Star Bonus at higher ranks (20 chars)

So I don’t pay attention to this usually, but I am trying to get all of heroes to legendary rank for no other reason than it’s a personal goal.

I don’t play competitively only casually.

My question is this : I just made D5 with my choice of which hero I am using this month (I am not going to name which) and I noticed that before my last game I was D3 w/ 4x star bonus and 2x win streak which brought me to D5 - but now I have no star bonus at all. Do we lose the star bonus at D5 always (mind you I never paid attention before so this is possible) and I am playing on my PC atm if that makes a diff. I just want to know if it’s a “bug” on my side or is this how the star bonus is working now?

Thanks all for reading and explaining

The star bonus depletes as you rank up and your star bonus is dependent last months rank. If you get legend every month, star bonus is gone right around D5 always. Cant say for anyone who doesnt get legend because i dont know since they changed the whole star bonus system a few years ago.

Thank you! At least I know it isn’t something just buggy for me - that makes perfect sense

Happy to help.
Youre very welcome.

Super high legend players get 11 stars, so one star left D5 to Legend.

10% of players finished in legend get 11 stars. Other 90% get 10.
For ex, usually there are 25000 people in legend on EU, so finishing top-2500 in enough. I don’t think it is high

So inferring from this, players at lowest legend rank will get 11 stars bonus, not highest.

I only cared enough to read this far into it. Op was satisfied from the first response.

Dont matter. Im over it. Haha

I finished 3k last month US and only got 10 stars so top 10% makes sense. No idea why this guy went off because we added context to the OP’s question.

And we were both wrong.

I always get 11 star bonus, so i assumed all legend players get 11.

You get 10 star bonus so you assumed it was higher ranks.

Turns out i get 11 because i get legend and then play bgs the rest of the month so i end the month low ranking high mmr.

The more you know, lol

And i knew your “context” was wrong.

And if you get 11 stars, you have 1 extra star remained while going through D5-D1

No, bro, all Legend players get 10 stars. Top 10% of the ladder (ranked by MMR, not rank) get 11-star bonus, which means they still have x1 bonus from D5 to Legend

On the other hand, those games are way harder to win than the ones with 10-star bonus, so…

It’s worse than not having 2X at D5 because you also lose the win streak bonus at D5 which is huge and practically like having a 2X temporarily. The only way to make D5 too easy is to have the 11X star bonus but that’s not worth it if you only want dumpster legend because you have to grind so much to get it that you might as well grind for dumpster legend again.

I beg to differ

As a usual top 200 player, I’ve always found it much, much easier to maintain my top rank than to get back to it once I lose it due to lack of time for playing or unfavorable meta

That’s because you have many more opportunities for unfavorable RNG to make you stuck in one of the “gates” (parts of the ladder where the competition is most intense, hard to explain in a few words, but related to players hitting their skill ceiling and leaving the result of their games entirely to luck)

In fact, chances are you’ll get stuck at one of those “gates” every time you’re forced to grind back, so it’s much, much more cost-effective (in terms of effort or length of time playing) to simply maintain your 11-star bonus every month

This is the very reason why everyone who ever got their 11-star bonus knows intuitively that anyone could do it given enough time to play (and naturally, given the proper motivation). It’s because it would be a bloody miracle to end up there without getting stuck somewhere else even if you possess the skills needed to get there, but people get discouraged.

But you want to be top 200 in the first place. If someone wants to stay in dumpster legend every month, it doesn’t seem worth it to go for 11 stars because they’ll need so much grinding to stay in top 1K that they might as well grind a little to dumpster legend again.

@Carnivore & @Altair You are both missing the actual reason I posted the question.
I get it now, that it’s not that I lost my star bonus - I basically “used it up” - and I also see now that I lost win streak at D5 (as part of the “perk” for getting there.

Since I only play casually, and I have been playing for years. I don’t care about hitting “high” legend, as a matter of fact the only reason I care about legend at all is because I have set it as my new personal goal to do so in every class but DH and Warlock (I HATE and don’t play them, as I have said before) I don’t care to make the grind to high legend - I just wanted to understand why all the sudden I have neither Star Bonus nor any other bonuses for winning games (win streak) at D5

Once again I appreciate the responses and the clarification.

You don’t have a regular star bonus for winning games at D5 because your finish was somewhere below than the highest 10% of legend (on EU it means that you finished below ~2500) and you get 10 stars at the start of the new month.
You don’t have other extra bonuses (for win streaks) at D5 bc nobody has. I don’t know why this game is designed like that.
But I think that all ranks below legend are an example of bad design. Reaching those ranks means nothing nowadays bc you are always matched by your hidden mmr, not by your rank. While the legend number is at least connected with your hidden mmr, ranks below legend reflect nothing. They should just rework the whole system, give everyone their legend ranks according to mmr and delete all ranks below legend.

I mainly do it for the packs. I also like to play at a level that isn’t too easy for me, but I easily get that before high legend.
