The concede meta has come to Battlegrounds

I have seen more people concede in the first few turns these since the latest patch than over the course of many months playing this game mode and I can’t say I blame them.

Battlegrounds has become twice as highroll than it has ever been. While before the patch Quilboar and Elemental were clearly dominant with Murlocs being the anti-meta pick I would still see pirates, dragons, mechs and beast all win occasionally. While every archetype now has a fighting chance if you don’t get those key cards quick you fall behind and this deficit only grows with every turn and these core cards are very early.

Pupbot, Leapfrogger, Honcho, Smuggler, Bird Buddy, Impatient Doomsayer, Tarecgosa are all tier 3 and below and needed to start a board as the power difference between those with and without these key cards are like night and day. If you simply aren’t offered any of these cards you don’t stand a chance. This new patch promotes picking an archetype early and sticking with it as most boards now has permanent scaling.

It’s also much more difficult to simply splash in cards from one archetype onto a board of a different archetype in the early game where building a “not great but good enough” board matters most. While infested wolf was a decent at best card it had the benefit of working on a board with no other beasts, it’s replacement in bird buddy does not have this luxury and this is echoed throughout the design of a lot of the new cards, being incredibly xenophobic with no valuable traits on their own.

Another example would be Seabreaker Goliath. While non-pirate board would never benefit from his Overkill ability his windfury made it still valuable as a random tier 5 discover or on a menagerie board meanwhile his replacement in Tony Two-Tusks works exclusively with pirates so much so that his skill going off on a menagerie board could be considered a downside as you lose the ability to triple any amalgadons that are targeted.

Personally, my only problem with battlegrounds (when I played) was the locking of certain characters behind a pay wall. I was being torn up every match by the same new character that I was unable to get because I didn’t buy the battlegrounds pass.

Battlegrounds perks aren’t particularly p2w, its only 2k gold if that.

That’s not the point. Characters are behind a pay wall in a mode that’s had all characters available for all players since day 1. The pass gave you the ability to emote and gave 2 extra chances at better characters. Now, it’s obvious blizzard is trying to find ways to push players to buy the pass. Which wouldn’t be a problem if they didn’t hide characters behind said pay wall.

Paywall ? The battleground pass is literally buyable for 2000 gold.

How is that a paywall ?

By your logic, constructed is locked behind a paywall too because you can buy packs with gold.

Every game is locked behind a paywall because you need a phone or a PC…

That’s not even true and irrelevant, by all means start a thread on your disliking of battlegrounds perks but this has how they’ve worked even since ashes of outlands possibly even further back as you can see here with the patch notes clearly stating “Players with the Tavern Pass will have early access to the following new heroes before they’re formally released on June 23”.

Please keep the topic relevant to the discussion put forth.

My bad. But the gripe remains.

2000 for f2p players is a decent amount. Do you want a Battleground pass or 20 packs when you really need cards?

Its wierd that y’all are defending this practice. But, then again, y’all can support whatever you want. I’m just saying, to me, it’s kinda BS.

Before you talk, go look at the definition of paywall.

You clearly don’t know what a paywall is.

Thank, bee, I’ll do that. Appreciate the heads up.

I only play battlegrounds, pretty much, and I comfortably make enough gold to buy the 2k pass each time it needs renewing. Hearthstone is a for-profit enterprise, so I am okay with them having a modest charge to play it.

Oh I don’t have a problem with the charge so much as either pay real money or sacrifice the currency you need for packs.

Considering battlegrounds gives you nothing as a reward for playing it I don’t see why there is anything locked behind the pass. Blizzard needs tos tick with cosmetics and stop gouging.

Probably to manage development costs, but i mean.

The development costs for hearthstone are like commissioned art portraits and coding. They don’t even need to 3d model, i like the game and it works, but really it’s gotta be cheap to make and pretty profitable, but giving stuff for free probably isn’t a shining business model.

Think i’ve seen one person concede immediately, then a few people concede a few turns or so into it, assuming because they just wanted to finish a daily/weekly quest, because i’ve done that too, especially since a couple of those mid-quitters i ran into recently had me on the ropes lol.

Nice derail of a thoughtful OP. On topic: I agree with the OP. I was never a conceder, but I am now. It’s senseless to continue, the scaling is insane and there are no catchup mechanics.

Exactly my point and thank you for not talking about Battlegrounds perks lmao, you start scaling so soon and there are far more important cards at lower tiers if you don’t get them fast and fight other people with them you’re better off conceding than slogging it out.

I’ve noticed it a lot more too. I personally think it’s people queueing up with another account and purposely conceding to remove the 15 damage cap.

It happens everytime there is reset and big patch (and before it hits, as people dont try to climb anymore) - people dont care that much about their rating, some people just try it out and leave right away etc.

It will stabilize again in few weeks.

Characters are hidden behind “paywall” just for 2 weeks, than unlocked for everybody. and as mentioned, it costs 2000 gold to get it for expansion - that is quite affordable considering you get from it usually what, 1 legendary in average?

So true, brother. I peaked at 9200k rating in BG before the patch and now I can see they truly broke the game so I will not be playing it as my main mode this season. They have doubled down on everything I hated within BG and just ran with even more dishonest, disgusting RNG focused mechanics.

Dragons, Demons and Beasts have received scaling that might as well make Quillboar, Elementals not be in the game. Mechs are in this weird middle ground where they do exactly the same top 4 double deflecto comp but better, yet they won’t win vs dragon or demon scaling after it takes off. Murlocs are Murlocs and they will always do ok in some lobbies, but they’re inconsistent at best and the toxifin change isn’t helping them much. Release Smuggler ruined launch and now leapfrogger/doomsayer are so clearly dominant that I can’t see other tribes competing unless they highroll their wincons and beasts/demons lowroll. As is, I am confident I could make a push to 8-9k by next week if all I did was force demons and beasts every game.

Nguyen, the new hero is also quite the kick in the nuts. You’re telling me this pay only hero who gets a random power every turn can also get ONCE PER GAME powers like Reno Jackson’s golden minion power or Alextraza’s double dragon on tavern 5 power? Why even have those heroes in the game anymore then if this guy can get those powers and effectively do what they do but better? Oh, right, because “well it’s random chance”. Standard, Arena and Duels have all become victims of the repugnant RNGstone highroll fetish team 5 has and even if BG was random af before, it allowed people with game knowledge and dedication to mitigate that risk and at least know how to play for top 4 when you knew you weren’t going to win. Now with scaling like demons getting 50+ in stats every turn off a single golden, the game has been dumbed down. Top cards like Aggem or Lightfang are literally too slow for this meta now.

Eagerly awaiting the release of YGO Masters. I am already only playing HS for BG and getting dia 5 rewards while playing MtG and Duel Links on the side. This butchering of BG will be the final nail in the coffin unless they fix it. Like, they already made standard unfun for 1 whole month and then they had to mess with the only fun mode left.
