I don’t like the matching and I don’t think it’s purely random.
I think the new ranks make the flaws of the matching more apparent than ever.
And I really dislike the fact that every time anyone tries to discuss it here they get people attacking their character as though they need psychiatric care.
Having said all of that, I still play. And the real reason is: There is no other free to play game that is this easy to play and understand.
You can play other card games, but their layouts are more confusing and come with a bit of a learning curve. HS can be played by children. Perhaps not well, but anyone can grasp the literal mechanics of play. You grab the card and drop it. The cost, power, and health are easy to read, and understand. And; until lately, so was the text, though that is becoming less true with every expansion.
Agreed about enjoying the ease of understanding.
My recent salt comes from the fact that one’s star bonus runs out 5 ranks BEFORE their last ranked floor. I definitely feel like that’s unnecessarily increasing the difficulty of climbing. Wasn’t the point of the new system to more accurately pair up players based on their skill? Doesn’t reaching, say, Platinum prove I’m at least skilled enough, and took the necessary time, to get to that point? I was heartbroken to learn I’d have to slog up through Gold 5-Gold 1 again, after pushing myself hard the first time. UGH!!
Yeah this month I reached diamond 7 by myself and then the floor dropped out. It was win one, lose one, over and over. Finally, the Amazing Jonius came on (No relation to the Amazing Reno I don’t think:) and helped me hit 5. I made it all the way to three and then the same thing. I am now at Diamond 4 and Legend seems like a pipe dream.
Have you tried LoR? It is kind of a blend of HS and MtG. One of the nice things is you can complete quests playing against the AI and it has a decent tutorial as well as challenges that explain different concepts. I play both but I enjoy the randomness of Hearthstone, but you can get much more free stuff from LoR. Anyway, if you haven’t tried it, you may want to give it a look.
I’ve never tried it. To be honest, I would never have played this game were it not for WoW. i used to collect the Wow Trading cards and I used to be really into the Wow pet battles. When Blizzard killed the trading card game, I thought that HS would offer cross game pets like the trading card game did lol.
They didn’t; and I quit Wow ages ago, but I and my nephew, and his friends all played HS for the first year, and then they all got bored and bailed, and I have been here ever since.
I’m constantly drafting good decks in arena and losing because my opponent will high roll everything, have the right answers or simply top deck lethal. I seem to recall a recent example of a druid deck with a number of very good cards including four swipes that only went 4 or maybe 5 wins, I was salty after that.
Just the other day I drafted a Dragonqueen Alextrasza with only two duplicates in the deck, so I figured it would still be useful. The run went 3/3, didn’t even get to use it.
It’s like the game is trying to make me hate it.
Posting my recent salt which just happened literally then after a match. Playing Libram Paladin and I’m not expecting the world anyway but I had a Priest matchup and the copy cards alone was just filth. Consecration when they needed it, Micro Mummy.
Bronze 3 by the way. No idea where my opponent is sitting on ladder.
Not only that, with the Invoke Galakrond mechanic, it was giving minions like Catrina. He stole most of my buffed minions with the Libram of Wisdom so after trading into mine, they kept my Libram cards. Of course Sethekk Veilweaver did a good job giving them good spells.
The amount of card generation in this game is stupid oppressive. It’s kind of stupid that a class like Priest can play it’s own class, get cards from anywhere in their class and that’s not all, also get copies of the opponents class cards as well.
Demon Hunter who again? Such a filthy class.

Arena is absolutely terrible… The power creep each expansion has brought hasade it so any moron can be offered high power cards and win. Straight out of the battlegrounds playbook. I can’t wait for the next expansion to come out and reduce the required thinking down further in arena…

Now I dont recall the exact order of play. But I know for everything I played there was a perfect card being played on the other side that would counter my play.
Opponent Mage
Arcane Breath discover a spell
Flame Ward 1 in 30 or discovered but perfect vs aggro board control 1 in 30
Arcane Amplifier perfect for board control 1 in 30 three dmg perfect for destroying the minion he needs to which has 3 health
Ice Barrier Secret keep me alive (and it does in the end) until I can play win condition card 1 in 30 or discovered
Scalerider (needs to be holding a dragon) deal 2 perfect damage to my cant be targeted by spells or hero powers minion 1 in 30 at just the right time to deal 2 dmg to destroy it
Arcane Intellect 1 in 30 or discovered
Polymorph 1 in 30 or discovered
Frost bolt I cant attack with my weapon 1 in 30 or discovered
Big Old Whelp draw a card
Azure Explorer discovered another Azure Explorer because played a second one
Dragon Caster (needs to be holding a Dragon) next spell is free
Upgraded Flamestrike 6 dmg to remove my board so I cant win
Twin Tyrant deal four damage to two minions 1 in 30 perfect timing to destroy 2 of my minions that have 4 health remove my board so I cant win
How do I know is a Highlander? Zephyrs picks Aveging Wrath even though the game is won and they need to show off the 1 2 3 RNG all flowed perfectly for me.
Perfect drawing and Perfect timing of 1 in 30 cards throughout the match to counter everything I played.
My biggest one is running DH out of cards and stabilizing for them to hit topdeck skull into skull into … and im ded
Play against a Pirate Warrior deck
Draw a weapon give it plus 2 yep here we go
Ancarr the first upgraded weapon the always get is Ancarr get those pirates from the deck
after that one ends play your second draw a weapon from your deck and get
Livewire Lance gets those Lackeys building up at just the right time
So what’s the secret to this deck? But its no secret because it happens every time
Needs to have a Risky Skipper to board wipe you around turn 5 with other low cost pirates and always does. Needs to have Sky Raiders and always does.
Needs to have the Blood Brute or Warrior going to be in Big trouble and might not make it to the next key board wipe. They do and its at a super discount thank you Risky Skipper.
Well, I know what’s coming but I cant sit here. I have some 4 health minions and one is a 5 attack.
I can get em down to 3 health because I know he has armor coming. I cant wait its my best shot going into the next round.

Risky Skipper, Armorsmith, Parachute Brigand, Bomb Raider (make bomb) and 1 mana left OH! its a Titan Lackey toss it on Bomb Wrangler - now I have taunt and cant lose.
Couldn’t lose anyways because the one bomb blew up and took out my 5 attack. And now the Warrior gained 12 armor.
Can win unless the cards are mulligan for and dropped perfectly in order in a 30 card deck. Thank you fishing cards that allows for that to happen.
Whats the other 15 cards in the deck or any other deck for that matter? Doesn’t matter, as long as I always get these 15 every game off the top of the deck (and they do)
Highlander decks feel so damn bad to play. I love playing Highlander, but the metas offerings for Hunter/Rogue feel if I don’t mulligan perfectly there’s no chance at winning.
