Should I just buy packs from the newest expansion?

I was wondering since I don’t need any cards for my main deck, if I should just get packs from this expansion so I can craft other decks that are in the meta rn? (with gold)

If you don’t need cards right now, you might be better off saving your gold for next expansion and buying more of those packs. Unless you’re bored and want to try a new deck, at least.

Do you know when that new expansion is?

Have you gotten 10 packs of all of the legal sets? If not, start buying them one at a time until you get the guaranteed legendary for each set. You’ll get one for sure in the first 10 packs.

No official announcement yet, but each expansion lasts about four months, so the next one should be out sometime in late July or early August.

what are legal sets?

Hm well I dont think I bought each type of pack yet. So I need to buy 10 packs of each of the “legal sets”?

Standard legal. This year and last.

Don’t buy ten at once. Buy one at a time so you don’t get more packs than you need/want.

I would wait for those battle ready decks. for $20.00 you could choose to buy a particular class meta deck which usually contains 3+ legendary cards and bunch of epics.

With gold make sure you buy 10 packs in each expansion or 1 at a time until you get a legendary. The rule is automatic legendary in the 1st 10 packs 100% guarantee of each expansion. It could be in the 1st pack you open or the 10th or anywhere between.

Do the current standard expansions first then the wild expansions.

There are currently 4 expansions in standard = 4 legendary’s for 4,000 gold or less

There are 12 wild expansions + classic = 13 legendary’s for 13,000 gold or less.

After that buy Barrens / next expansions, as those are in standard for the next 2 years.

Or save gold for the miniset (probably 2000 gold)

If I have an uncraftable legendary from an expansion that means I got it from a pack correct? That would help me remember which packs I got a legendary from.

Also which ones are this year and last? The ones that haven’t rotated out for sure, but which pack does the last year packs end on that site?

Is it really worth it to buy wild if I don’t plan on getting another deck there? (I already have secret mage to play in wild)

If you have a uncraftable legendary that means they were probably given last expansion or in this one, like Silas Darkmoon. I’m general, free legendaries are uncraftable.

The legal expansions for standard this year are Scholomance, Barrens and the next two.

@topic: Expansions now Will come with a mini expansion mid-way. Last time the whole mini-expansion was buyable with 2000 Gold, you should save for that.

So I should save 2000 gold for the mini barrens pack?

I’d say you should save Gold, in general.

With then new core set, unless you wanna play wild/classic, you can either buy cards from the current expansion or nothing else.

As a new player you’ve come at a good time. You have the entire Core set for free just by leveling up your hero … so the first order of business is to get each hero leveled and then you’ll get all the basic card for each class as well as all the Core cards for the set. Bingo.

The next thing you should do is SAVE YOUR GOLD until you have about 8,000 to 9,000 gold in the bank for the next expansion. This will allow you to buy 80-90 packs … which will get you all the Commons, all the Rares, 16-18 Epics, and 4-6 Legendary cards from the new set. This is is (generally) more than enough to get you to 85% of the cards in the expansion and is plenty to play the game with.

Any extra gold you get should be banked to get whatever mini-set comes out between now and the next expansion in July.

Once you have that 8-9K in the bank for the next set, then you can start looking backwards. Always start with the most recent expansion and buy 1 pack at a time until you get the first Legendary card (which will drop in the 1st 10 packs of any expansion). Once that Legendary drops go backwards to the next expansion and repeat until you have done this for each expansion that is currently in the STANDARD rotation.

Then stop and just save gold going forwards and repeat the 8000-9000 gold process for every set going forwards. You will set yourself up so you will be good to play Standard without problems for as long as you wish and you won’t have to spend any cash to do it.

If you want to goose your gold savings a bit then you can spend 20 bucks to get the Tavern pass. This isn’t necessary, but does let you save up gold a bit faster.

Would it be smarter to buy packs for the cards you need in a class that you will play? For example next expansion there is a new mage deck thats meta. If I want to play that mage deck but don’t have cards from any of the previous expansions for it would I just buy packs that I need cards from?

Currently Hearthstone does not sell “Class packs”. The closest you can get to that is to get the free starter deck in the class that you like, and then buy one of the Meta Ready decks that they are offering in the next patch (again for the class you want).

You can occasionally get Class Packs by doing the little adventure games they have in the Single Player menu … but you will only get 1 class pack per applicable adventure so it’s not really a way to build up a specific class collection (though it won’t hurt obviously).

So no … there’s not really a way to target a specific class at the moment. It’s one of Hearthstone’s few remaining flaws really. One day they will perhaps add all the class packs to the store. Until that time comes, players need to aim broadly.

In the scenario you are describing, your best approach would be to follow the advice I gave above. You will have a lot of duplicate Commons and Rares that you will disenchant after opening your 80-90 packs. This will give you somewhere around 2,000 dust (more sometimes). You would use that dust to craft any ‘missing’ cards that were important in whatever deck you wanted to play. You’ll have to be careful with crafting and spend it only on stuff that’s important though. Crafting dust from disenchanting extra cards is how you’ll reach backwards if necessary.

The point will be to keep looking forward rather than backwards though. It is much much much much easier to “keep up” by focusing on the current and future expansions. It is much much much MUCH harder to “catch up” by focusing on past expansions. Don’t play that game. Just save for the sets that are coming out and eventually the past stuff will rotate out of the game and you won’t have to bother with it.

I was referring to buying packs from past expansions if I have a card that I’m missing from that expansion. For example if I want to play the meta mage deck next expansion, but I’m missing a card from darkmoon faire then would it be better to buy a few packs of darkmoon faire to get that card OR would it be better to use your method of using the dust to craft it?

Buying packs hoping that you’ll get a specific card (particularly a Legendary card) is always going to be a very low return on your investment. If your only purpose is to get that one card so you can play one specific deck then you will always be better off doing some targeted crafting using your dust supply.

However…

If your goal is to build a larger collection then buying packs is a better approach. You will get a variety of cards from a bunch of different classes that you can put into a multiple decks. These will be cards you can always use in Brawls, Wild mode, or other events.

Verbum Sapienti… It takes about 20-25 packs to get all the Commons from a set. It takes about 60 packs to get all the rares. It takes 200+ packs to get all the Epics. It will take 250 or so packs to get all the Legendaries. That’s if you get an average return, and rely entirely on random chance when opening packs and dust your extras to craft along the way.

As you can see … relying on chance alone to get you all the Epics & Legendary cards you want from an expansion can be expensive. It’s best not to chase that unicorn unless you’re a Whale. However, you can get all the Commons, Rares, and a solid chunk of Epics (about 20) and a few good Legendaries for only 80-90 packs. That will take you to over 85% of the collectible cards in a set and it’s more than enough to generally worth with and give you a solid deck (or two!) for every class. You won’t have everything, but you’ll have enough.

You can see from this that trying to work backwards (“catch up”) is an expensive proposition … even if you only focus on the Standard format. There are 3 expansions from last year that you’d need to “catch up” on … and even if you only did 80 packs for each of those sets then that’s 240 packs to buy. So it’s a whole lot easier to just “keep up” by starting with the current set and preparing to get 80-90 packs in the NEXT set rather than trying to catch up with past sets. Again … unless you’re a Whale with lots of money to spend. For people who aren’t Whales, it makes far more sense to keep up with the current set and only go backwards for single cards here and there by crafting.

I am not sure about that. I think that if a person doesn’t have the commons and most of the rares from a set, then it is better to spend some of those 2000 in that before going for the mini set.
