This was always the plan. They were going to slowly move us away from the shore so that we wouldn’t notice being dragged out to sea until it was too late.
It’s only a matter of time before they offer “bonus” runestones for larger buys, and then there’s no price for anything in the game… just offers for more and more stones.

I haven’t touched runestones. I won’t be purchasing cosmetics nor any other product for which runestones are needed. I will be sticking solely to real money purchases. If such items become that runestones are necessary, I may stop paying altogether.

This might sound sarcastic, but it isn’t meant to be. Go try Teamfight Tactics. Apparently it’s a lot like BGs with much better graphics and it’s FTP friendly. Selwynn has been playing it.

Here’s the idea. Every transaction made has a percentage taken from that transaction losing Blizzard money. By introducing Runestones, you make one purchase of however many Runestones you need (one transaction) and purchase whatever you like with them, thus avoiding that deduction from otherwise potential multiple purchases made with real currency.
Here’s the real reason. In many countries, there are laws prohibiting gambling. Similar to loot boxes, some of what you purchase in this game (i.e. packs) fit that bill. By introducing Runestones, Blizzard is able to evade these legal restrictions because real currency is not being used to purchases such items. You are purchasing a virtual currency, and then using that currency (not real money, thus legally not gambling) to purchase, say, bundles of packs which are slot machines.
While what you’re saying is correct (and stop changing your avatar :P)
I’m more aggravated with the 3 currencies. How do you address that?

I’m thinking it’s apples and oranges. Runestones serve a specific role, whereas gold is the passive reward for simply playing the game. Gold is useful, because it can be used in a couple of different ways, but namely, buying packs. I’ve explained the reason Runestones exist above.
Gold: The reward for playing.
Runestones: The virtual currency that is purchasable and spendable so as to essentially evade transaction fees and gambling laws. It’s essentially a representation of real world currency. You spend X to get Y. With X you can buy multiple Y’s, and none of which cost the company a percentage of the purchase. Only that first purchase of Runestones cost them, but it helps to evade players making several purchases that add up and reduce the bottom line because of said fees.
One purchase of a couple thousand Runestones to purchase whatever you like, as opposed to several different purchases, all having a percentage detracted from the purchase. One purchase is better than several purchases when it comes to RL money. And again, the gambling laws. It makes perfect sense.
Yeah, it’s crappy, but it is what it is and honestly isn’t hurting us (yet).

Nah, I summed it up well. I’m not saying an addict cannot quit, but understand in active addiction the addict of course knows this is probably bad for not only health, but just about everything. Nevertheless, until that metaphorical switch is flipped, it is not about will power. It took me ODing and being on a ventilator to have this particular epiphany. Sadly, it wears off faster than you would think.
Honestly, with all of the knowledge we have about substance dependency and addiction, it is insulting to point to will power as the issue. It is not about that at all.
Maybe substances like nicotine and caffeine are in a different category than what I am talking about but my point stands.
I believe differently probably because I don’t believe free will exists (at least in the colloquial sense).

So just browsing around and stumbled upon this…

What gets me is having to pay IRL money now… for something that was before able to be obtained… by playing… with gold… obtained by playing…

There is one sad problem.
Other then doing Resin artwork which sadly has a 6-10 hr wait time between sessions; Hearthstone Battlegrounds is my GO TO when I want to pass the time.
I thrive for the what can I do;
I coughed up the $40 straight out for the 2 battle pass’; and its funny. (not) The bullcrap (How to win in Battlegrounds season 2) seemed to progress more and more. I not lie. as soon as I got the 2nd pass
IF ONLY there could be this exact game but completely ftp! Everything is earned just playing. AND STAYS FREE! oh wait; that use to be blizzard… well now they need a new! oh wait; copyright >.<
