So one persons hot take. I’ve enjoyed Battlegrounds. However, I’ve felt like so many of my battle are effectively predetermined by Red Whelp that it’s stopped being fun which has caused my to slow down how much I play.
The fact is I get this is a super heavy RNG game. However, when a tier one minion just blows out your Juggler or your minion that gives Beasts the +3 it’s just not fun and you lost the game before it even begins.
For me at least, Red Whelp makes Battlegrounds unfun. It’s never fun when a tier six minion targets your key minions but it’s tier six and a serious tech choice at that point. Red Whelp just blasts your key minions from turn one and it’s pretty auto decides games.
I get your not going to change it nor am I demanding anything. However, it’s just some personal feedback. To me Red Whelp makes Battlegrounds unenjoyable. To me seeing a Red Whelp go off and knowing that no matter how I position my minions or how many taunts I have the game was over before it began is not fun.

The randomly determined combat randomly determined a winner.
What’s the problem?

Sure if it was truly random. But it’s not designed to be truly random. The whole point of Taunt is to protect key minions. Using Taunt is supposed to be a strategic decision. Do you Taunt your Ratpack to protect your Packmaster and ensure you get at least some buffed rats? Or do you not Taunt it in the hopes your Ratpack dies before your Packmaster with maximum space on the board?
I get it Team Five is obsessed with RNG, it’s no accident that they have effectively repackaged Yogg more then any other card. RNG can be fun and is clearly a big part of Battlegrounds. When RNG completely overrides strategic choices then it tips into not fun.

It is ironic you blast it for sniping Juggler when Juggler does the same exact thing. In fact it snipes red whelps as well. It requires you to go dragons which may not be in the cards for you and isn’t as snowball as Juggler but has an instant effect which makes it powerful early and can be effective late if it hits the right target(s) like Juggler.
It’s very effective if you can get 1-2+ and just recruit dragons and go from their. It can be replaced late if things change. It’s good. It’s meant to be good. We needed new low tier minions and needed dragons and I personally feel it makes it interesting.
So when your Juggler(s) is/are sniping minions left and right and you manage a perfect set up where they’re protected and you have demons spawning demon tokens which suicide for 1 dmg + Jugglers which can be 3-6 multiple times, it’s all fair but when another minion gets the same type of ability but less snowball in favor of instant one time use, its a problem?
I think the real problem with battlegrounds is becoming board space. It’s annoying when you have a perfect board and you have to sacrifice that to try to ramp up with double battlecries, deathrattles, minions that summon minions, your beasts get +/+, etc, just to lose power to a combo that you don’t have space to perform. Brann isn’t bad, it is 2 slots and it actually helps you manage board space by choosing 5 minions to buff, Brann that increases buffs, and 1 free slot to buff with. But extra DR’s that can’t trigger cause there isn’t board space and in order to get them to trigger in the correct order is almost impossible, same with buffing beasts unless you hit the right sequence in the right order, same with demons / jugglers, same with summoning extra minions, and even with mechs it can be difficult to decide to sacrifice your other minions in favor of setting up the right sequence to trigger divine shields and buff your mechs that typically die out of sequence and yes this and juggler add to that problem.
I’m beginning to feel like tiers 5 and 6 should add a board slot OR there needs to be a free sacrificial / side slot that doesn’t add to your board but either is a permanent side slot for brann type minions that is only their for the effect or just add more space so that we can snow ball more effectively in late rounds to compete with things like murlocs with poison/divine shield and a million stats.
Embrace the chaos. It needs to be more outrageous and more out of control to unlimit the possibilities because that’s really what this mode is all about.

Just for clarity if you go through my old posts I’ve been incredibly critical of the role Jugglers play in Battlegrounds.

I just had a hilarious game where I went jugglers and against one specific dragon player, the opening 4 salvos of red whelps went straight on my jugglers (a 3/3 and 6/6), not once, twice, but three times. Needless to say all of my losses was to that specific dragon player. If any of them had instead went on the other side of my board it would have started triggering my juggler salvos, but nope; perfect snipes in three matches. Would have like to have taken at least one match, but hey when the game wants you dead it wants you dead.

keep in mind, they need to hold onto dragons to make it work, at least 3 to take out a juggler
the balance of the game is upset so things will not be a same
also its beta, so nothing is set in stone, one possible change could be to reduce its health to 1, or have it deal dmg equal to its atk, so 1 dmg unless buffed, at that point some heroes would have the advantage, but some hero powers already do things like that
i say make it a 1 star 1/1
Im fooling around with ysera lately in BG.
I dont tier up the tavern and try farming the whelp. The stupid taunt dragon keep appearing. At best, I only got three golden whelp and a normal one.
Gets blown up at late game by many other stuff. But its fun seeing them roasting stuff left and right.
