In Battlegrounds, the best part of Akazamzarak was Frozen Barrier! Now it’s just boring with it always offering the same four secret options.
What if there were even 4 basic cards and then 12 different one-off cards in Akazamzarak’s deck (2 possible options per tavern level)? so it starts off doing 3 basic cards and 1 special one-off card. Then as the one-offs are used it filters down to just the four basic cards? That would add variety while cutting down abuse on the more fun cards.
Part of the spectacle on Akazamzarak was seeing him always have 1 or 2 secrets that never seem to pop to keep you guessing. What’s there to guess now? Aim right on tavish if he’s using snake aim high for shield matrix?
A lot of times game devs in pursuit of “balance” only succeed in draining away the excitement. Things that are truly fun do not SEEM balanced. The real trick to balance isn’t to make things more boring but to ACTUALLY balance a bunch of things that do not seem balanced to the average player.
There is no such thing as a good game that seems balanced to most of it’s players.
