The artwork of Uldum is kinda all over the place?

So this might doesn’t bother or even interest a lot of people but in my opinion one of HS’s biggest strength has always been the aesthetics of the game and I feel like this expansion the quality of the overall cardart took a nosedive.

There are - as always - a lot of strong artworks like the new Elise legendary minion, Bloodsword Mercenary or Diseased Vulture but some are just unpolished or downright lazy.

The worst offenders (imo) so far:

Frightened Flunky - even as a reference, this design falls flat. It looks totally out of place

Questing Explorer/Brazen Zealot/Pressure Plate - are their faces melting? :-/

Anka the Buried - this design (imo) is a total mess. I hope I won’t see this card too often, it’s just ugly to look at.
Also: Why is this mummy pulled straight from a horror movie while every other mummy looks cartoony (from a colour and lighting-standpoint)

Grandmummy - very cartoonish… which is fine BUT makes the card look totally out of place in this particulare cardgame.

Salhet’s Pride - this looks like a child drew it and a professional tried colorize it as good as possible

Reeno - his legendary minion and legendary quest look like two different people. The minion is done very well and has a very strong composition while the quest Renno (again) looks very cartoony.

Am I picky? Yes, I might be. But this kinda worries me. We already had a change in artwork not too long ago changing cards like Deadly Shot from clear artwork to a Ballista - which makes no sense at all.

No shock, you’d think with a game that generates a ton of money they could get some quality artists.

They actually do have some damn fine artists (like the cards I have mentioned as positive examples) but I can only begin to imagine what went wrong with the other designs. Some of them really look like artworks you’d expect from an indie cardgame that tries their best at a new IP. This isn’t at all what I expect from Blizzard.

They used their budget to acquire a new coffee machine.

Priorities.

I thought anka looked nice, looks like a old fashioned mummy

Those people are gone, now its about catering to the sideshow freaks an moronic ideologies. I won’t dive into it anymore, but see for yourself at other titles like Overwatch. What a disaster.

The amount of screeching that new barefoot guy is generating is friggin’ hilarious, though.

You leave Zalae out of this!

He will continue doing pull-ups until the end of time.

His gainz will be eternal.

The whole topic is very subjective overall  Every example on my list is totally up for discussion.

My biggest gripe with the card is that normally you look at a card in this game and you feel the meaning of the name and have an overall idea behind the logic. With this card I at first glance I didn’t even know what I was looking at. The mummy itself is fine but I think that the composition/posture is the biggest problem.

Also on a sidenote: Why does this card look like a real horror-like mummy while all other mummies look like saturday morning cartoons? Was there any quality check?

Yeah you gotta make sort of your own story with Anka the Buried, i tried looking up on wow wiki for the character but it seems its a hs original? I couldn’t find any other mentions besides on hearthstone related pages atleast.

But i think the adventurers may have awakened anka and she has a poor posture thanks to being buried for so long?
Just assumptions i am making, there seems to be a coffin i think behind her in the artwork? not sure.

I agree its weird to have a horror like mummy as Anka and then a card like grandmummy :p, but i suppose its to appease a wider audience some like silly looking characters some like more realistic or darker artwork.

I just want some good looking golden cards. It’s been so long since we got an actually good animation golden card.

so steam must be a smaller company since the publish every games populations including there own. and its kinda funny the three examples you gave are companies that are nortorisuly bad by the next generation. EA is literaly on the list of worse compnaies to work for repeatedly from for magizines like wall street journal and forbes.[quote=“GetSchwifty-21328, post:1, topic:10612”]

naw hearthstone biggest strength was a built in player base, whales and the fact they were one of the first popular online card games with some success.

Agreed
I love how Walking Fountain already looked OP from 100 miles away to anyone with a brain - have you seen that golden animation? It does basically NOTHING xD

Consistent with previous expansions to me.

In a good or bad way?

There’s always been several art styles in HS -lots of stock pictures came from the WoW TCG and build kind of “the” HS style, but this was never set in stone.

Yes that’s true but this expansion has been the first one that actually annoys me in that regard. There were always designs that were more out of line and experimental than others (the positive way to see it) but Uldum seems pretty offensive so far (and from what I’ve read on Hearthpwn, I’m not the only one by far).

I actually never stopped to think about it to be honest. I feel as though they have an ‘Uldum/desert’ type feel to them…for the most part.

I’m more leaning towards the sound of the cards when they’re played. I hope they add some really catchy ones that I’ll be saying long after my laptop is turned off or funny ones etc.

what’s more disturbing is they are clearly running out of ideas… rehashing stuff they already did.

Yeah, kinda. Discover is done to death. It’s at a point where this might as well be the main keyword of the game.
