Since matchmaking is based on mmr and not your rank, why do they even have ranks. Why not just give everyone that’s not legend an mmr number so they can actually gauge how good they are instead of giving a rank that really means nothing unless your legend. And couldn’t I just sit at diamond 5 and lose 100 games to lower my mmr and exploit the system to make the climb to legend easy? Or is that not how mmr works?
I believe I read somewhere, in an interview with Blizzard about the new system, that there was some kind of built-in failsafe to prevent exploitation, where after a certain number of losses in a row, your MMR stops changing… if I understood correctly. I know they specifically cited your example (“Could I purposely tank my MMR to face easier opponents?”) and said no, it would not work.

You are only matched on mmr while you have the winstreak bonus or in legend. Otherwise it is business as usual.

In all seriousness, they did mention somewhere that they connect MMR back to your actual rank so tanking it won’t work. Several people, myself included, inquired about this strategy but they covered it in one if their FAQs.

Yeah, the goal of the ladder is placement of personal best and matching with others to try and climb from there.the MMR part is just to prevent “noobstomping” essentially.
Not quite. What they said is you cant tank your MMR for next season by throwing games at a rank floor. For the current season it appears that you can drop it substantially. At least that was my experience when the first 20-30 games, playing the same decks I usually do (stupid memes) saw me facing meta decks which were not the norm in my old rank bracket winning only 4 or 5 games, then I started to face like-minded players again. What happens next season is what Im worried about as Im pretty sure I have currently dropped below their “tanking” threshold.
