Older cards (mainly legacy) disappeared from my collection

Since today’s new expansion patch, many old cards that I have been using in wild decks have disappeared from my decks and collection. A few were replaced by newer versions of the cards that could be swapped in, but most do not and now only appear as uncrafted cards. They definitely have not been disenchanted. So far I have noticed the following are missing:
Defrost
Patchwerk
Kiri, Chosen of Elune
Armegedillo
Aegwynn, the Guardian

I have the exact same problem. Most of my Death Knight cards are completely gone. Many other legacy cards are gone and I spent good money on them to buy them at the time.

Before ww was released, I was playing with Kiri. Chosen of Elune, but now after the update it has been uncrafted? I had both copies, normal and golden… Can anyone exlain that

Those are core cards. The core cards were changed today. Those cards are no longer available in Standard.

Here is a picture of all the cards which left Standard today:

As I understand it, Blizzards process was likely something like the following:

  1. Create updated versions of the rotating cards, with the change being that updated cards list their expansion as ‘legacy’.
  2. Delete the original versions of the cards.
  3. Gift the new versions of the cards to players who had previously owned the original versions (which have now completely disappeared from the game).

As far as I can tell, the above process worked sucesfully for many cards. I have replaced some myself that had disappeared from my decks but could now be found (under legacy) in my collection.

The problem is that step 3 has been omitted for a small minority of cards but to rub salt in the wound, most of the missing cards were of legendary rarity, so this is more significant than it should be.

It has never been planned to gift core cards to players once the cards are removed from the core set.
Either

  • The card was first introduced into core set
    • It got removed from core set
    • A new version of it has been added to legacy set
    • End of story. Want the card ? Craft the legacy one.
      Or
  • The card was first introduced in a previous expansion
    • A new version of it got added to core set
    • It got removed today
    • No new version of it got added anywhere
    • If you want to play the card, you have to craft it in the expansion it was first in. If you already had it, you still have it.

Is there a precedent for Blizzard permanently removing core cards from players’ collections when they retire to legacy, or is this the first time core cards have been retired like this? I certainly wasn’t excpecting so many cards to dissapear from my decks and collection.

I thought the patch notes were clear, but I don’t recall anything saying that our collections were going to be smaller after the patch, and I didn’t think about it for long enough to realise that how the changes could impact my current (mostly wild) decks. If that consequence was deemed too minor a side-effect to be worth mentioninng to the players, then that’s a huge failure to read the room.

It costs Blizzard nothing to gift the legacy versions of the retired core cards so people can continue to enjoy them as they have been for years, to the point where I’d have assumed they would do that anyway as that’s far easier than to deal with lots of players complaining about their missing cards (albeit if their dissapearence was actually ‘by design’).

Every single core set change that occured

They haven’t gotten smaller. Cards got replaced.
In fact it has even increased by 8 cards (see link above posted by Joachim)

It financially do cost them something to just give away free cards every year. Not by actually costing something but by reducing the number of sales.

(I want to precise that I’m just describing, not defending. I would like too to keep the cards)

Yes, that is how Core rotation works every year…

They aren’t.

The Core set CHANGED, but it didn’t SHRINK.

It has just as many cards as it always had – perhaps even a few more.

If your decks contained Core cards, then yeah, those cards are now missing. Again, that’s how Core works. Blizzard loans you a bunch of cards to use for free for a year, and then they take those loans back and loan you a new different bunch.

Then I guess the only thing I have left to say is that it’s never taken me by surprise before. There’s a good chance this is the first year it’s happened in which I’ve been playing wild, which is the first time I used a few of the old core legendaries. I guess it’s not affected my decks till now.

The above notwithstanding, my recommendation stands that this should have been made clearer / more explicit in the build-up, whether by patch notes and / or one of the in-game messages when you launch it, saying “Some of your decks were using old core cards, they are now incomplete because… etc.”.

My card is gone. And i have nothing back. Im retire at this game. Now i know what happened with streamer Amaz when he leaving this game. Blizzard is trash.

Yes, the greed, of the company that gave you a loaner set of cards to use for a full year, with a clearly defined endpoint where the core set would rotate and the new loaner set would change its composition but again be free for you for another year.

Imagine if Enterprise let you use a rental car of theirs for free for a year, but at the end of that year they came and changed the vehicle but you still got another year with that new vehicle. And this will repeat into the future again and again. Are you going to claim that your vehicle (which was never actually owned by you) was stolen from you? That somehow the “greedy” company that is giving you a free vehicle to use all year long for however many years you wish to use it, with the only detail you missed was they would change the vehicle you got to use each year, but you never once have to pay for the free vehicle, are the bad guys in this arrangement. Now if you got attached to a certain vehicle and really dont want to change in one of these cycles, feel free to go out and buy that vehicle (craft those cards). But the free loaners have an end date each year to be cycled. But they are the greedy ones doing all this for your benefit. Sure.

Same problem for me, missing a lot of cards

Lost a bunch of legendaries because of this. Now half of my decks are unplayable

This must be a new definition of “Loan”, since it cost us money to get the cards in the first place, and now if we want to continue using them we have to pay for them again, either by buying more packs of the sets we got the cards from in the first place (Which we bought last time too) or dusting a lot of cards to recraft them.

This is fraud, plain and simple. They’re making you buy something you already paid for a second time, when you had no way of knowing the first time you bought them that they were just going to vanish.

If you already paid for it then they didn’t take away the version you owned. Search for the card and you will find it in its original set. Then you can pull the core card out of your deck and put the wild one in, but your deck will be playable only in Wild.

I got almost all my cards from the store. The cards that dissappeared from my decks aren’t “core” cards, At least I don’t think Patchwerk and Aya Blackpaw were core, I’m pretty sure I got them in packs I bought.

Patchwerk was a core card, Aya was not.
