Have you ever crafted a card thinking it would work perfectly with your deck only to find out that its a dud.
HS should allow you to borrow cards temporarily to try them out before you craft them. Its a gimmic to increase revenue for BLZ and it benefits the players.
Rentals last 2 days, only 3 rentals at a time, cant be rented again until new release
Too much lost revenue involved. Just the way of the world, MTG would remove the capability to print paper proxies too if they could lol

Also, I want to talk about something that I have been thinking about, which I know makes your idea worst, but I want to share it anyway.
Recently I was thinking about alternatives ways to spend our gold, specificaly ways to expend 5 or 1 gold (in order for everybody to be able to round up their gold back to X00). And your idea can be it. Each borrowed card can cost 5 gold, so all that extra useless gold that we get from duels and arena, can be usefull.
Also, puting it behind gold is another way for them to avoid some kind of exploit.
This is why people netdeck.
Spending gold like this on individual cards I think will never happen.
Blizzard wants you to buy packs with gold, because it will make you want to buy more packs for money. With your system people wouldn’t buy packs with gold anymore to get the cards they want.
Instead maybe they could put in “pre-made” decks that you could unlock for the season. Maybe the first pre-made is free and the rest cost 500 gold each or something. Then you lose access after the season (if you don’t own all the cards).
work on your friend list and find someone who has the cards to build t that deck you can ask thim to play using some meta decks of your choice to test your deck agaisnt them

It is not buying cards for 5 gold, it is borrowing cards for 5 gold. Plus other restrictions like the once that the OP mentioned.
There is a way to make the OP idea to work and be usefull for the players, and at the same time avoid it to be exploit
Edit: I am not saying that making it to cost gold is the best way to do it. I think that what the OP proposed was enough. But as I said, I was thinking about smaller ways to spend our gold and this seem like one option.
