Roping from turn 1 but not doing anything, why?

Why do people not do anything at all? I can see them mousing over cards, so they aren’t disconnected or afk. I tried roping back (and even doing something every other turn to make it take longer, and healing them and myself through as much attrition as possible) to see if they’d concede or suddenly start playing, but nope. So I don’t think they are trying to manipulate mmr or get free wins because they’d get more wins by just playing. It’s not in response to my netdeck or card back because I don’t use card backs and they start doing it before I play any cards. I don’t think it’s a problem with their client because why wouldn’t they just exit and come back? I don’t care that they are doing it really, it’s a free win, but I am really curious about why they do it. Like, whats the psychological reasoning behind it? I’d prefer to hear from someone that actually does this or someone in the mental health or sociology field. I know that it’s probably that they’re just idiots, but even idiots have some causality to their thinking, right?

Probably just getting the “play 3 games a X classes” quests done as lazily as possible.

then why not just concede?

it gives them a feeling of dominance over you. during that game, it’s within their control what you can do, whether you can play the game or have to wait around doing nothing.

so it’s not like they’re wasting their time as well because they put it to “good” use making up for whatever they need emotional compensation for.

it’s similar with drawing out a game that has lethal on board. they know they can’t lose the game anymore because it’s their turn and they have lethal, so they take as much time as possible to show you that they’re about to kill you. forcing you to watch yourself get killed by them gives a feeling of dominance.

that said, I have yet to meet a player that does any of this for the whole duration of the game. when I meet them I always play as quickly as possible (while taking enough time to think through my plays of course) and after 2-4 turns they usually resume normal game play. they can’t assert dominance if the other isn’t affected by it after all

Because conceding, at least too early, doesn’t count for the quest.

Sometimes players actually have a tough decision on turn 1 if they are super serious about winning.

I knew a game store owner who could play at the cash register and would sometimes take a long turn because he was helping a customer (probably not the case now)

It’s not always the same thing. I normally am there at the start of the game but occasionally I hit play and run to the bathroom while it finds a match. Or put some water on boil for tea or grab something to eat.

why not pass the turn then? why rope?

That’s the question. Normally they’re roping because they queue into a game and afk until it’s over. Did you find multiple people doing this while being certain they’re mousing around, or just one?

but they do it for the whole game and don’t play anything.

they don’t do anything. it can’t be that their just thinking or they would think, then do something.

please read my whole post before posting, i said they are mousing over cards

The same reason trolls everywhere do things. To get a rise out of people. It doesn’t matter whether they actually get a reaction from you or not, they know roping is annoying and therefore they rope to annoy people.

like 2 out of 5 have been mousing over. also, one factor may be that it happens in casual play.

Some people invest much time to be jerks. They wont response to hello, only if they manage to kill you they say hello or thank you. Hate these idiots

Some ppl disconnect, some ppl lose on purpose to lower their MMR.

I’d say that’s probably a factor. I encounter infinitely more ropers, BMers etc in Casual than on the ladder. Folks might fling emotes on the ladder, but they almost never do so at the expense of lengthening the match.

Roping on turn 1 probably means bad connection, playing on mobile and taking forever to connect etc. Roping all game is either a) doing it on purpose or b) actually thinking turns ahead in a skill intense deck. Judging by the current decks in the meta, it is fair to assume that option a. is the most likely

I’ll rope against every DH. Taking one for the team and keeping one less DH in the pool for matches as long as I can.

When i have to do my quests fast, i usually go to “brawl”, choose a class and start a game.
Then i skip every turn as fast as possible, i say “well played” and so on.
Some people are just… i don’t know? even if they have a full board, full hand, can’t play cards, they just drag the game on, leaving me on 1 health on purpose and then waiting for the rope during their turn.

Some people are just psycho, (no he wasn’t completing a quest “play some…” because of full hand+full board+no cards played in 10 turns? i don’t remember).

I noticed that it’s faster to use another method: start a game, then leave (so you will waste 2 minutes of your opponent life, but at least the rope will become automatic after turn 1). People usually win as fast as possible these games where i don’t play, rather than games where i skip my turn and wait to die… logic 1000, but that’s how it works.

What class are you playing? Rogue, DH, or priest? That could be part of the problem.

Roping every turn without playing anything is an attempt to make you concede to get easy wins. If youre playing the above classes, they might be doing it out of spite. Rogue And DH is strong right and the matches can be drawn out really long with priest and rogue, and priest providing potential record Long matches.

When I know I’m going to lose in the first couple rounds, I Just play nothing and hit the Next turn Button, but never rope. Can’t concede because I wont get credit. I dont play a lot of tier 1 decks, but I face them a lot in casual. They utterly destroy me, even if I have a good hand and they have a terrible one. It’s just a waste of my brain trying to win at something I never will. I am aware that some games can sway based on bad decisions by my opponent, but with the state of DH, you can make plenty of mistakes and still win.
