at all and i gonna still say it.

If some people don’t like a feature of the game, and the feature isn’t integral to the gameplay, then why not give them the option to turn it off in the options menu?

Their reasons for disliking it don’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. What matters is that some people dislike emotes and want to be able to disable them permanently.

But then some people also dislike the implementation of it. It’s not fair to prioritise one view point over the other so they just stay neutral.

If you don’t like having the option to disable emotes, then don’t use it.

It’s a simple QoL change that benefits the people who dislike emotes and doesn’t affect the people who do like emotes. It would be a wholly beneficial addition to the game.

But I don’t like people turning off the only human interaction in the game. I don’t want all of my greetings to be ignored because people can’t stand the audacity of a single voice line and a little text bubble.
