I remember back in the day when Blackrock Mountain was released, the decks featuring Reno were called singleton. And it’s an easy word to understand: stands form “single”, meaning one of a kind. But now nobody seems to use it anymore, instead people only say highlander. But what is it? Is it something on high land? Like a (blackrock) mountain? And which do you prefer?
There can only be one.
I’m actually curious where the highlander term came from as well
I think they are people from a mountain and they feel higher than you!
Highlander a movie from 1986. About immortals fighting until there is only one.
He’s the one, pure in his heart
Shining fair in the bliss never lost
Noble grace, innocent faith
Running throughout the fields immense
Shouting free in the air embraced
Dancing there with the wind
highlander means very expensive deck

It’s from the show The Highlander. If you don’t know the premise of the show, you wouldn’t understand.
Basically, in The Highlander, there are a bunch of “immortals” on Earth. If you kill one, you steal their power/knowledge. In the end, there can be only 1 left remaining.
Movie was before the show. Show was an spinoff.
Ohh god now I really feel old.
The term is based on a movie about inmortals that can only die by being decapitated by other inmortals and in said process the executioner absorbs the executed’s knowlege, each inmortal in the movie is sometimes known to the other inmortals only by sudonims or aliases and the titular character being from Scothland is refered as the “highlander” a term used to refer to mountaineers. Finally the term is used to refer singleton decks based on a phrase in the movie that states that “in the end there can only be one” aluding to all the inmortals killing each other for knowlege.
I see. Thanks for the answers everyone. I still like singleton more.
He committed lèse- majesté against Sean Connery!
BURN THE WITCH!
I only wish I thought of the name! Since the beginning of this game I tried to make highlander decks as both a challenge, and to try for decks with more utility options and more permutations during matches.
The hunter deck right now is super fun; I am very happy these decks have still been supported since Reno came out.
Using the name Highlander is basically a Meme that the community has embraced to define the deck.
The Term Highlander has absolutely nothing to do with Hearthstone, Warcraft, or Blizzard to answer your question more direct.
To add to the answers here (which are all correct), there is a format in Magic: the Gathering called EDH (Elder Dragon Highlander) that has a similar “no duplicates” rule to it. The use of the term “highlander” to describe singleton decks in HS wasalso likepy inspired by this.
It u dint watch The highlander u missed one helluva epic show that later on reflection kinda sucked but not then it was awesome.
