Thank you team 5 for all your hard work and creativity. I don’t think everything was a hit (like quickdraw), and balance is a little wack but otherwise great job and I am enjoying this expansion. I’m really hyped for the mini-set to mix things up as well. Thank you creators and developers for the many hours of entertainment.
The only criticism I really have is that I wish every class had a legendary treasure. I was so sad when I made a fringe excavate druid deck and finally got to 4 digs and got nothing.
Otherwise it’s great and having fun. Happy holidays!
its rare but I agree with everything Neonghost just said.
Recently its beginning to feel like I cant go a single match in duels against a lock or mage without seeing the first 10 rounds being spammed to death with excavates. I finally got to 9 wins as Omu using a dragon themed deck plan and it was working so well, but then I faced a warlock and 2 mages in a row. Never stood a chance.
I really just loathe seeing how uneven they made excavate. Druid and shaman got nothing but the 2 options and thats it. Lock and Mage? unlimited it seems.
I have to agree as well. The excavate is sometimes complete unreal. You play a minion, get a card that summons a minion, that summons a minion as well. I mean what?
Oh you’re DK, let’s give you 0 cost excavate. Mage? 1 cost Titan legendary sure. Warrior? Oh here take 2 more 8 cost minions for free. And don’t get me started on pre-nerf Warlock snake.
Then you get Highlander. The cost of cards that goes into that… And always the same. Oh astalor, oh ignis, oh another titan. Yeah super original dude.
I play ranked. Face a priest. Won the game but had to deal 175 damage to his face to win. I know because I’ve got the slugfest achievement. The game lasted 27 minutes. If you call that a win, then call me Pyrrhus.
I like the concept of excavate but the execution is quite poor imo. Some of the basic rewards and almost all the legendary treasures are a really lazy design. Discover a free 2,3,5 mana drop is not something very interesting to begin with and, barring the Azerite Snake (the only interesting treasure), the treasures are ‘summon two 8-drops’, ‘get a random Titan that costs 1’, ‘Get 4 random spells’*. I would have preferred these legendaries to do something strong and flavorful like the Snake does.
Mage treasure could have filled your hand with 0-cost random spells like the Scorpion did. Synergizes with Rommath and casino cards.
Warrior treasure could do something like reduce de cost of Taunt minions in hand and deck by 3. Might have made taunt warrior viable for the first time ever.
Rogue treasure could have been some sort of coin generator or could equip a high durability weapon with ‘immune while attacking’ to support the weapon archetype (no fear of miracle shenanigans).
That’s just some quick ideas, there could be a million options. The treasures they came up with are just lazy and don’t make much sense.
I just went 4 matches in a row, all of them had a Reno come out of nowhere to dominate me into just auto quitting. This isnt even duels… this is standard… I want this Reno abolished… made a controlled substance and contraband as well as makes the current owners all pariahs that arent allowed to open another pack despite how much money they try to spend… take all their gold and just give it to jackpot machine that someone crashed into for it to payout then and there to the unlucky one that is now unconscious and covered in cold coins jackpot flowing all over them.
Excavate follows the tradition of c’thun or galakrond.
You have to play particular cards to power up/reach towards an eventual big reward.
The excavate rewards are arguably less powerful than a big enough c’thun or galakron hero, but the rewards from the other excavate cards are arguably better, especially if you the random treasure happens to be just the card you need.
Excavate packages also feel like they can fit with other packages and win cons better. Mages can still run Sif. DKs can run plagues. Locks can pick and choose from their various removal or late game. Rogues can run concoctions or more burgle or miracle or their wishing well stuff.
From a “are people using it” or “does it allow for different deck build” standpoint, I think excavate hit the right spot.
Whether excavate is “fun” or not is more of a personal taste.
I only play wild but i think they hit the nail leaving paladin in charge of standard meta, those kids have to learn to deal with aggro…
In the case of Reno im going to give them my vote of confidence hoping that the same thing as with Theotar dont happen again, nerf a card that gave you a chance against ultra-toxic decks like, back then, pillager rogue just because standard couldnt handle disruption…
I’ve always loved highlander decks. In wild, and now in standard.
Boring you say ? Sure, that’s your opinion, a lot of people have different view.
And why didn’t you answer my question ? Name me the decks you currently play and I will explain why the decks are either boring, solitaire, or overpowered crap. I too can play this little game of yours.
Then it won’t matter if Reno is overpowered in the extreme, you won’t care. It’s not even worth discussing.
People that like Reno decks are typically people I don’t like, so at least now I know.
Because it doesn’t matter what anyone else plays, Reno is a joke that shouldn’t be in the game. Unilateral and unconditional full board clear that locks the opponent out of the game for a turn after it’s played is straight bullcrap. There’s no defending that. None.
How so ? I play everything. Except hyper aggro decks, because those boring and the decisions don’t matter much, just go face and hope for the best.
So no duplicate is not a condition ? If it wasn’t a drawback, you would see a lot of highlander decks with no payoff cards. And as we know, that doesn’t happen. Because no duplicates is a pretty big drawback.
I agree that Reno is a bit overtuned, but so are many other cards in the game.
I guarantee you, if you name me the decks you’re playing, I will accurately name you cards that are overpowered in said deck.
If you want cards like Reno to be nerfed because you hate highlander decks but at the same time don’t want your shiny fun overpowered toys to be nerfed, that’s hypocrisy.
Reno, hyper aggro (paladin pre-nerf, treant druid now), poor balancing, OP and toxic cards, no design philosophy outside of making “cool/fun” cards, no concept of how cards interact with each other = Team 5
Excavate Warlock is the most fun I have had in this game in years. I think the mechanic is quite interesting.
I do not get the dislike of Reno, though. It is appropriately powerful for the deck restrictions required. The board restrictions are good in so much as they require planning and thought, which is good for the health of the game.
I think that a couple of the excavate cards could use a bit of a nerf. A 5 mana 6/5 rush seems a bit too much for the cost. Heck, the 2 mana is a puny 1/1, so why does the 5 mana card get such a big power bump? At most I think it should be 4/3 given that excavate is already a powerful effect.
