Too often I see people counter complaints about toxic decks with, “Why didn’t you end the game by turn 7?”
Well, I’ve played aggro decks, and except for aggro vs. aggro matchups, they just aren’t fun. You either draw a nail biting aggro match, or it’s just a solitaire game where you either win by turn 7 or you probably don’t. And it’s mostly, “draw card, play card”.
Playing against aggro can be fun and nailbiting on my end, until the game actually starts to get good and then they abruptly quit.
I’ve said before that the playstyle is essential in most games, especially hearthstone, but it’s weird how aggro usually seems to be the strongest playstyle. It looks like the devs have tried, as aggro players often complain that there’s too much board clear now(yeah, they’re trying to get games to go to turn 10!), but even so, the highest win rate decks tend to be aggro.
I just don’t see the fun in it from the aggro end, unless the satisfaction of winning is all there is to the game for you.
You nailed why it’s obnoxious to play aggro (fast). The fastest decks are extremely sensitive to bad draws so you are often feeling oppressed by the RNG gods for the first 3 - 4 rounds.
As for why they still play them: they like to win.
Aggro needs to be, its cheap, its easy and it works, this is what new players need to succeed.
Otherwise u would have to apend a ton o money to get somewhere in the game.
the appeal of aggro is that it destroys low-skill control players, and also stops the game from lasting 30+ minutes, which I’m not sure anybody enjoys in today’s game, since games can be borderline infinite
I wouldn’t classify myself as an agro player - I think midrange/faster control is my favorite. But I’ve played my fair share of agro decks. The main appeal to me is not having to deal with things that I find “cheap and lame” that some decks do in later games. So you just kill them (or you don’t) but either way you don’t have to deal with eyeroll swings.
Aggro decks have less polarized matchups. If you play a control deck against some otk decks, you almost always lose. You just can’t kill them before they get their otk. (Unless they have abyssmal carddraw.)
With an aggro deck you have like min. 40% winrate in every match-up. With other playstyles, you may have 25% against some decks. Some people even instatntly concede against certain decks. For an aggro player, every match is worth playing. Even in a bad match-up, you can have godlike draw and win turn 3. This makes playing aggro less frustrating.
Aggro decks shrink the game and reduce skill level. You don’t need to worry about 30 cards but rather just the first 5 turns. Its appeal is its simplicity, its feast or famine nature allows less skilled players to win more consistently.
You dont need to plan for more than 4-5 turns, just drop whatever cards you were lucky enough to draw and let blizzards script play out. It also speeds things up so you can play can play more games and curve out the rng.
Yes and no. Some aggro decks take more thought than others. Like if you were to play discard warlock you need to understand when it’s a good time to play certain cards being that one misplay could cost you the game.
Pirate decks on the other hand is just play all your cards as fast as possible and hope they don’t wipe your board.
Fast games and the ability to multi task while you play Hearthstone.
Just shut down your higher brain functions and enjoy the ride, all that while you catch up on the news or watch a series.
I doubt most players of aggro, actually like aggro. It’s so obnoxious to pilot because it’s very sensitive to bad draw - compared to slower decks - that it’s used mainly because of the win rate or because there’s nothing else around.
And they are often cheaper to craft. I’ll give you that they are often lower skill cap (though not always (e.g. the fastest rogue decks are often hard for beginners)).
Aggro is the seems the strongest in Hearthstone because the gameplay loop of only being able to spend your mana on your own turn favors being proactive and aggressive. You want your opponents to respond to you instead of always reacting because when they have lethal waiting until it’s your turn so you can react to it is too late.
When I want to play aggro, it’s generally because of 3 reasons:
I just want to win and win fast to rank up
I don’t want to have to experience a combo or control deck popping off and doing crazy things. I just want a faster game
I don’t have time to play longer games (and want to complete quests)
That’s pretty much it. I’m mainly a Control or Combo player and I like games that have some deeper thought to them. Aggro is just mindless for the most part. But there are times where you just want to rank up fast or want to punish some of those crazy OTK decks by exposing their weakness in the early game.
I mean it seems silly to say as games that last 5 turns can’t have that much nuance right?.. but theres really a lot of nuance in playing a fast deck. Theres a lot more nuance in how to sequence the first 4 turns as an aggro deck than… Oh I’m just a removal deck I’ll play my removal card… or draw… or hero power and pass my turn.
I guess to answer the question a lot of the other deck strategies can be really boring as they dont do anything outside of assemble combo / play combo… or remove board… remove board… remove board and play some one card late game ‘ill eventually win now card’.
I can tell you the margin for victory as an aggro deck is very thin… but I can misplay all day long as some combo deck and not alter my winrate with much significance compared to if I misplay repeatedly as an aggro deck.
if Aggro says that your deck is too “grindy/greedy” you will see his “argument” when beats you in turn 4 (MTG) or 7 (HS)
Agro will teach you how to muligan, it will teach you how to trade and when to stop messing around and finish the game, it will teach you how many win conditions are “ok” to have in a deck and when are too redundant and too many, it will teach you what a “win more” card is.
Agro is your teacher; im a Control Played from ONE PIECE, MTG and HS.
i do enjoy Janks, Mid Range and Agro too.
my point is Agro is what defines what works and what not, “if your deck cant beat Red, its not a real Deck” thats a Line from MTG since the dawn of time, consider that when building a deck.
Aggro is boring and repetitive, as well as mind numbing. Once I hit legend I just play fun decks. I don’t care about hitting legend fast. I know I will get there so I am not in a hurry. I just like to slow down and enjoy my games and have some variety.
The appeal is in the fact that I can finish Legend on 3 servers in less time than the best player in the world can finish his 1st
Also, aggro vs aggro is FUN, FUN, FUN, literally what keeps me playing this game after all these years, as it’s the only part of the game where traditional board control (and trading mechanics) still means something
