The (Actual) Problem With Mercenaries

The true problem with Mercenaries is simple: there aren’t enough Mercenaries. The gameplay is solid, the customization and grind could use some work, but not having enough Mercs is the real problem. Too few Mercs means you’re way more likely to get portraits from packs, devaluing them. Too few Mercs means some comps (Merclocs) don’t even have enough cards to be run, while others (Shadow, Frost, Dragons) require multiple legendaries to be viable. Legendaries you’ll never pull, because you’ll get a portrait instead.

I mean there are enough murlocs to build a murloc comp… (not pure Murlocs, but that should be discouraged anyway).

My problem right now is the higher end content just takes too long, and the consolation prizes kind of suck. Just feels like a waste of time right now to me.

You can’t get portraits instead of a legendary.

It certainly reduces the chances. The issue is that if you want to build a Murloc comp, you HAVE to run the exact same murlocs each time. There’s no choice, because there aren’t enough cards for choice,

It’d actually be worse if there were a lot more mercs without creating separate packs for them. The biggest problem facing the mode is a lack of accessibility. It’s flat out way too difficult to experiment in this mode. The pipeline of see something cool on stream/youtube/tournament → doing it yourself is ridiculously slow with no way to speed it up. Grinding and buying packs have ridiculous amounts of diminishing returns that getting into the mode is brutally slow and difficult. More mercs means that you’re going to get even fewer coins for the mercs you need coins for.

The worst part for me isn’t just the grind, it’s that the grind is much harder for some mercs. If, for example, the merc’s rewards are in a level 30 bounty it’ll take forever compared to someone who is in a 10th level one.

I agree there’s a stupid barrier to entry, but even if you make it easier to enter, there’s still very little experimentation to be done. You only get six Mercs in a party, and there aren’t enough mercs for comps to have multiple options. You’re being railroaded into a specific set of Mercs, and that is smothering the mode.

The actual problem with Mercenaries is that it isn’t fun to play.

This is truly a snore fest game mode. I’ve put in many hours, all Mercs maxed out and equipment gained.
I did it for the achievements. The game mode was almost DOA and is one of their least popular products.

From my limited perspective and understanding of this mode, here are my thoughts.

  • It’s blatantly overpriced, namely in buying Mercenary packs.
  • You very often acquire coins for mercenaries that no longer need them.
  • The game is very repetitive alongside being grindy AF.
  • There is a lack of expansions (so far). This necessitates that, while introducing new mercenaries, you’re better off waiting on opening your packs so as you can draw, from packs from packs the newly released Mercenaries.
  • It’s arguably boring for the reasons stated above.
  • It is practically dead,
  • This card

I have to admit that in the week I played Mercenaries, the novelty was exciting, however, did not last.

Do not get me wrong here, please. I am honestly not ragging on any players here, enjoy the mode. Different strokes for different folks. I try not to judge. I’m glad to hear you’re having some fun, at lest not when facing the likes of Mozaki and BSM.

PSA: Mercenary mode is intentionally designed to obtain as money as possible). In all truth (not that there not some players than defeat it).

I am going to restate here. If anyone reading this can, please, point out other flaws in Mercenaries.

it’s a good thing, i need portraits for most of my mercs!

All true.

I also think the merc coin logic is kind of rigged. I’ve currently got 250-270 coins for a large handful of mercs who require 300 for me to buy them. On the other hand I’ve got 420-460 coins for a large handful of mercs who require 500 to buy them. For example, in the beginning, I got Diablo coins left and right, but the closer I get to actually earning him, the rarer they get. I’ve also slowed down on the rewards track because I can’t seem to beat Thaurissian, and maybe that’s where most of those coins came from. But I’m convinced the game is doing everything in its power to keep me from being able to actually buy a hero with coins.

Regular or Heroic?

If memory serves, I got to him with my typical comp and then ruined the boss fight with a nature group and a taunt. I will have to look it up again and get back to you if that was not the plan.

Another problem with mercenaries is that they throw it at HS players, hoping it would stick.

If it was a new game, they would have made it better, otherwise few people would have tried it.
By putting it in the HS client, they could release it in a bad state, knowing that some people would have still invested money in it, then in maybe one year releasing it in the final form (if this is the final form, then getting excess coins is a joke… imagine dusting HS cards to get dust that can’t be used anywhere)

Personally, no matter how many mercs there are, I still wouldn’t play this game because of the grind. I understand that some people enjoy it or finding strats for it, but I’m just tired of this kind of games.

I have played my fair bit of gachas, but those that sticked the most brought either really good stories or completely new gameplay, both of which Mercenaries lacks imo.

Again, this is my perspective on the matter, other people may have different problems with the game.

What reduces the chances? If you got a portrait, you got a portrait, the chances of getting a portrait don’t reduce your chances of getting a legendary.

I mean there are flex spots, and you can run hybrid builds. Most of the Murlocs fit into other comps.

It’s really not. I mean honestly, the biggest barriers are the actual content and time investment (i.e. tasks). The cost of the game isn’t even that relevant.

Having said that, I defended the initial release because most of the actual farming for legendary coins/content was fairly simple and easy. But ever since they started releasing frustrating content (while still linking it to rewards), it’s just not really fun anymore. I don’t need to spend half an hour getting all the way to Heroic Rend only to lose and get nothing for my time. And the fact that it is so frustrating makes it less fun.

If I got significant rewards for beating Rend after spending the time it takes to beat him, I’d probably think it was more worth it.

This is blatantly in your head.

Out of the problems with mercs, not enough mercs seems low on my list. Probably at least 30 mercs that see pvp play.

I don’t know what else to call a progression that had 250 coins the first month, 100 coins the second month, and 50 coins the third month. Or that the only mercs where I have over 400 are the ones that require 500, while all the ones that require 300 to buy I’ve got in the 200s.

As already noted I’m willing to allow for decreasing quest progress as part of the issue, and it could be simple RNG, but it’s a literal fact that the returns have diminished as I approached these goals.

Odds are just that you’re going to get coins evenly across all mercs. If you grind out the bounties for mercs you need you’ll get those last couple of dozen coins you need.
