Can a new player go wrong picking a class to start with?
Would anyone be so kind as to give me a brief overview of what kind of playstyle the following classes have?
Mage
Hunter
Shaman
Warrior
Warlock
At first glance, the above classes have all peaked my interest.
The classes have an overall âfeelâ and a theme to them that they are supposed to have and that they have more or less stuck to since the beginning, but the details have changed from time to time over the years. Right now Shaman does very poorly in ranked mode, while Warlock is also suffering. Warrior and Hunter are doing really well, but they have very limited options for competitive decks (Rush Warrior and Face Hunter respectively). Mage is kind of in the middle, itâs okay, but not great at the moment.
As for what kind of playstyle they tend to have, Mages have some of the best spells in the game and many of their minions are based around finding, buffing, or supporting their spells. Mages have a lot of direct damage abilities, but not very much healing or big minions.
Hunters have lots of direct damage abilities, especially ones that target the enemy player, which makes them the best class at rushing down the enemyâs health.
Shamans (in theory) have powerful aoe damage spells and strong minions that they can get out early thanks to their overload mechanic. They tend to focus on burning down the enemy quickly and using big bursts of damage to finish them off.
Warriors tend to be a very straightforward class. They aim to build big threats while building up armor and then charging down the enemy at the right moment. Currently they are the kings of building huge minions that rush onto the field to swing control of the board in your favor and destroy the opponentâs health. They also have the incredibly fun control warrior archetype that focuses on removing threats in the early game and then destroying the enemy with high value cards.
Warlocks in general are built around sacrificing their resources to gain advantages. They have decks based around destroying their own hp or discarding cards in their hand or deck. They can sacrifice their own minions to buff their board or damage the enemy. In standard their only viable deck focuses on stalling out the early game and grinding the enemy into dust with Jaraxxus and infinite infernals.
I recommend focusing on warrior if you can build the rush warrior deck. Itâs very strong and really fun.

I was doing some reading and playing after originally posting this. The control deck defintiely has my attention and, from what I read (and what your wrote), this is longstanding warrior play.
I will check out the rush warrior deck. One thing Iâve quickly realized is Iâd much rather lose because I didnât get enough out to get to late game vs losing because my minions just fizzled and I wasnât able to keep up with the powerful minions on the other side of the board in the late game â that situation bugs me for some reason.

Yeah, I also hate running out of steam as aggro. You just end up playing your top deck and feeling like you will inevitably lose.
I did well with âHunterâ.
Yes. A common mistake is to pick one class and decimate the rest. You can prefer one class but do not disenchant cards for others.
