Onyxia bug/interaction

When you don’t have enough health to pay for a card costing Health instead of mana, the game does not allow you to be able to play that card, as you would die. Agamaggan, the warlock legendary from Emerald Dream, allows you to bypass this, since it spends your opponent’s health instead of mana on your next card, being a positive thing for the player who plays it. Arisen Onyxia changes health spending cards to gain max health instead, but you are not allowed to play any of these cards if your total health is under the “health cost” of the card, which is detrimental to the experience of playing the card, as you may have 8 health, but cannot gain the 16 from both Onyxia cards, losing the game. This interaction prevented me from getting 6 wins in pre-release brawl, as I expected them to change the interaction to allow the play of these cards if Onyxia was on the battlefield for me.

Exact same thing happened to me. I had 8 health left, and was expecting to be able to heal 16, but it wouldn’t let me play the two 8 drops I got. Lost immediately.

Messed up my 6-0 run too, if that makes you feel any better ^^
I’m don’t think this interaction is intended, I hope they fix it soon.

Just happened to me too, had 5 health left and Onyxia gave me two 8 cost cards which i couldn’t play.

When my HP is below 8, I can’t summon the 8-HP minion created by Onyxia the Giant. Obviously, I should be able to turn things around as my HP increases, but I don’t have enough HP to cast it.

true. so what bug are you here to report?

if a card costs 8 mana and you only have 5 mana, can you cast it?

I understand the bare logic behind it, but I think they should make an exception for Onyxia, it’s too frustrating to barely reach turn 9 only to die anyway because of that, and in my opinion it sort of goes against the spirit of the card… But let’s see what they say or do

You can if it’s your opponent’s health, according to Agamaggan. Since Onyxia would never cause you to die from having too little health, I fail to see the difference between reverse health cost and spending opponent’s health cost.

Onyxia makes health costs increase your max health instead of depleting it
you should be able to play a card that cost health regardless of your current healht total if you’r enot going to pay health anyway

If a card costs minus 8 mana, how much mana do you need to cast it ?

If a card said “refresh 8 mana crystals” instead of costing them, should you be blocked from playing the card if you only have 7 empty mana crystals?

aha, you see. the card expressly does NOT cost -8

The only thing the card in your hand can see is which type of resource it wants (mana/health) and how much it needs of that resource

If you have 5 mana, you can’t cast an 8 cost card.
If you have 8 health, you can’t cast an 8 health cost card (it would kill you)

The card in hand does not know Onyxia is on the field, what she does, or how it will effect the result of casting the card. It only knows resource type and cost.

Now, I wouldn’t be surprised if they updated this specific interaction to be able to ‘kill’ yourself with these specific conditions, similar to Agamaggan being able to ‘spend’ all of your opponent’s HP

But the underlying interaction of not being allowed to cast cards for more HP than you have is NOT A BUG

A card thathas its cost changed by an aura on your board can indeed be casteven though you have less mana than its cost. The card is able to know that something is currently overwritting its previous play condition.
“The card doesn’t know Onyxia is on the field” is a stupid argument. Plenty of cards have their play condition affected by what’s on the field.

Funny how those 2 contradict eachother

They’ve proven in the past that they can clearly make exceptions when it follows the appropriate design of the card. What does not follow the design of the card being that heralding your colossal an extra time to make it stronger can end up making it weaker.

All your arguments can individually be contradicted by existing in-game examples

Also love how you are extremely confident in yourself when you claim that a brand new interaction is working as intended only 48 hours after its release, despite not a single official information having been shared to confirm that it’s intended

Not letting you play the minions that cost health if you don’t have enough health. I’m sure this is a bug, but if this is how its designed then blizzard i want some money back before this expansion goes live. Also would like my ticket refunded because it just garunteed me a loss.

Can confirm this happened to me too.

Hello there,

Thanks for the reports everyone and we appreciate the thoughtful discussion around this!

This is one of those cases where there are valid arguments for it working either way, and reasonable minds may disagree on this being a bug or not.

Technically it is working as implemented and there aren’t any immediate hotfixes planned, but it’s an ongoing discussion in the team and may well be changed in the future.

Thanks again for highlighting!
