Protoss Mage Effing sucks

It used to be good when it was called ‘elemental lamplighter’ mage… but people threw such a huge fit they nerfed colossus 1.0 and printed a slower colossus 2.0 with a more boring conditional a few months(?) later. This is the exact deck people wanted.

I mean killing off 20 minions is incredibly slow so you can just do ceaseless / combo… But the problem is once you get the wisp counter up to 7 you boardlock yourself.

Ceaceless to do 20 damage?

We are really going far with the incredible slow combos to do absolutely nothing today aren’t we?

This metagame has so much armor that you should not count anything under atleast 40 damage as an OTK.
If it is to think in BS that does not work we already have protoss mage and it atleast clears the board in the process.

I mean I didnt design the card… I dont think people are considering how slow its going to be to kill off 20 minions… thats like 3 full boards that have to die. It looked like a bad card to begin with and the whole package just seems like a worse wildfire (was that that hero power card) mage.

The only mage deck I like is no minion mage so I’ll keep playing that… I was hoping they’d continue some draenei support so the arcwing card could see play but so much for that… abandoned like so much else in the game.

It will not be slow and will probably be able to be played on curve. Whisprider will really help with that.

The thing really is that the pay off is just not a pay off. The “mage players” of nowadays are really easy to impress nowadays.
You just write some big number and they not even think on what type of board it will be played.

As a buildaround this card is mediocre at best. In fact it is so mediocre that people should be looking what type of combos they can pull off with the hero power rather than looking foward to use it.

If you want the “pill” about this card it is that 20 is a small number for that.
30 would probably be a balanced number but only god knows how much people would be playing mage if they don’t made the cards utterly underpowered.

The warriors are probably way worse. When Reno was nerfed for the 3rd(?) time and their reno decks were bad they still had a huge play rate (talking about a few months back).

Mages are often played by smart people which means they get this isn’t World of Wacraft so you don’t have to grind before you can play a different class.

PS we can see it in the numbers, when Big Spell mage was nerfed recently: the play rate of mage dropped dramatically which means they switched class.

Well…

I think they never nerfed a deck so spectacularly as they did with Big spell mage to be fair.

There was probably nerfs that hit harder but none was screaming “we hate you” as hard as hitting almost a third of your deck worth of cards.

And yes. I sure they did hate that deck. It was a deck made with the scraps they gave here and there that people found a diferent way to put together that was not what they wanted you to play.
That in a era of closed packages and artificially balanced decks is a insult for who believe in the Second.

Quasar rogue. It didn’t even have a win rate and almost nobody was playing it. Someone in the Dev team really hated losing to it.

This was people utterly quitting the game after playing. I can see why that one happened.
If you insult the money out you go.

Nope, hard control and value metas are the best metas. And since your claim has no supportive evidence, my contrary opinion rebukes yours.

I think the highest amount of games I ever played of one deck without ever changing it was Dragon Warrior in the AV expansion. Almost 250 games and a near 70% winrate.

But yes, otherwise I rarely get near 100 games with any given deck.

Protoss mage looks fun on paper, but gets overwhelmed by almost anything. You have to play at least 10 protoss spells spells to make Colossus worth a damn, and even then, the opponent has most likely killed you before you even get 5 out or they have racked up enough armor that they just chuckle at your colossus. Pretty poorly-implemented, even Priest is objectively better and Protoss Druid gets to be aggressive with its play style. Just play elemental mage, better chance of you actually scratching your opponent before you get blown up.

how can you survive without freezing spells

the only way i can make it late game is running soulfreeze and 1 blizzard with artist to tutor them

and of course droping a mantle shaper early game …i have to run synthetise to have extra minions in hand or my oppoennt will have higher chances to use viper to kill my collosus

Yeah there’s just no time. I find it very useful to look for new decks when they have at least 60 samples because I noticed that’s the breakpoint that the win rate starts stabilizing (or at least 80 (and I don’t mean it’s a good sample for looking details like card mulligan impacts but only for overall total win rate)). Sometimes even fewer than 80 samples might be very useful because I may not be looking for win rate but for ideas of augmenting an existing deck by using own judgement.

My most enjoyable climb this month has been with Protoss Mage, I’ve steamrolled Warriors and Shaman’s while eating dirt against Druid and Rogue.

Yeah Protoss Mage was my favorite deck this expansion. Too bad it never wins
