Way too much random card generation

Hello there!

I play Heartstone since closed beta and I have been playing TCG’s and other card games since my childhood and I understand that randomness is part of most of the card games and I am willing to accept that.

I am not even against random card generating mechanichs such as discover as they can make the game more interesting/entertaining/fun/whatever. However, we reached the point where many decks generate an almost infinite amount of RANDOM cards.

Since the release of the latest expansion almost 100% of my games are decided by random events. (I am not talking about “Did I draw the right card?” or " Did I matched with a hard counter of my deck?") Too many times I face a situation where my oponent plays a card that generates a random card, that generates 3 random cards, that have a random effect that decides the outcome of the game.

This is not ok. I do not want to win or lose a game by continous coin flips.

If I lose. That is fine and if I win that is even better, but I want player skill to be the main deciding factor of victory and defeat.

I understand that Hearthstone was designed in a way that even simpletons can enjoy it and win enough to keep them milking, but you can find so many people asking the same question over and over again on these forums “Did Team 5 went too far this time?” “Do we have too much RNG in the game?” no matter how many time people beg for a fair experience it seems like Team 5 cares more about streamers and “insanely fun” YouTube video compilations than their actual customers.

Why do we have to sit through a game where our oponent plays a card that generates 2 more card etc. just so later he/she/(insert 99999999 made up fake gender pronouns here) can finish their turn with more cards than they started without the draw back of reduced deck size?

Maybe the issue is that I have been playing Hearthsone since the very begining and I remember when you had to actually think about what you played and how you managed your cards (“Do I fire ball that minion or do I use it later to hit the face and win?” “If I use my removal now, then I wont be able to remove Garrosh later so I will tank that damage with my face for one more turn and let’s see if I can get a better deal.” You get the point.) and I just do not adopt to this new and lazy style of playing.

We just reached the point where current 5 mana spells are stronger than original 10 mana ones and while they remove cards they also genarate other ones. This combined with the insane power creep will cause a lot of issues in the future.

I miss you Brode. The new cards were kinda janky many times, but they were mostly ballanced. Now everything is about powercreep and money.

I honestly agree completely. Just came back from a few years hiatus. I have played in countless online tournaments, hit legend multiple times, and I’m just perplexed at the amount of random card generation in this game now, it is completely ridiculous. There is absolutely zero tact involved with generating random cards that the opponent can’t see. You cannot play around this mechanic, you cannot deduce the most optimal card to play in a given situation, when your opponent can randomly generate their entire deck.

Just… why? It’s supposed to increase replayability? It makes the game more interesting for spectators? You can’t be serious. I don’t disagree with the notion that SOME rng can spice up the game and is in fact integral to card games. You can play around the rng associated with knife juggler, ragnaros, dr boom. What really made this game stale for me quickly was the mechanic of random card generation, the lottery aspect. Lackeys, Zephrys, Dragonqueen, just about the entire mage class, to name a few examples.

If I win a game because I rolled the right lackeys, I don’t feel that I won that game because I made the right decisions. I know I won that game because I generated the correct sequence of random cards. There isn’t much self-satisfaction on winning a game because of that. Maybe some people get off to that, however, I will stick to poker and Magic in the meantime.

None of my friends play this game anymore and I can see why. The competitive scene is dead. No amount of random card generation to induce ‘spectatular, unpredictable plays’ is going to change that and if anything, has only contributed to this game’s demise.

I admit, I’ve been feeling this somewhat as of late. Playing around cards has become more and more difficult because of it. You can play around most tribal aggro decks because their game plan is steady, and some forms of random are more limited: you can play around a Mass Hysteria’s random hits at least somewhat. But then you get lotteries like Evocation, and there’s no way.

Now, I don’t inherently hate Discover - I like the choice that comes when playing it, but as an opponent, one feels absolutely helpless, and it also diminishes the value of a spell if it’s better to discover it than run it.

I had an odd and somewhat large nerf idea: what if all cards that are either generated or discovered are held in the hand face up? It doesn’t stop Flamewaker+Apprentice Hat Trick chains, but it does mean if a Frost Nova is discovered on 1, a person can play knowing the freeze is in hand.

There’s a gray area when it comes to Golden Monkey and Rafaam, but I think overall it would increase the ability to play around these cards without necessarily weakening them directly.

love those games probably the main reason i keep playing
sometimes i make decks with as many card generation as posible just for fun

Pre-nerf meta had very little RNG. Now it’s too much, then? After the nerfs you so desperately asked for, and keep on wanting more?

Can’t have the cake and eat it too.

Nobody ever complained about “too little” rng SMH

Reading is hard.

It’s really hard.

I wish I could insert the GIF.

Here Here!! Well said my friend!!

Would you apply that same logic to scratch-off lottery tickets???

I agree too. Played since Beta and I play mage exclusively. Since before this expansion I went completely to casual, and since this release I have played practically all Wild games. I miss the old days of play/counterplay and the the thought that had to be invested. Now, like you said, it’s slot machine mechanics.

You mean Pre-yearly rotation?? before this newest set came out? no…there was still a LOT of “this card gives you a random blahhh” before…just look at Galakrond Rogue or Priest…nothing but lackeys/stealcards/randomprieststuff. He’s absolutely right. Strategic play, thinking out trades and face damage and stuff is exchanged for flashy “pull a slot machine lever” random spell/creature effects. Games aren’t decided based off of who traded what for what better. They are decided based off of who traded what spells for what lackeys for what EVER to get a win. This may look good in online markets like Twitch and Youtube, but it devalues the game itself.

Is it really so bloody hard to understand what the other guy has written.
