Stuck on restart when starting the game

I’m on iOS, iPhone 17, latest OS. I have the battle net app and am logged in there.

I have tried to start the game since Friday, i hadn’t played it in a while and was reinstallling it.

I am stuck on the first screen, which asks to restart the application. I tried a lot of things:

  • Restarting the app

  • deleting and reinstalling

  • Switch to mobile data

  • Logging off Game Center

  • Logging off battle net

Nothing works. Any pointers why?

Over the last 6 months, there have been a few bugs that cause iPhone users a problem.

One of those bugs involves the login being successful, but the game fails to load properly. For this issue, if you happen to see the option to hit the refresh icon, use it, which may trigger the game to load properly.

Thanks @Zee-1630. I’m stuck on the very first loading screen – there’s no button to hit or anything.

I’m correctly logged in to battle.net, in fact I’m launching Hearthstone from the Battle.net iOS app.

I see the sign “Closed” hanging from the tavern door, with the message “The game was unable to log you in through the Blizzard services. Please wait a few minutes and try again”

And below: Please restart the application.

I’ve deleted both apps and reinstalled them, starting with battle.net to be sure I was logged in, but nothing changes. I don’t have a VPN installed or anything. I played HS a month ago then deleted the app.

Any suggestions for things to test?

I would rule out connection issues by using someone’s WiFi connection instead of using your mobile cellular data connection.

If you know someone with Hearthstone installed on their PC or other device, you can try logging into your account with their device to rule out if it’s device problem or an account problem.

You could also try making a new account using an alternative email account to see if the new account has the same issue, if it does not, then the problem is linked to your original account.

Your issue also sounds like it could be caused by store or charge back issues. You can log in to manage your account through the forums to review your transaction history to see if there are any such possible issues. Players who have had their account banned or temporarily suspended can also encounter such problems. These kind of problems require opening a ticket to see if there is anyway to reinstate your account.

Let me and others know if you were able to solve your problem and how. Good luck!

Thank you! I have tried to start the game with Game Center deactivated and battle.net deactivated too, but no dice. Changing the email address that is passed on from the Apple Store is too cumbersome for me to try at this point.

I have logged into my account and I don’t see any charge or ban issues. I have contacted support but they just sent me to the forum.

progress.. I can log in and play HS from my laptop, but the app still refuses to connect.

So this points more directly to a bug on the iphone, since this is neither a login issue or a network issue (I’m connected through the same network and with the same credentials)

Alright. I assume you logged into your original account using your laptop by using the email address associated with your Apple ID as the account name to access and play the account.

Maybe. I would still try to create and log into a brand new Hearthstone account on your iPhone to see what happens. You can create the new account on your laptop first, or you should be able to create it on your iPhone.

You don’t need to change the email address associated with your Apple ID to switch to a brand new HS account on your iPhone. You just hit “Sign Up” and enter your name and birthdate to create a brand new account, using a different email address other than your original account to make the new account ID.

If the new account login is successful on your iPhone, then use the “switch account” option, which appears on the password screen before actually using the password. Then enter the email address as the ID for the account that you want to log into.

I play on all three servers on all of my HS accounts, so I spend a bit of time switching between multiple card collections or accounts.

Hey Zee,

Thanks so much for looking into this and your suggestions.

I’ve created a new account on the battle.net app, reinstalled HS, and started from my logged in account. No dice, I still see the same screen with the sign hanging on the tavern door “Closed – The game was unable to log you in through the Blizzard services. Please wait a few minutes and try again”. And under this, either “Tap anywhere to reconnect” or “Please restart the application”.

I don’t know what else to try here!

I am not sure what to suggest at this point, but I will attempt to clarify a few things. You have done the following:

1). Successfully logged in and played your original HS account on a laptop, which uses the same WiFi network as you use while trying to play on your phone. So this likely rules out a network problem and an account problem (your account is not banned or suspended). I would also try logging in while only using your cellular data plan, instead of using a WiFi connection.

2). You made second, brand new HS account, but you are unable to successfully login or play it on your phone, but I assume you can play the new account on your laptop without trouble.

I will point out that when I switch accounts or servers, and I get that screen that says “tap anywhere to reconnect,” the tapping of the screen always fails to load the game for me on my iPhone 16 Pro Max, so I have to force close the app by doing that L-shaped movement and dragging the app off the screen to close the app. Upon relaunching the app, the game with either load properly or it will take me to a login screen, if I had not already entered my email ID and a password. I only mention this, because tapping to reconnect never works for me after the last patch, but force closing and restarting the app does.

I also assume that you have restarted your device several times during your troubleshooting process, and that you have made sure all other apps have been closed out.

Others have also had similar issues with newer iPhones, as discussed in this post from September:

Some more reading for you to consider:

A quote from a year ago from another player:

“I was having this exact issue myself and I found a solution that worked for me; wanted to share to hopefully help you or anybody else dealing with this.

Instead of trying to sign in, sign up for a new account with either a throwaway email or something like that and then switch to your actual one. The idea is that if someone has offline unsaved progress and logs into an account, it doesn’t know which account’s progress to prioritize, so it won’t let you overwrite it. The problem is it considers skipping the tutorial to be progress worth keeping, so you have to make an account and then switch from it to your normal one

Hope this helps, I stayed up pretty late trying to figure this out because of how abhorrent blizzard designed this system.”

In closing, most players find a solution to login problems for newer iPhones, so I would not give up yet. Try switching to a different server, while using your phone, which involves selecting the Asia or Europe server, but do not actually use your password or log into the new server, but instead use the switch account option to switch back to the original server (you most likely made your original account on the Americas server) and try logging into it. This trick has helped some players.

Again, please let me know if (and how) you manage to solve this problem.

You’re a star, Zee, thank you. Testing a few things out here, I’ll keep you posted.

I’m on an iPhone 16 Max as well, I’ve tried deleting the app and reinstalling.

I’ll now try deleting battle.net and HS, and start with HS after a phone reboot. I’l use my throwaway account first, before switching to my usual one if things work out.

more soon..

[update]

I’ve tried a clean install on a rebooted phone, directly with HS without battle.net installed → didn’t work

I’ve installed battle.net and logged in with my throwaway account → didn’t work

i’ve switched the servers location on the desktop app (didn’t find a way to do that on the phone), then started battle.net on my phone, launched the game –> didn’t work

[update 1 Nov] Shame, but i’ve given up. I might try again the next time HS updates or that there is a new iOS.
