Super strong early Battleground comps

as soon as i get close to 5k seems like the entire lobby has like full boards of minions, all of them 10/10s with 3 golden upgrades on what seems like the 4th round of the game

how is that even possible?

Does it seem or is it actually full board? Im confused.

Can you explain more in detail, what minions are you seeing? What heroes are you up against?

Because buying 1/1 that turns into 2 minions can fool the eye and by the turn 3 u almost have a full board.

Entire lobby has full minion board with 3 golden upgrades each? Highly unlikely.

I suspect you had bad RNG in one game where you got matched up against the strongest players consecutively which made you seem horribly underpowered. It happens.

But yes if you’re coming from 4k to 5k rating, you can hit a bit of a wall in terms of player quality. The players at 5k and above generally have optimal choices based on the Tavern offerings early in and transition well into midgame. If you are near 5.5k rating, remind yourself that you’re playing near the Top 1% of players. Some of these players can make beautiful lemon meringue pie out of lemons.

As long as we do not know what rating other players have, this statement is wrong because even at 5k you can face 3k or so. Same as at 4k you can get matched against 6k for example.

Wrong again. Being offered suboptimal choices in a tavern doesnt lead to optimal choices. Only to optimal choices out of bad choices. Its not a rocket science with so low ammount of optimal choices to learn it no matter rating you are.

This is the answer I guess. With current matchmaking its possible to face 2 players over and over again. So if you do not pay attention it might look like everyone is insanely strong where there are only 2-3 players insanely blessed by RNG.

Would like to point out that neither is wrong in the context that you read it.

The first statement reads that as your rating increases, you are statistically matched against stronger players. That’s all. Yes, you can get players weaker or stronger than you. But that equalises over time based on your rating. Generally, a higher rating would translate into higher skill opponents.

The second statement was on optimal choice based on Tavern offerings. I think you read it as the optimal choice regardless of tavern offerings, which would be incorrect as you have pointed out but it was not what was said.

it is weird fast the level of competitiveness changes.
in the span of 200 MMR points i go from top 4ing virtually every lobby to getting absolutely crushed and bottom 3ing every game.

there’s not escalation, it’s just… top 3 to bottom 3

Yeah. I have misunderstood you

Just as a side note, you are probably just settling into where your “true” MMR is.

My son plays (he’s 10) and every time he gets past 4500, he gets crushed back down to 4300 and then drifts in that range.

I do the same thing but at 6500.

He asked if I thought there was like a wall at 4500 that made it difficult to break through and get to 5k (his goal). He describes it exactly as you do (everyone has good boards, etc.). The funny thing is that’s exactly how the game feels at 6500 to me.

So we hit our own personal wall based on our skill. 4500 games melt in front of me. 5500 games are challenging, but I’ll usually pull it out. 6500 games feels like everyone has ds/poison/windfury on turn 10! I finally got back up to 6700 last night and then had two 8ths in a row! So it’s very similar what you describe. Low 6ks is consistent 1sts-4ths. 6700 is consistent 6ths-8ths, so my skill is probably right in the middle there.

It’s not. Stop being hyperbolic after one bad run.

Yes this is kinda true and I did experience the same as you in my own games. (for now peak 7200,dropped back to 6700 and now 7000 again)
i guess its around every 500 points that you see a difference in skill from your opponents.
Your own skill level has a variance of about 500 points as well (meaning that in general you should not drop lower then 500 points from your peak.)

The max skill level I would guess is somewhere between 8000 and 9000,definitly not higher.
If you reach ~ 8500 (on your own…) then i think you can play with most of the 9500 and 10k players without beeing at a disadvantage.
Maybe a small amount of players who play at a level 500-1000 points higher, players like bebe for example.

Yea i am stuck at 7k too. Sad. Hoping I can break through again.

You will I am pretty sure,i guess its first time for you as well playing this type of game. My own goal is set very high and I am not sure I can make it but I will keep try for as long as I feel I do improve.
Been around 7k for almost a week now but I do play 2 accounts, one f2p which is currently higher then my p2p, 7200 on eu.
It doesn’t feel like I am stuck yet but maybe if I am 7k for another 2 weeks it will lol.

Murlocs, always F murlocs. 4 people have murlocs but you cant get a beast to save your life. These devs are stupid as hell, This game makes me violently angry.

I also noticed that when I went on vacation and didn’t play my main (which was at about 4700 at the time over the course of maybe 60-70 games) because terrible internet connection, I watched a ton of vids at night and played on an alt which I got to about 5k-5200 over 10 days of vacay. When I got back home, I started playing my main again after that 10 day break and blasted through to 5ks like butter where I was I pretty hard stuck at 5k before that. Now my alt sits at about 6k (probably because only 2 heroes) and my main drifts between 6300-6900 (high). Looking to push to 7k, but I have to admit I really don’t like this patch so I might wait for some changes or just stick to alt for awhile. Personally, I thought the previous patch when junkbot was moved to t5 was a lot better.
