Warlock Class Discussion [Ashes of Outland]

1. Share your hope or come whine about the Class.

2. Anyone have any New Deck Ideas?

I can’t piece together a Non-Galakrond Deck… Every deck I make just looks better with Galakrond in it…

Anyone have recomendations for Galakrond Warlock to replace Rotating Cards: Sn1p Sn4p, Zilliax, and Lord Godfrey with?

This is the only New Deck I could come up with:

Dark Portal Warlock with Malygos (Meme Deck)

2x Mortal Coil
2x Rain of Fire
1x Supreme Archaeology
2x Unstable Felbolt (New Card)
2x Nether Breath
2x Plot Twist
2x Dark Skies
2x Hellfire
1x Magtheridon (New Card)
2x The Dark Portal (New Card)
2x Crazed Netherwing
2x Faceless Manipulator
2x Aranasi Broodmother
1x Fel Lord Betrug
2x Twisting Nether
1x Alexstrasza
1x Dragonqueen Alexstrasza (probably overkill)
1x Malygos

In wild, which is where I play warlock for the past two years, the class is going to be the number one or number two class.

A couple of new cards push cubelock into A+ tier.

A couple of new cards make mecha’thun even better.

A relatively obscure archetype may take some people by surprise. (Cruel Dinomancer)

That’s all I would say for now about warlock in wild.

Now let’s review standard warlock.

One thing that struck me is that the new warlock cards do not suck. This expansion has some of the highest number of useable cards given to warlocks since the past 3-4 expansions.

The next thing going for warlock is sacrificial pact which borders on unfair when everyone is using demons. Warlock may be the one class to effectively counter our soon to be public enemy number one: demon hunters.

The next acquisition for warlock is Kanrethad Ebonlocke and Enhanced Dreadlord. You may know them in their past life as Bloodreaver Guldan and Voidlord. Expired merchant is the sleeper warlock card to duplicate big cards/effects and finally, we have some big cards to duplicate. This would be the final piece of the puzzle for control warlock.

The dark portal is also an interesting piece if you are able to hit certain minions. Warlock has removal for days and is perfectly fine just removing stuff for 5-6 turns in a row without playing a single low cost minion. Sounds like something can be made in that direction yes?

And then we have the very obviously interaction between Nightshade Matron and Hand of Gul’dan. Zoo would certainly like to play a 5/5 rush for 4 mana and draw three cards, thank you very much. But not just zoo, some midrange decks would also very much like to do such a thing.

I’ve played with Cruel Dinomancer quite a bit, and I’m not really seeing what this expansion offers that current versions would really want. What do you see here that would push Dinomancer decks?

My guess is Nightshade Matron
Rush Battlecry: Discard your highest Cost card.

Yes, but Expired Merchant fills that role much more effectively. Getting not just the original but two copies of Dinomancer back makes it much easier to deal with silence and transform effects that could easily shut your game plan down if you only have a single copy left after Nightshade Matron discards the other.

The only card I would consider adding from the new set is Unstable Felbolt as a potential option if I wanted a bit more spell-based removal, especially since I don’t care about my minions getting hit in a Dinomancer deck.

Cruel Dinomancer decks tend to get off a bit too slowly, especially on the turn Dinomancer is played. It’s just a 5/5.

But what if you can draw faster with hand of Guldan. What if you can execute the discard Dinkmancer conditional without losing tempo?

Also dont forget the new secret sauce, Teron Gorefiend. You can double your Dinomancers with just one card. Yesssss.

I just dusted my rotating cards today to craft the Priest cards for tommorows Hall of Fame.

Now with the No-Duplicates Change maybe that was a mistake.

Wild has so many possibilities.

I’m not saying this is a good idea, but man I want to Scrap Imp into Valdris into Shadow Council.

I can see where you’re going with Hand of Guldan, but I’d tend to worry that you could end up missing discarding Dinomancer at all, since both Hand and Dinomancer have the same mana cost.

Teron is a really good idea, though. Thanks. Adding him to Umbra and Baron Rivendare would provide even more options for multiplying Dinomancers.

I believe expire merchant still key in the deck.

Nightshade Matron is just a useful and powerful add on.

Dinomancer decks are quite flexible.

Couple ideas:
Self-Harm Zoo Lock
2x Flame Imp
2x Rain of Fire
2x Sinister Deal
2x Spirit Bomb
2x EVIL Cable Rat
2x EVIL Genius
2x Imprisoned Scrap Imp
2x Imprisoned Vilefiend
1x Bad Luck Albatross
2x Darkglare
2x Neferset Thrasher
2x Diseased Vulture
2x Faceless Corruptor
2x Aranasi Broodmother
2x Khartut Defender (questionable)
1x Zzeraku the Warped

Khartuts might be too slow but this deck deals a lot of self damage so I felt like some additional healing beyond just the Aranasi was warranted.

Highlander Dragon Control Lock
1x Mortal Coil
1x Plague of Flames
1x Sinister Deal
1x Soulfire

This one is a really, really rough idea. Not having Bloodbloom will certainly make this deck much weaker, if not outright unplayable. I included Shadow Council because it could be a way to ‘reroll’ super expensive minions that wind up in hand into something playable for the middle game.

There’s also a Rustsworn Cultist in there that could ‘spoil’ some Darkest Hours a bit, but I felt like it might be able to combo with some of the token makers to make the board just sticky enough for a Darkest Hour the following turn.

Given how many demons are likely to be running around, I can see an argument for a second Sac Pact. Impferno is also something to consider as an early game aoe or a potential boost to the demon tokens.

I bailed on Warlock as a class bc of how same it is.
Mana cheat w skull, mana cheat with bloom, demon flood with DK, OTK with Mecha, Lackeys…eww…like plot twist I guess?

I mean I just sat there going these decks are so predictable what you are doing its just not fun.

Either way, as last year taught us, the number 1 first thing to do each expansion for wild is to look at bloodbloom and what’s changing with that card each expansion.

Or in this case, bloom-hour, or just bloom.
That’s the test of any warlock spell, bloodbloom and any new spell.
The test for any minion either purple or grey is “darkest hour”.

Bc every one of us was caught off guard for a day or week or so until that bloodbloom list broke free, which shined a light on “watch bloodbloom” each expansion.

The scary part is what cards make bloomlock more consistent?
If that 3 card deck gets any more consistency it will terrorize wild way more than Kael druid or so, right?

Like, what if locks get idk a 51 percent consistency going Imps (whichever way) + Bloom + Hour by turn 5 or so? Then the format is “play warlock” or “play Treachery Warlock and hope for 1 space on your opponent’s board” or “play an aggro deck that can seal by turn 5”. Yes?

So, any cards this expansion buff Bloomlock?
Hopefully not, its an ever going scary threat if buffed.
I don’t see any cards that buff Bloomlocks assembly consistency or speed.
If we had something like shadow visions for warlock oh boy, we’d be in for a turn 4-5 meta, or treachery, or lose in wild.

This with Zzeraku is gonna be a fun time.

What is the Moarg Artificer interaction with Nether Breath? Healing for 8 vs 4. Lots of AoE spells will get boosted.

What about Over confident Orc to save some life? Tar Creeper was a staple for a long time at 5 Health. This has 6.

Yes, with dragon in hand it should deal 8 and therefore heal 8 due to lifesteal. In my dragon control list, I figure it plays pretty well with a lot of warlock spells and will usually die pretty easily so you don’t have to worry too much about it’s effect on you.

I’m curious if it works like I think with Dark Skies: each ping deals 2 damage until the spell fully resolves and Mo’arg is likely dead from soaking a couple himself.

Dark Skies with Thalnos deals 2 to everything, I’m surprised I never saw it ran, but with less cards in the pool maybe he will be played more

Darkglare is definitely interesting.

Lifetap and Flame Imp are awesome with it.

I haven’t thought of any Big Combos with it though. It would be cool with a 1 attack weapon.

You could Plot Twist + Betrug to gain a lot of Mana, but i don’t know what I would do with the mana.

One thing that may be of minor concern to the warlock is healing. There is basically no usable netural healing.

However warlock does still have pretty good healing options within the class itself as compared to rogue and mage so if they aren’t complaining about it, I should probably shut up about it.

If I were to bet on the control warlock deck most likely to succeed, it’s the Quest Warlock. It has more healing, immense draw power, mid/big demons and the ability to do some good old Bloodreaver Guldan shenanigans (Kanrethad prime) three times. This is definitely the first deck I will try.

Protip: the taunt demon that Abyssal Summoner summons comes back as it’s original same size when revived by Guldan/Kanrethad. So warlock doesn’t lack big demons to resurrect, I can assure you that.
