The real problem with Tickatus

Forgive me for chiming in, I rarely post (never) on the forums but I thought I would offer my thoughts on Tickatus.

The reason Tickatus feels so bad is because this is Hearthstone. Hearthstone is a card game. We love crafting cards and collect precious dust to do so. We build decks of cards. Some of us purchase packs of cards, others grind for hours/days to get free cards. We love our combos and battlecries and various effects! That is our joy (and addiction).

You see where I’m going…

When a mechanic burns our cards like Tickatus and mill rogue and others, it feels like the joy (drug) of the game is being stolen from us and it doesnt feel very good. In fact, its a sickening feeling and no one wants to play a game that leaves you feeling sickened.

One or two cards burnt is tolerable. No one is screaming to nerf Gnomeferatu.

I would just ask blizzard to perhaps reduce the number of cards burnt and thus preserving the last shreds of our joy.

Be safe everyone

Or people could just make peace with the fact that burning cards means nothing if you don’t get to the bottom of your deck since it’d be like those cards are in the part of your deck that you never draw

The “feel bad” feeling of seeing your cards burned by ticketus is comparable to the “feel bad” that comes from losing against an aggro deck before having 8 mana crystals; if you somehow survive against aggro till turn 12+, they will probably concede, so they are still “burning” your whole deck.

I think blizzard will nerf ticketus anyways (just like secret passage, it seems too good on paper), even if it wouldn’t be oppressive.

If that will happen, remember that losing against an aggro deck on turn 5, or winning against them because they concede on turn 12, has the same effect of “burning your entire deck”.

Some cards may seem cool (Leoroxx + Oondasta), but in the end, they aren’t good against aggro; ironically, if you manage to draw these in time, they are good against ticketus.

So, if you really like to play with your cards (I am not sure which cards you are thinking), they are probably more playable against a slow ticketus deck, than a fast aggro DH

If mill makes you feel bad then never play Magic the Gathering. It’s an entire archetype and it’s actually relevant to the meta (unlike Ticketus).

agree, similar feeling… regardless, if you are unable to play your beloved cards its going to have a certain impact on the enjoyability of the game. The Blizzard Psychologists should have known better

I think it’s part of an attempt to update the game to match competitors. MtG, for example, has mill, hand, and mana disruption. We got all of those in the last couple of sets. HS designers will look at play rates and keep creating things that people craft.

By that logic, any loss that doesn’t happen at fatigue would be less enjoyable than losses that happen earlier, since the former allows you to play all your cards.

Based on personal experience, this argument seems unlikely to be correct.

The whole point of “joy” is to give you something to feel when it’s taken from you.

Stop expecting positive experiences in things and maybe you’ll finally see the truth.

Somebody is having a bad day.

The universe is having a bad existence. I’m just awake to the reality of it.

You sound like a hoot at parties

Parties are useless. I’d rather break things.

The discussion forum for a video game seems an odd place to hang out, then.

its not even about playing “all” of your cards. Its just a general feeling you get when cards are “burned” because cards are the lifeblood of Hearthstone. Not an argument, just a thought.

Same as how people like to say ‘steal’ instead of ‘copy’ priest.

Emotional responses that overshadow rational observation.

yes, this describes it well…

There are cards that can steal …

I’m talking about mind vision, even thought steal which despite the name is not actually stealing.

We use to have more of those cards and copy cards like seance and people took personal offense to copying and called it stealing.

They HoF’d coldlight oracle for a lot less and then unnerfed raza and gave demon hunters the ability to deal 15 face damage from hand, that’s not to mention all the hand vomit decks around enabled by ridiculously aggro synergy cards and the piss poor ability of slower decks to stabilize at any point unless they draw perfectly and said aggro player draws like garbage - unless you’re playing warlock, of course, they can remove anything from existence.

BTW: tickatus is not a “mill” per se. It destroys the card. Simple as that. Mill is the condition where you destroy the cards when the player cannot hold anymore of them, which can be countered by having hand space for more cards. You can’t counter tickatus mechanic unless you defeat the player before doing so.

Aggro decks are ridiculously broken right now and they should NOT be the answer for this kind of mechanic.

I’ll tell you a secret. Tickatus feels bad because he is the wincondition of Warlock, and his appearance on the board means you’re likely to lose.
Losing will always feel bad no matter the wincon , and Tickatus is just a more subtle and indirect way of making you lose than C’thun. Yes, you might still win. But you can’t go on in the value game.
