The Magic Wisdomball will cast spells on the Elusive Minion

The Magic Wisdomball will cast spells on the Elusive Minion.

I believe Magic Wisdomball is a randomly targeted effect, which means it should still be able to hit minions with elusive

I don’t recall any card casting random spells being able to target elusive minions.
Surely this has something to do with the latest change they made to prevent it from casting spells on your minions.

I honestly don’t either, but I did check the wiki regarding targeting restrictions, and it states elusive minions “can still be hit with randomly targeted or untargeted effect”. Of course, this is just a wiki of observations, not official rules, so I’m not certain that this is correct.

You’d think for as many random spells as I like to cast that I would know this for certain, but I just can’t think of a way to test it out.

Untargeted effects can always hit elusive minions so I don’t really know why the wiki talks about it.
Also it’s talking about effects, not spells, which includes more things that would be able to target an elusive minion, like battlecries.

According to the wiki “randomly targeted effects” mean a spell where the targets are random, even if you’re the one casting the spell, like arcane missile.

So this part of the wiki is not talking about actually targetted spells being cast at random

I think I can agree with what you are saying.

So, now I guess the question is whether or not there’s a bug with the weapon. I haven’t seen any other reports like this yet

Well I don’t really have any doubt that this bug is related to this change :

  • [NEW] Rules update: cards that force spells to be cast (like duplication or recasting) now check for target legality. (Meaning, for example, you can no longer use cards like Conductivity to Altered Chord an Elusive minion or Promotion a minion that isn’t a Silver Hand Recruit). If the would-be target is not a legal target, that portion of the spell won’t have any effect.

Which implies that it was actually possible to “target” elusive minions when casting spells at random. I don’t really recall it but if they had to fix it then it must have existed.
So I think they may have missed one case scenario.
Maybe an overlap of the 2 rules.

The weapon had a problem that it was able to target your minions when there was no valid target on the other side. They may have changed the code in a way that it still tries to cast targetted spells when there’s 1 minion. They may have hopped that the new rule would take care of it.

But the weapon casts generic spells and forces it at ennemies. Whereas the new rule only checks the spell, and not the forcing of the weapon. The rule checks the board : there are valid targets on your board, so it accepts the cast.
The cast of the spell has been accepted, but since the weapon forces it on ennemies, it picks the only “valid” targets it has : the only ennemy minion, being elusive.

OP hasn’t specified the spells being cast. If it was polymorph, the theory stands. If it was forstbol or fireball, it doesn’t, since the ennemy hero was a valid target that should have had priority (over something elusive).
