Why does Battlegrounds punish players hard af? In the last 3 games I’ve played I got 4th place twice, and only earned +11 points when I was eliminated. On another game I played, I got 6th place and lost 50 points. Why is the punishment for not making it into the top 4 make you lose more points than what you earn?

Yup BG;s is ALL ABOUT MONEY and if you are not gonna give it to them you can gtfo…
You win about the same for 1st as you lose for 8th. Same with
2nd - 7th
3rd - 6th
4th - 5th.
So it makes sense that you lose more at 6th than you gain at 4th.
It also depends on the mmr of other players in the lobby. If they generally have a lower mmr than you, you lose more and gain less. If they generally have a higher mmr than you, you lose less and gain more.
