Any advice (aside from pay to play) on passing the apprenticeship to unlock and cards I have in my deck?
Its near impossible because I don’t have access to any strong cards and i’m constantly matched up against a ranked person who has significantly better decks than me.
I heard you can skip the apprenticeship but you don’t get any of the rewards… so it sounds like there’s a no win situation unless I finally get lucky and paired with someone who is also trying to pass the apprenticeship…
This has to be among the worst new player experiences in gaming, for sure. Just getting to the free deck is a terrible slog. There are people playing expensive T1 meta decks and stomping you as you climb out of the I have no cards ranks. It’s seriously not fun.
Check the solo adventure tab of the main menu, then go to practice to level up the classes you’re interested in playing vs the innkeeper AI, that should open the core cards for you, it is a slower experience gain than vs a real player but it’s good to start learning the ropes and having acces to a big “free” part of the collection.
If you have unlocked the core set already do and reroll quests to move on the rewards track to get gold eventually there are some new player guides floating on the internet and You can check TrumpHS on youtube, He has a current ongoing series on a new free account trying to make it to legend.

- Try out the “Core” class recipes. As long as you’re level 10 in the class (which isn’t hard to reach; you still gain xp even if you lose a game - you gain xp by killing enemy minions, playing cards and winning), you’ll have the full Core deck available.
- Once you find whichever of the Core class recipes seems the best for you, look through the other cards you own and see if you have any cards you want to add to the deck to improve it. For example, the Core deck might have a vanilla 3 mana 3/3 and you might have a 3 mana 3/4 so you can put that in instead.
Normally, there would be websites with good budget decks to link for you but the Core set is completely new so I doubt there are any updated websites out there with good guides for new players.
That said, you could check out some of these budget decks:

I do try to invite friend to HS,
he is right now rank 32, after few days
he gives up
me explained that is free deck after those levels and more to come because core set did not help
I was helping him making first deck to play but he misses free core cards - that’s upsetting
we did replace those with some crap neutrals but honestly one of best cards are blocked in core set by leveling
yes it’s problem
also early on we did encounter new/old legendary, epic cards ( probably those people did buy packs to use proper cards ) so he was stomped early on
in the end :
everyone should get all core cards from right away, not just part of it
also it’s chore to play from 40 to 1 to get free deck to play
I agree. It must be so miserable playing with… whatever is available at level 1 of each class.
There is the option to skip apprentice but it’s really better to go through it.
In apprentice, you never lose stars so just concede if you think you can’t win. Learning how to concede and move on in an unwinnable situation is important in this game. Don’t take losses personally. Not every deck is created equal.
Hs will always match you up against players with legendaries you don’t have. It’s literally a patented mmr mechanic. You might be playing the free to win version but I’d guess you’d need to spend considerably more time than 2 years (the amount of time before cards rotate) to have the complete collection of cards in standard. You’re purposefully put at a disadvantage when you’re only playing free. Somewhere out there a corporate suit dude is reading your post with dollar signs in his eyes because the pressure to spend real money on the game through bs mmr mechanics is working.
